ive been thinking about cuphead again so i drew my stupidcreature i worried about whether or not it was period accurate to have a woman in a boilersuit (I dont knowwwww) so i figured id draw jan in a dress before anyone can say anything 2 me about it. here's what i imagine she would wear if she ever got a day off and got to have a little night out which will NEVER EVER HAPPEN EVER was gonna draw more but i got tired. This is all you get. the stuff in the glass is supposed to be rosé but it looks more like pepto bismol. whoops

i think its important to show that yeah in a lot of senses charles is a "victim". his parents were fucking terrible people, he has substance abuse issues, self-image and confidence issues, baggage from his emotionally abusive childhood and past relationships, chronic depression, probably has a few undiagnosed disorders, etc etc. and yeah that sucks and that is definitely the reason he is the way he is, but at a certain point youre an adult, youre responsible for your own actions, and you need to acknowledge that the way you behave hurts the people around you whether its on purpose or not, and that doesn't make you a bad person necessarily but it does mean you need help and you need to change. and its kind of a cliche thing to say but getting to that point alone really is the hardest part for a lot of people

ive kinda been on both ends, when you're deep enough in a suicidal fugue and hate the world enough it's easy to convince yourself that nobody gives a shit if something happens to you / will at least have the capacity to move on even if it is demonstrably not true, and thats kinda the headspace that charles is in. hes genuinely kind of incapable of conceptualizing that it bothers people that care about you when you hurt yourself. it really fucking sucks hardcore to watch someone you care about do that to themselves consistently and in a weird way it can devolve into you hating that person because why cant you just see that i love you and i want you to stop hurting yourself you fucking stupid piece of shit. it is genuinely the kind of thing that ruins relationships and i wish it was easier for people to understand that, that when someone harms themselves whether its through trying to commit suicide or drinking themselves to death they arent the only one that suffers as a result. rambling just I LOVE MISERY

In their weird codependent friendship marty is the emotionally mature one and charles is himself so there's an uncomfortable number of times that he has to drive him home from the bar after he got shitfaced again or talk him down or be like Dude that was kind of uncalled for. he genuinely really cares about charles and just wants him to like, do some soul searching, stop doing shit that makes him miserable for no reason, and not turn into his parents & is also definitely feeling the pressure to be there bc he almost killed himself that one time. It's not a miserable emotionally draining relationship 100% of the time, they still have fun and there's definitely some hope that charles will work his issues out it just sucks and charles is kind of a shitty friend, not on purpose obviously but it rarely is in these kinds of relationships

i havent drawn or talked about marty a whole lot but he's charles' coworker and friend (though they have kind of a weird relationship). he likes disco clubs and sci fi movies. he doesn't like drinking bc his dad was an alcoholic which makes it really unfortunate that drinking is one of the only social things that charles likes to do.

some Character Lore concepts ive had rolling around in my head are obviously his father was a dysfunctional alcoholic, he used to be charles' roommate at some point, and was there for one of charles' suicide attempts. charles has unrequited feelings for him at some point. marty does genuinely like him as a friend but charles inadvertently ruins all of his relationships through his own self-destructive behavior & refusal to examine his issues and not considering how it affects people who care about him

im bored so heres how i think jan would interact w some of the other characters

ginette: i already said i think jan is not liked by any of her coworkers & mdhr hasnt really elaborated much on any of the casino minibosses' personalities but i could see them having a friendly relationship or at least the friendliest possible relationship that they could have which honestly might just entail them meeting up for the sole purpose of complaining about everyone else

king dice: honestly i think they have similar enough personality traits & interests that they could have some chemistry but given that jan just hates everyone and is constantly rude and king dice usually being depicted as a somewhat ego-driven / self-centered character i think in all likelihood they would genuinely hate each other. i think they just say catty passive aggressive shit to each other constantly and talk shit about each other. if they were under threat of death to not be assholes for 5 seconds i think maybe they could be friends but bc theyre just both cunts they have the worst working relationship of all time

cuphead / mugman / chalice: complex. i think on one hand she would hate them for making a mess of the casino literally every single time theyve ever visited & therefore making work for her. on the other i think she would have some interest in them after hearing abt them managing to defeat the devil + in chalice's case, chalice seems to already have the status of a legendary figure who also has magic powers and seemingly resurrected herself at some point after the DLC. i think jan would suck up to anyone she thought could release her from her eternal torment (for purely self-serving reasons obviously)

any of the debtors: it's hard to conceive of a situation where any of them would interact with her outside of the context of being customers but regardless i still think it would be a lot of "Wow you are a genuinely unpleasant person"

henchman: technically not a canon character but its really funny to think about bc i think they embody complete opposite philosophies and viewpoints. i think he would say hello or ask her how her day is going and she would say some rude shit back or tell him to piss off. and he wouldnt even be mad about it just genuinely disappointed

i couldnt think of a name so i decided her name is just canonically janitor now yup janitor thats what we call her we call her the janitor 👍

she's a low ranking demon who, as penance for a slight against the devil, was sentenced to an eternity of torment (janitorial work)

physically cannot leave the casino bc of her curse so she lives & sleeps in the janitor's closet. she sleeps on the floor

permanently smells like bleach & industrial cleaning products

ironically is a bit of a neat freak. has a mental list of everyone who's ever made a mess in the casino

generally miserable and perpetually unhappy. begrudgingly attempts to be civil w/ casino visitors due to not wanting to be disciplined but is consistently an asshole to all of the other staff members. everyone else just tries to ignore her for the most part because she's weird and already lives in a closet anyway

also occasionally acts as a de facto bouncer because they dont have enough employees. often is the one to have to ask customers to abide the rules & get verbally abused by drunken gamblers

despite being arguably one of the lamest weakest brokest demons ever she still believes all mortals are beneath her

favorite pastime is rambling to herself about how she's going to get her revenge on the people of inkwell isle while drinking stale beer alone in her closet

fearfully defers to the devil despite them obviously hating each other and would do basically anything not to have to face him in person

hates being touched

i like to imagine she probably has a nicer side but no one ever sees it because she's consistently mean and unpleasant to everyone she's ever met
