I know I say that I'm kinda nuts for doing the amount of visual research I do, but at the same time: Specificity is SO much more compelling and real feeling, and imo not getting references often makes things look more amateur.
Eg. drawing a sofa- my mental image of a sofa is something like this:
Like. Its a sofa. It works. But it's not very convincing, the pillows are kinda wrong at the back, and it's not really giving any information about the owner. Even if you want a basic sofa... What kind of basic.
comfy and cheap?
kinda rigid?
inherited? ------
who does this comfy cheap ikea sofa belong to anyway?
guy living alone?
teenage girl?
Grandma?
Anyway I'll get off my soapbox but specificity is sexy and fun and it can do your storytelling for you!

AHHHH I didn't want to get late for the party, couldn't finish the background, but we are going to ignore that for my mental sanity :))) This is my take on @akanemnon 's drawing <3

uhm im new , i found ur coloring quit abit like a light theme for the flower feild vibes! and im also wondering how u do ur anatomy's ? im just wodnering tho u dont have to answer them if u dont want to^^
Oh cool :0!! Unfortunately I'm no teacher so,, I'm pretty bad at teaching and explaining what I do since I kinda just fart around until something happens LOLOL But I can explain some stuff I think!
When I start coloring I usually have a solid base color, sometimes I add gradients but that's when I feel like crunching more effort (Lol) and usually I base my entire color palette around this! I do follow base colors most of the time- Like the actual color palette of a character, but I end up blending those colors with my base (in that photo it's the yellow) so everything looks cohesive :)) I use a low opacity brush for that, so it blends in with the color underneath, in a different visualization it'd probably look like this:
Thoughhh I usually don't rely on base colors for characters in general? I've learned to tweak it and mismatch them to fit the color palette/vibe I'm going for, not being tied down to using them is better for me imo ! I'm also just really messy on coloring tbh- Especially if it's things like backgrounds that don't have strict linework? I Favor silhouettes and textured brushes than being it being immensely detailed!
As for anatomy- That I can't say much, I think most of my knowledge for it comes from just drawing nonstop and being put out of my comfort zone by drawing for other people when I do commissions I actually,, don't do studies often! Which you should if you want to learn obvs!! Just not for me <//3 There's lots of people out there who are better equipped to explain how bodies work tbf HAHA I am no teacher!! But thanks for the question :DD I'm happy to answer always!
