Hey, after your great Usami video I thought a bit about Ogata, Usami and Tsurumi and even tho they are all terrible, I feel like Ogata is the worst? Idk I disdain him the most while I have not really a problem with Usami and Tsurumi? It's weird
Haha this is an amusing conclusion.
I think maybe it's because Ogata betrays his audience more? It almost seems like he will get a redemption arc when he joins up with Sugimoto's group initially but instead he turns around and betrays them more and more over the course of the story. It feels more personal.
I don't think readers ever harbor the same hopes for Tsurumi and Usami who are more straightforward bad.
Ogata just makes bad decisions :(

Helloooo
I just saw your Usami video, it was great btw and Usami is so a fun and unhinged character!
But I have a question regarding three other characters; do you have any thoughts about why Koito despite being neglected and losing his brother and Tsukishima literally being abused by his father do not turn out that pathetic, evil and selfish as Ogata?
hi omg thank you O////O I'm really glad to know you liked the Usami video! Also your ask made me laugh jkghfdk
"Pathetic, evil, and selfish as Ogata" has me cracking up.
I hope my answer will not sound too convoluted XD
I see your point though, and I do think Ogata is another kind of special snowflake lolol. The short version of my interpretation on Ogata is that he goes out of his way to prove he is an evil person to cope with his bad decisions.
More longer answer...
I think it's fun to compare him and Usami too, because Usami is the sort of person who refuses to act like a victim be victimized despite the hardships he faced, meanwhile Ogata can't seem to shake the past, and it effects all his decisions in life. The manifestation of Yuusaku's ghost is sort of a symbolic embodiment of that I guess.
With Koito and Tsukishima (two characters I absolutely adore btw) I think they also do some pretty morally bad things as well, though the narrative doesn't put as much emphasis on it. They still follow Tsurumi and act out his ruthless orders, I imagine there is a lot of crimes they committed that happened off camera too, but they all process their sins differently. For a while Tsukishima goes off the rails there when he tries to murder a pregnant Inkarmat, but I think Koito's impact on him saves him from lowering to new levels of evil. If Koito hadn't been there to stop him I think he would have kept making bad "evil" decisions too -- though his motivation would be different from Ogata's, sure.
With Koito I love him because he goes through so much positive change, he's special in the 7th division for different reasons since he's the one who comes closest to breaking out of Tsurumi's hold on him (and tries to take Tsukishima out with him).
At least in part I'd say Koito and Tsukishima had each other and they kept each other grounded in different ways. I'd assume Koito also had some deep values instilled in him at an early age with his his noble family and all that. Plus, Tsurumi is introduced to him at an early age and gives him some hope that sets him on a more productive path.
Ogata was isolated and left alone with his own dark thoughts for too long, and then as an adult faces the manipulations of nefarious others like Tsurumi and Usami that make his delusions worse. Not really an excuse for Ogata or anything because he made his own choices, but he consistently lacked social support (even Tsukishima had Chiyo - which Koito actually strikes me as a similar level of lonely even though he had his family it seems they really ignored him after his brother died). Then by the time Ogata was possibly offered some social support via Yuusaku he was already pretty twisted on the inside, and pushed him away instead of accepting his help.
Yo, I could probably ramble about this infinitely so I'm gonna cut myself off here. Idk if you're aware I have an Ogata analysis too, it covers my thoughts on him pretty thoroughly if you're still interested!
Thanks again for sending me an ask <3
