Impossible to pick just one, but if I had to I think I'd have to go with broken ribs (or broken bones more broadly). I love a good stabbing as much as the next writer, but you can really draw it out or drive the urgency with broken ribs.
And near-human whumpees!
reblog with your favourite whump trope!! - let’s see who’s active in the whump community 2025
i’ll start - hidden injury !!!

characters raised to be tools
Weapons. Trained, tested, forged in steel and fire. Failure is an inevitability that ends in death. Pain should not be felt--it should be recognized, familiar, and inconsequential
Martyrs. In the form of servants and princes, of leaders and underdogs. If blood is necessary, the martyr will lift their hands and offer it all
Shields. Like tempering a sword, but only to bear and not to lash out. Wounds are medals--not symbols of pride, but symbols of worth. A pretty shield is useless; scars mean a job well done
Experiments. Raised on the cold comfort of a lab table. Restraints are only necessary when they're not in their right mind. Is it honorable, to be twisted beyond recognition? Or is it just a necessary evil?
Monsters. Cruelty, caution, and regarding one as a creature beyond reasonable thought is tempering in its own right. But if you keep a leash at the right length, perhaps the massecre won't reach you. One can hope.
Idols. Pretty face, pretty name, pretty hands around their shoulders and throat. There to seduce, manipulate, force any feeling to come to the surface and twist it to their favor. Any genuinity stays locked behind the guilded cage that surrounds their pretty little heart
Trophies. Status and wealth and the traditions that keep someone at their heels, on their knees, to display and serve and decorate one's ballroom.
Sacrifices. Drenched in honorable clothes, prepared and adored and cleansed. The gift of hope at the cost of one's life. Is it taken with no fight? How can you escape the ropes you were born in?

a guy strapped down to a table, wrists up by his head on either side. trying to turn and snarl at whoever is rummaging around at the tools behind him. that gets him a leather strap across his forehead.
then he tries biting the hand. that gets him a strap between his teeth ❤️

Im getting something *puts my antenna up* inspiration has struck!
This makes me think fondly of instances when a character has masked up vigilante style or just in general to go investigate a sketchy place or person. It feels like one of those towns where everyone is happy. Everyone. Is. Happy. And we just dont talk about that building where Ted, formerly the most curious person in town, got dragged off to last week.
Whumpee masks up to go check it out, maybe without telling anyone, maybe against a friend's wishes, maybe directly despite a warning. They break in, they learn the secret, find what remains of Ted in a jar or something simply labeled with his name. Whumpee absolutely drops and shatters that jar as it dawns on them and then the alarm gets set off. They have to shelve that horrifying realization (maybe they're being farmed, or spied on, or slowly infected by something, who knows) and RUN.
As they are fleeing for their lives, they try tonfocus through the brutal panic. Get caught and become a part of this. Get caught and be the next one into those jars. Its close, but they escape the building, not unscathed.
Arriving home they have to tend to the wound on their own because they cant TELL anyone! Not yet, not until they're sure how far up this goes. But that leaves them gasping and crying on the couch as they try to stay awake while stitching the whole thing closed. As their vision grays they disinfect it and manage to get a bandage on top. What they wouldn't give for some help.
Enter trying to hide a serious, potentially infection worthy injury for the next week. They can cover for a day or two claiming to be sick, and that's not too far off the mark. If whumpee saw themselves they'd believe it. But after a day or two of lying low they don't want to worry their friends and risk them turning up trying to help.
So whumpee gingerly pulls a shirt on and tries to make an appearance. They're suppressing winces and groans the whole time and are desperately looking for an out, all the while they pray no one notices.
Inevitably however, perhaps a friend who works on the guard team elbows them there, accidentally dislodgeing the fresh scab. As whumpee doubles over they're worried then struck by a realization, "It was you!"

there’s a thing I think about sometimes when I’m writing that I call ‘the rabies condition’
by which I mean: there are no contraindications to getting the rabies vaccine for post-exposure prophylaxis.
every other vaccine usually has a few contraindications like ‘don’t take this if you’re allergic to it’ or ‘if you’re pregnant discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor’ or ‘don’t give to children below age 6′ or something, but not the rabies vaccine. if you’ve been exposed to rabies, there is literally no medical reason that can justify not getting the rabies vaccine–you can be deadly allergic to literally every single ingredient and the correct decision is still to administer the vaccine, because if you don’t, you’re 100% guaranteed to die of rabies. even the life-threatening allergies are a step up in survival rate (especially since anaphylaxis is something that can be managed, even if there are risks associated with it)
which is to say, the rabies condition: if a character has been ‘exposed to rabies’, aka, in some impending absolute worst-case scenario, like the apocalypse or some death curse or the destruction of their entire city via demons or whatever, then that character has to take action and the consequences and risks no longer matter, because literally any other outcome would be better, and 1% chance of survival is still better than 0%. that doesn’t make those actions necessarily good, the same way that injecting yourself with something you know you’re deadly allergic not a good thing to do, but it’s still better than dying horrifically of rabies. desperate times and desperate measures etc
and then, after your character’s prevented some horrible thing by doing some almost equally bad thing, they should absolutely experience the consequences of those choices.

Give me whumpees who are angry, dysregulated, and horrible during recovery.
I love a quiet and anxious whumpee as much as the next person, but whumpees that are explosive and upset hit so much harder for me. It's really difficult to be a nice person when you're dealing with so much mental and/or physical trauma.* Pain makes you a bitch. It's frustrating. It hurts. At some point, whumpee is going to snap.
Shoving people away. Yelling. Violent outbursts, throwing things, reckless behaviour. Caretaker doesn't know what to do or how to leave. Whumpee doesn't know how to stop or make it any better.
They're fighting, again, and whumpee is yelling and shouting because they're trying to make themselves understood, but they can't find the words to articulate it so they have to show the feeling instead. Caretaker is tired of being on the receiving end of it so they're shouting back, which just makes both of them more upset.
And then whumpee finally manages to put the thing into words, stunning them both into silence, before whumpee starts apologising profusely. The whole time they'd just wanted to be understood but couldn't explain themselves and being vulnerable is terrifying and "I never wanted to hurt you too."
Idk just give me dysregulated whumpees.
*this is not saying you cannot be a nice person with trauma, or that trauma makes you a bad person. this is saying that when you're so overwhelmed and constantly in fight or flight, it can be very difficult to be rational or considerate. it happens. that's ok.

characters apologizing for things they have no control over. mumbling sorry while losing consciousness. feeling ashamed of a bleeding wound. embarrassed when an infection sets in. deep seated feverish guilt when they need to be carried, when their legs won't keep them upright anymore and they lean heavy on a friend, slurring apologies..........

But also
Tumblr media
Some writers like to keep you guessing
It's so funny to me that the term "whump" can easily mean anything from "this character has a cold 😦 but here's another character taking care of him 🙂" all the way over to "this character is being viciously tortured to death" and sometimes those two creators are following each other.

Ya got any more non-con cyborg content? 👀
Oh, you know I do (I heard this markiplier clip in my head as soon as I typed that. I will not be disclosing how long it took me to find it explicitly for this purpose)
Tw: dehumanization, cyborgs beating the shit out of eachother, minor not quite blood mention
Sooooo to start things off on a fresh new post I want to throw something fun into the mix that I keep seeing at the fringes of my feed and absolutely loving (though have somehow not touched upon in my own nonsense yet)! Prey animal rage!
I personally am a huge fan of the isolation that comes with whumpee going from human to not. The way their society could be devaluing them, using objectifying languge, possibly not acknowledging that they're speaking or even there, ignoring the unbridled violence against whumpee by their creator or others. Whumpee just has no rights anymore.
As much as I love whumpee's internalizing this i have even more of a soft spot for whumpee's who do sort of the opposite. They're not going to accept this. No one is going to help them? Fine! They'll fight tooth and nail, bolt and fiber optic, for their life, because it matters to them!
And thinking about that just gets me thinking about whumpee interacting with a new breed of whumper and caretaker.
I would love to see whumper scientist, creator, bring in "old reliable" when whumpee continues to fight back. Sure they could just pull out more and more of whumpee's brain, that's been going pretty well so far, no matter how much whumpee screams and curses at them, scientist whumper can see the changes starting to get to whumpee. Slower to bite back, slower to resist, slower to care. Scientist whumper just wants to hurry that along a little.
Whumper brings in a slightly more dated cyborg, but one that knows themselves better (remember when I ranted in my last cyborg post about whumpee getting a more experienced cyborg caretaker? Think the antithesis to them). This is a trained living weapon, someone who has gone through the process and come out the otherside completely embracing their supposed place and their inhumanity.
I can just vividly imagine the two of them throwing down, and until cyborg whumper actually lands a hit, whumpee is feeling pretty good about themselves, they're faster, stronger than they used to be, they have a chance. Until that aforementioned first hit. Its like getting hit by a sledge hammer, and whumpee is certain the only reason it didn't kill them or put them out completely it because cyborg whumper hit the mechanical side of their face.
It all goes downhill from there and whumpee is sparking, coughing up biofluid, and hearing chunks off them hit the ground right and left. They are getting more and more desperate as it seems to them that cyborg whumper is not going to leave them alive.
I'm in it for that desperation and feral terror when cyborg whumper gets a hand on whumpee's throat and pins them with an iron grip. Their other appendage turns into a weapon or is holding one. The frenzied thrashing as whumpee tries to get free because despite the hell their life is now they do not want to die.
They are a rabbit in the jaw of a wolf and they can feel the teeth crushing down.
"You think I'm going to kill you? No, I'd get in way too much trouble for that."
Then whumpee is given an object lesson in how hard it actually is to kill a cyborg. They thought they were in bad shape before? They just wish they'd pass out. How many pieces can they live without?
Eventually scientist whumper intervenes, and cyborg whumper gives one last distainful look at whumpee before calling them a disappointment and leaving. They head to the door leaving whumpee struggling to function on the floor as the scientific team closes in to stabilize them. But here's the thing whumpee notices as they leave: the door wasn't closed all the way.
It's their only chance.
It's their only option.
It's their only hope.
Whumpee rallies everything they have left and surge towards the door fighting off the techs who try to stop them, then the human guards. Whumpee is so weak it almost works but that prey animal rage kicks in. If they dont make it... they can't last much longer here. The desperation takes hold and they fight.
We skip ahead maybe a fifteen minutes of uncoordinated running and fighting later and whumpee is stumbling through the streets (I like to imagine in the rain). They have no where to go, they hadn't thought about that. Their wounds feel fatal, they feel like they're dying with every step, and they're terrified that any second they're going to be found by cyborg whumper or the rest of the team, and they're so cold. They begin to collapse against an alley wall amidst the trash and dumpsters, trying to cry. They know they can't. Not since whumper replaced their eyes. So theres just pressure and pain in their head and their chest that makes them feel like they're going to explode. They sit with that pain until inevitably they pass out.
Now usually that's possibly the worst thing for any mechanized being to do in the street because the scavengers will be all over them in minutes. But being the merciful God I am, I will toss whumpee a bone. Enter caretaker.
Caretaker is a mechanic. Caretaker likes their machines more than people because people are difficult and hung up on their mortality and morals based around that mortality and their stupid feelings all the time. Machines are practical, they make sense, theyre beautiful and adaptable and amazing, some of their best friends are robots. So when they happen across whumpee... well... are they human or machine?
They cant be human anymore, they're clearly more metal than flesh now. It would be a shame to let such incredibly complex mechanical components degrade or get scavenged... so caretaker takes them home.
Whumpee wakes up in the noticeably less than pristine autoshop/lab/workshop looking amalgamation with caretaker elbow deep in their circuits. They understandably panic but caretaker has quick reflexes thanks to an unfortunate childhood and a lifetime of bad decisions. So the struggle ends with whumpee curled against the wall opposite them with a weapon drawn and caretaker only has one scratch to show for it.
This is where our remarkably irresponsible caretaker has to decide just how far they're willing to go for this desperate and terrified cyborg. They decide almost instantly, pretty damn far.

love it when a recovering whumpee has a very bad coping mechanism that they fully collapse on. Is it self destructive? Sure. Is anyone going to say a word? no they just went through hell. Could be picking fights, could be drinking, a nicotine addiction— any kind of escapism really that at any other time their friends wouldn’t approve of. But now? It’s a lot better then watching their friend stare blankly at a wall right

So I'm seeing a lot of fanarts involving Kai having insect traits.
A little, barely formed antennae, pincers on his mouth or some other insect-related thing somewhere on his body.
Basically, during his stay in this freakish, bug infested realm, he starts developing those insect traits. He starts to literally become one. We all know that - that's what the fanarts are depicting after all, but...
Might I suggest something kinda... disturbing?
He wakes up one day and feels something on his mouth, or well, more specifically near the corner of his lip. He reaches his hand to feel and is horrified to feel something thin and quite frankly long protruding from his face
He retracts his hand in momentary fear. He's barely thinking as he reaches for the blade he has to see his reflection.
He positions the blade and is once again horrified to see a pincer that had most likely grown whilst he was asleep in the reflection.
So Kai is absolutely terrified, realising that the longer he stays here, then more of these mutations will grow.
The realm is not only forcing him to battle these bugs and fight for another day. It's changing him both mentally and now physically.
Kai panics. He has to endure so much. He's slowly losing his sanity, and now his body!? He couldn't let this happen. He can't allow himself to succumb to the realms workings. He has to somehow stop this or at least postpone the transformation.
An idea strucks him, though he immediately shudders. It's not going to be pretty. He's going to have to build up some confidence and psych himself up.
He places the blade down. He has to get everything out. He reaches for the pincer with one hand, takes a deep breath, and pulls the pincer as hard as he could, ripping it out.

I freaking love it when both caretaker and whumpee can't sleep at night so coincidentially they're both out of their room and they see the other and then we get [insert cute/soft bonding moment] between them in the middle of the night it's such a fluffy trope in my head

Well if you insist 😏 (fr I could go on and on about cyborg characters, they're so fun!)
One of my favorite angles of attack on nonhuman characters, especially newly nonhuman characters is the mentor route. That is to say what if our cyborg whumpee and possibly their human caretaker friend run into trouble one day? Whumper has the two of them cornered, and they're about to close in when boom! Caretaker 2 (to be of course) explodes onto the scene! Here's the thing about caretaker 2 though, they're also a cyborg, maybe an older one, maybe one by choice, maybe not. Regardless what they are is experienced!
Caretaker 2 wipes the floor with whumper's crew and sends them running (to the lab of course to build a new weapon). Then turns back to whumpee and caretaker 1 and saying, "well damn you two look pretty rough." With that snarky-ass grin.
I'm a sucker for caretaker 2 taking on a mentor role for whumpee. Whether they show whumpee there's a good side to this new way of living or a bad side (or both) is entirely up to the writer. What's also pretty fun is this allows for a rift to potentially try to form between caretaker 1 and whumpee, because caretaker 1 is human. Humans can't understand what whumpee is going through.
From here you could have caretaker 2 lean into this because they dont trust humans. Or, maybe caretaker 2 is wiser than that. Maybe they know what good friends look like. Caretaker 1 and 2 may not always agree, but 2 doesn't hold it against 1. Caretaker 1 and whumpee are both young. There is a lot they both still have to learn. Enter found family!
Now to focus on whumpee a bit more. I absolutely love when a character accidentally kills someone (let the record show yes I am a huge fan of invincible). I like to sit back and imagine the fallout if whumpee accidentally went too far when defending caretaker, ir got frustrated with someone who was insulting them, or if whumpee got scared by someone in a dark and foreboding alleyway. I would love to see whumpee curled against caretaker crying with blood on their hands as they try to figure out what just happened. They can't possibly know whumper installed an instant kill sub routine in their not all human brain. Can't know it's not longer really a choice when someone attacks them. (Maybe caretaker 2 could recognize it....)
Then what happens if whumpee accidentally hurts caretaker 1? What do they think of themselves as caretaker 1 holds a hand over the gushing wound as they try to assure whumpee that it's fine! It really is fine! It's just a scratch! Don't look at it just breathe, buddy!
Will whumpee run? Scream? Break down altogether?
How about if caretaker 2 steps in, scoops up 1 in their arms and drags whumpee behind them. They rush to the hospital as caretaker 1 fights to stay awake. Caretaker 2 leaves whumpee in the waiting room as they follow the stretcher 1 is taken away on. Whumpee can't think over all the noise. They can't breathe, they dont breathe. What is wrong with them? They're such a monster!
The world moves around them, all bright colors and things they can't hear. They stay in that spot for what feels like a long time. Then theres a hand on their arm and a familiar voice in their audio receptor. "This is why you are not a person whumpee. You are a weapon. You can only hurt people. There is no other purpose for you. I'm sorry you had to find out this way." Whumper whispers to them.
Whumpee can't find a reason to resist as whumper draws them out of the waiting room and out of the hospital. Deep down they know whumper is right. They know what they're capable of now. They're not human.
Caretaker 2 finally manages to get back to the waiting room. They know they're going to have a long talk ahead of them. They remember the first time they hurt someone. They know the spiral. But when they dont find whumpee where they left them or in any of the surrounding rooms only to get a description of an all too familiar scientist from the front desk they feel the numb horror of it all come crashing down.
Whumper has taken whumpee.
what do you mean by "noncon cyborgs"? 👀 iii wanna knowwwww
Oh my gosh! Thank you for asking!!! Now I get to rant about it 😈
Noncon cyborgs is the nonconsentual modification of a whumpee (whumper or oooooooh! Caretaker!!!) with mechanical augmentations. But thats just a technical description, it's all about what it can be:
- whumpee waking up after being in a fire, a collapsing building, a general disaster, and they're certain they should have died. But they wake up and they are strapped to a steel table in a room that is a few degrees too cold.
- they cannot recognize their own voice
- they cannot feel the cold air on a specific limb
- they aren't breathing. Not that they can't. They aren't. And they're not dying from it?
- the utter silence of it all makes them realize their heart isn't beating either.
- whumper enters and begins to coo, their new creation, their pet, their wonderful new tool, is perfect.
- "What happened to me? How did I survive the ---? Who are you?!"
- whumper shows them a mirror or maybe they see a reflection of themselves in whumper's lab goggles (safety first).
- "WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME!? WHAT AM I!?"
- whumper smiles, "Sweetheart, you didn't survive the ---." Then they reach down, and they press something under whumpee's jaw.
- Whumpee opens their mouth to start yelling again, to start swearing, anything! Because it's all the control they have left. Their only outlet in this moment of brain shattering terror. But nothing happens. Not a sound come out of their trembling lips.
- whumper just laughs. "I do so love the mute feature."
Obviously there's more:
- whumpee being under some form of control depending on how much of them is mechanical
- now they are more machine than person, they aren't a person. The laws regarding the rights of sentient beings don't protect them anymore. No one is going to help them.
- whumper pulling back one of their panels and invading with cold fingers and carelessness into whumpees innards. Wires occasionally spark sending jabs of pain through whumpee that they cannot stop.
- being partially shutdown and completely immobilized.
- say whumpee does escape or maybe has a second to themself to finally process this. They cannot cry. Their eyes are photo sensors and lenses there are no tear ducts. Everything is just compressing in their chest as they try to survive this overwhelming heart crushing wave of fear and helplessness. (Factor in perhaps they still can't talk).

Oh I see the vision here! If I may, it has sparked some ideas:
- Whumpee needs medication to keep the augments from rejecting. They can't administer it themselves (maybe they need to be partly powered down or something of the like) it was meant to keep them reliant on whumper. Instead they hesitantly approach caretaker, "I... I need your help." (I'm particularly a sucker for this approach if Whumpee has been unwilling to accept help or anything close up to this point.)
- say Whumpee had to run through some rough terrain at some point recently. They have grit in some very sensitive gears. It grinds and lights their remaining augmented nerves on fire every time they move. It's seek help or suffer. They try to suffer in silence but after it nearly gets them both caught they come to caretaker for help, feeling they somewhat owe them this much.
- or maybe... something a touch more wholesome. Maybe it's maintenance, something they're used to whumper doing without asking and without caring. But when whumpee asks caretaker for help it becomes something much softer. Caretaker is so gentle and so careful. It's comforting to have someone who cares so much checking and testing everything because they want to make sure whumpee is healthy and safe. It makes them feel loved in a way they're not used to.
