why is Business Broadband more expensive?

We get asked all the time, what's the benefit of Business Broadband, why is it more expensive?

It's like being asked why a Ferrari is so expensive compared to a Hyundai. There are still advantages for both options, but the difference in price is because of a range of things, from materials used to engineering (research and development) costs.

Business Broadband (depending on the ISP) is an all-round better product for reliability, speed, and latency.

Reliability - better SLA's (service level agreements) such as performance targets and service restoration guarantees;

Speed - better contention ratios, which means less users are sharing your backbone bandwidth than domestic/consumer broadband;

Latency - not to be confused with upload/download speed, latency (or 'ping') is lower because business broadband data gets a higher priority through the internet than consumer data.

Typically ISP's will have a certain amount of bandwidth available on any backbone link, which has an inherent cost. Adding more paying users to that static bandwidth amount means that even though a lot of people are indeed connected to the internet, their data will be stuck in traffic jams with other users data - kind of like when thousands of cars flock to a stadium for some sports event and jam up all the nearby streets, everyone is moving slower.

Business Broadband is more expensive because less users will be connected to the ISP's backbone. Less users are fighting to use that bandwidth, so speed and latency is not affected during peak times. This is more expensive for the ISP - less paying users using each backbone link in comparison to consumer broadband.
