September 2016 - Buffavento Castle, North Cyprus. The lower section of Buffavento Castle was built by the Byzantines in the 11th Century. One of three castles built to defend the island against Arab raids, Buffavento occupies a strategic position, controlling an important pass through the mountains. The castle and its fortifications have been used in combat throughout the centuries, with soldiers occupying the ruins as recently as 1974. At this time, in the culmination of several years of unrest, Turkish forces invaded Cyprus, dividing the island into Northern and Southern territories. September 2016, 18-year-old Ömer Gül photographed in Kyrenia, North Cyprus. On my journey from Larnaca Airport into North Cyprus, my driver, Irkan, explained that since the North Cypriots were given access to the European Union, the culture had changed - young people were more exposed to international influences, and he could see this in their fashion, their choice of music, and their hairstyles.
