My all-time hot take is that Keith doesn’t have an emo aesthetic, he has an outdoorsy one.

Like, if you take a look at his canon outfit, it’s less aesthetically anything- emo or otherwise- and more functional. Plus, it just fits with the version of him that lives rent-free in my head.

His nails aren’t painted black, they’re plain and blunt and cut short for practicality. He got really into pop punk in his teen years (mostly to be rebellious and give Shiro a headache) but generally he doesn’t really listen to music, and his favourite are the old country songs his dad used to have records of when he was young. His hands are calloused and scratched up from spending his younger years squaring up to coyotes and climbing the tallest trees just to prove he could do it. He’s got like six different Patagonia jackets that Lance derides as hideous but offer him solid protection from the elements. He goes on frequent hikes (sometimes joined by Lance and Kosmo) because they help clear his head a little and his Galra genes make him go a little stir-crazy if he’s in one place for too long. He carries around a butterfly knife on his person at all times just in case and Lance’s gaze goes a little lustful when he catches sight of all the scars decorating Keith’s fingertips from all the times he’s tried to knife flip. He’s got all this weird survival know-how from all that year spent in the desert and then that subsequent year living on a space whale. He took one look at a dangerous predator and decided to adopt it. He’s fairly good at planting, well, plants, because his father was an outdoorsman and it was one of the first thing he taught him (but let’s be honest, Keith couldn’t keep the plant alive if his life depended on it). He’s the first paladin you call if you’re in need of someone fitting the description of “rugged outdoorsman.” He dresses less for aesthetic and more for functionality, and it drives Lance absolutely batshit that Keith could show up in outright horrendous outfits and still look that good.

Note: This isn’t to shit on anyone’s headcanons, I absolutely adore a good emo Keith take. I just needed to speak my truth.

I feel like we don't talk enough about the fact that Lance was top of his class as a cargo pilot. like everyone is so quick to demean Lance's intelligence because he's surrounded by the dictionary definition of geniuses in their own fields, but his line "fighter pilot, thanks to you washing out" to Keith means he was TOP RANK NUMBER ONE as a cargo pilot.

Lance is consistently infantilized and bullied for being a jack of all trades. his focus is spread, and even so he excels at what he sets his mind to. He, with little to no real gun or hand-to-hand combat training, becomes the team's designated sharpshooter. he also unlocks an altean broadsword , the only paladin to unlock multiple classes of weapons.

But he is the brunt of so many jokes because he's an empathetic, selfless, charismatic guy and a good friend BEFORE he's a genius. And honestly, i do believe whole heartedly that he is a genius, his focus is just so spread that he isn't a prodigy like his team members.

I love you Lance McClain.

an interesting divergence from canon for me would be Lance stepping into Keith’s place after he leaves for the blade- not as in his place in Voltron, but his place on the team. Lance, who has never known abandonment, getting his first taste of it and being driven crazy by the lack of understanding and the anger and the denial; Lance who becomes like Keith in his stead, who snaps like a scared dog and pulls himself away and throws himself into the work and doesn’t let himself laugh. The team notices, sees him slowly veering towards that cliff of not being himself anymore, but aren’t able to do anything to help him before the whole Kuron thing, and when Keith returns, he’s faced with this new, angry Lance, and realizes that he’s looking into a mirror of his younger self, that he’s done to Lance what has been done to him so many times, and now he’s changed and grown older but Lance is still stuck here in this hurt and everything is falling apart around them and Keith has no idea what to do. Welcome to heartbreak city
