i know that they made mikami the only character with a backstory in order to differentiate him from light but this + the fact that he enters the picture three volumes before the end + the fact that he is blissfully unaware of the identity and motives of 98% of the cast + the fact that he had his own worldview cemented far before kira's appearance creates such a funny result. nobody is doing the "be the protagonist of your own story" thing like teru mikami. we have the legendary manga and anime death note and then we have whatever thing teru mikami thinks he is in

if i were to write a death note remake i would simply find a very convoluted way to make naomi stay in the us while raye is being killed in japan so that she cannot know the details around his death and consequently connect the dots about it and die trying to contact the police. but of course she is Naomi Misora tm and she would keep rotating the situation in her mind in the right way until at some point she would have a very good theory about kira's identity and she would need someone to help her catching him - except that by that point the real L would be dead and something about the new one and japanese police would feel very off and the fbi would call her crazy and what i am trying to say is that she should end up working with mello and matt and being a loser with them. mello would secretly be a big fan of her. she wouldn't like mello initially but she would tolerate him because he is a successor of L and she would respect that. the ghost of bb would loom above them everyday. maybe naomi knows halle. light would have TWO crazy motorcyclists to watch out for. etc

yay, meronia event! for my first prompt of 'special day', the american national milk chocolate day being on the same day as the start of the event seemed like a perfect fit. have this near being antagonistic for no reason.

meronia event day two: rematch/play. I think mello and near would play chess together when they were younger (the only time they would interact) so this is a rematch. Where they play chess. Or something.

Based on that one eating chess pieces thing except that near wouldn't eat chess pieces. I think.

Originally this would've had more panels and some actual dialogue so you could actually know what's going on but i couldn't make that work with my lackluster skill time and patience so have this. Basically mello dies like in canon and then wakes up to near telling him it's time for breakfast mello you don't want to miss breakfast do you

What if, when Mello died and went to heaven, God said “you need to make amends with your rival before you can proceed,” and sent his spirit back to Earth?

However, he needs a vessel. Conveniently, Near is in possession of a body perfectly suited to the task, with manipulable electricity and capacity for speech, in the form of a beautiful tentacled custom furby.

Mello is horrified. Near is delighted.

It takes a while for Mello to make peace with his new form - by all accounts, sparks fly (more literally than metaphorically, at least at the beginning) But eventually, he learns to exist within it.

Near prepares for him a new outfit, suited to his aesthetic preferences, and gets assistance on cases (more competitive on Mello’s end, pointing out flaws in Near’s work, but Near appreciates it all the same)

Their relationship grows. Evolves. Blossoms into something strange and beautiful. All who witness it are scarred for life. But they don’t care. What they have is special. Wonderful and unnerving and special. This is heaven now.
