18 TYPES - Symbolism and Significance
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
FIRE | I express | active, forceful, emotional, driven WATER | I encompass | holistic, fluid, dynamic, diverse GRASS | I generate | nurturing, self-sufficient, creative, encouraging ELECTRIC | I interact | volatile, reactive, connected, instigatory ROCK | I preserve | traditional, enduring, anticipatory, realistic ICE | I divide | clear, rational, conforming, fragmented
-
FIRE The active, emotional, and highly destructive. An extremely volatile type, Fire is rarely a self-bolstering type, and almost exclusively describes a mode of action. It describes people and entities which have drastic effects on their surroundings, and can imply a lack of self-awareness or self-control when not paired with another type or otherwise offset. It is important to remember that Fire also strongly symbolizes a subservience to one's emotions; several types can be associated with violence and destruction, but Fire involves a strong sense of purpose, even if the Fire-typed person or entity is not cognizant of what that purpose may be or cannot rationalize their objective. At its most positive, the Fire type embodies the ability to take needed action and achieve desired effects on one’s situation and surroundings.
-
WATER The keyword for the Water-type is "holistic" - it's a type that represents change within a larger equilibrium, and the concept that the microsystem and the macrosystem are one and the same. Water is often characterized as being calm, though in reality it consists of constant, balanced motion - the perception of calmness or stillness is only external, the result of inner components being in harmony. It may also stand for the concept that the identity of the whole defies identification of its parts, and acceptance of a lack of absolutes in any aspect of life.
-
GRASS Normal embodies the potential to grow, but Grass is the process of growth itself - the principle that is concerned with creation, nurturing, and development. Equipped with healing and defensive techniques, the Grass-type is the first spark of life and conscious will from Ground's fundamental reality, symbol of primary industries and the most essential functions of nature. It is raw practicality, common sense, and knowledge of the natural sciences; it is entities that support ecosystems around themselves. The essence of Grass is self-sufficiency, and it embodies all creative efforts.
-
ELECTRIC Volatility, but not in the manner of Fire; a volatility lacking passion, lacking a guiding stimulus, born entirely of the injection of chaos into the point where many factors meet, and for that reason perhaps even more dangerous than Fire's wild behavior. Electric implies connections and chains of influence, especially when those connections amplify power or call upon greater consequences, like the synergy of a Plusle and a Minun, the effect of Charge, or the arc of Thunder down from the heavens. Meticulousness is a key feature of this type, as is curiosity and a problem-solving approach that does not rely on past wisdom.
-
ROCK Rock, rather appropriately, represents that which is ancient, as well as that which preserves the ancient and that which intends to endure into the future. The Rock-type is one that sees the world in the long term, working towards distant goals rather than short-term gratification. It represents lasting realities and constraints of time and capability, and can lack flexibility and agility, but is also a type given to great powers of endurance. Rock can also represent drawn-out chains or cycles of cause and effect or influence, and entities which understand, employ, or participate in these cycles.
-
ICE The Ice-type is popularly associated with standoffish and unfeeling personalities - and that is one part of its nature. Like the crystalline structures that form its natural expression, Ice is comprised of several aspects that interlock but do not fully twine together, one of which is that very kind of fragmentation; the property of things being kept separate. Another is distance from emotions, a type of fragmentation on its own. Yet another is the concept of fitting well into a place, activity, or occupation, like the Ice-type Pokemon which are finely adapted to harsh environments...or like the frozen water molecules that lock together to form solid ice. There are many other meanings, too, all cascading from the symbolism of the ice crystal (not unlike the fractal forms of snowflakes - precise recursion, too, is an Ice attribute.)

WBW Megapost
*shrugs* here’s some garbage
How militarized is your clan? Was it always like this or did something happen to make it that way?
What kind of combat does your clan specialize in? Physical? Magical? Bit of both? Or are they more fond of subterfuge?
What kinds of weapons do your dragons use? If your dragons use actual physical weapons how do they hold them (assuming they don’t use claws/teeth)? If they use magic do they have some sort of focus like a staff?
What or who would be most likely to attack your clan at this point in time? Is your clan aware of this potential threat?
Does your clan have a strategist? What about a general or just someone who leads the charge?
Who is your strongest dragon? Who is your most skilled?
Has your clan ever lost a major battle/war? Did they suffer many casualties? If they’ve never lost/fought a battle, how many casualties do you think they’d have?
How prepared is your clan for a surprise attack?
Where would your dragons that are unfit for combat go in the event of a battle? Is there an escape plan in case the fighting follows them home?
Have any of your dragons suffered a grave, but non-lethal injury due to a battle? How does it affect them (physically or emotionally)?
Does your clan have some sort of battle hymn or battle cry?
Do your healers accompany your warriors to battle or do they stay at the lair?
How “fairly” does your clan fight? Are they honorable even when things look grim? Are they willing to get their hands a little dirty?
Does your clan favor war or diplomacy?
How formidable would you say your clan is? How formidable would others say it is?
What kind of benefits does allying with your clan have?
What sort of things does your clan look for in potential allies? In this case I mean general attitude and moral code.
What sort of services or exports does your clan need that allies can/do provide? Why are they unable to do it/secure these items by themselves?
How famous would you say your clan is in the local area? In their flight? In all of Sornieth
How well known does your clan want to be? Will they ever reach that?
Is there some sort of service/items that only your clan can provide? How valuable is it? Does it cause a lot of problems (from invaders, thieves, raving bands of longnecks, etc.)?
How clean is your clan’s image? Are they really that way?
If they do have a clean image but do shady, underhanded business, how is it kept under wraps? Have there ever been times your clan has almost been figured out?
If they don’t have a clean image but are actually decent, why are they regarded as such? Do they actively cultivate the image to protect themselves?
How are alliances formed with other clans?
Do other clans have to do something in particular to gain your favor in order to ally with them?
How “chummy” is your clan with its allies? Do they like to keep them at arm’s length or are they considered “part of the family”, so to speak?
How vital are your alliances? Why is or isn’t this the case?
How active is your clan’s search for allies?
How does you clan deal with allies with a wildly different approach or opinion on an important topic (for example, Beastclan relations)? Do they instantly cut ties? Send letters of disapproval? Ignore it?
A member of your clan has ran afoul of a friendly clan. How would you prefer they be dealt with; by your laws or their’s? How would you deal with the reverse situation?
How often does your clan meet up with your (potential) allies? Does your clan only send diplomats? Does your clan’s leader show up in person? Are meetings entire clan affairs where everyone shows up?
What is your clan’s main goal? Does it have one? If so, how did it come about?
How does your clan view outsiders? Other clans? Is there a protocol when dealing with each?
How in-tune with their native element are your dragons? Does it vary? If you have any dragons that aren’t, why is that?
How are disputes within the clan dealt with? Do the dragons hash it out between them? Is there a council or central authority figure that deals with it?
How are disputes with other clans dealt with?
What is your clan known for? If it’s not known for anything in particular, what does it want to be known for?
How is rank determined in your clan? Is there a ranking system?
How are the leaders chosen? Do they fight for the position? Are they divinely chosen? Are they elected?
Which of your dragons would be most likely to turn against your clan? What would make them do such a thing (this isn’t to say that it would, it’s just a hypothetical)?
If your clan leader went off the deep end, who would stand by them no matter what?
How has your clan changed since it started? This can mean when you first joined or in-lore, either way.
What would most of your dragons say the biggest threat to them is right now?
How competent would your clan say your leader(s) is/are? How competent are they really?
When dragons wish to become mates, how does that happen? Is there a ceremony? Do they just mutually agree to it? Is their mate already chosen for them?
Do the members of your clan more or less get along with each other? What would cause them to quarrel if so? Why do they if not?
In the event of a tragedy, who would be the first to react?
Who’s the “clan mom”?
Is there a dragon that the rest of the clan can’t stand (either because they’re a jerk or because they’re insufferable)?
Who’s the precious cinnamon roll of the lair?
Who’s the dragon the rest of their lairmates can depend on the most? Why is that?
What dragons make up your most disgustingly cute relationship? What makes them so cute?
Which dragon would die first in the event of an apocalypse? Would they die bravely? Stupidly?
Who contributes the most to your clan’s treasure hoard?
Which dragon is most empathetic to the Beast Clans? Least empathetic?
Which dragon is the most physically fit? Which is the least?
Do any of your dragons exhibit the usual traits/talents of their breed? How does it affect them? Does it make their job/life more difficult?
Who’s the most spoiled dragon of the lair, both in lore and by you?
Is there a dragon that’s misunderstood or was misunderstood by most of your clan?
Who’s the clan’s most eligible bachelor/bachelorette?
Who’s the clan troublemaker(s) and who has to clean up the mess?
Are there any rivals in your clan? Are they friendly rivals or bitter enemies?
Which of your dragons is most likely to tell dad jokes?
Who’s the grump of the clan?
Which dragon is most likely to stare at the camera like they’re in The Office?
Which dragon is secretly very sweet once you get to know them?
Which dragon is secretly a huge douche once you get to know them?
Who misses their old flight/home the most?
Which dragon knows every secret in the clan? Would they share them for the right price?
Who’s the weirdest dragon in your clan? Why are they weird?
Is there a pair or group of dragons that make their lairmates go “oh shit” when they’re seen together?
How are the Beast Clans seen in your clan? A nuisance? Trade partners? Servants?
How are familiars treated? Are they pets? Companions? Not really important?
How concerned is your clan about the Shade?
Is breeding done only between mates? Freely? For the good of the clan?
How does your clan react towards others? Are they war-like? Peaceful? Isolationists?
What does your clan think about the other flights? Is worship of other deities permitted?
How religious is the bulk of your clan?
If your clan is religious, how is worship done? Privately? Is there a large ceremony?
How is leadership divvied up? Does the leader have a council of some sort? Is leadership shared? Is there even a leader in your clan?
How does your clan view exaltation?
How do dragons join your clan?
Are there separate factions within your clan? Is your lair a combination of different clans?
What are accents in your lore? Tattoos or paint? Natural markings (depending on the accent, obviously)?
How does your lore explain the AH? Does your clan actually sell dragons to other clans? Do they go on their own accord?
Do all of your dragons have to contribute to the clan to stay? Are there layabouts?
How are disputes settled between lairmates? With other clans?
Are hatchlings raised communally or by their parents?
How are eggs created? Magic? The old fashion way wink wink nudge nudge?
Does your lair know about emperors? Are they aware of how they’re made?
How strict do your dragons stick to the breed stereotypes? Flight stereotypes?

Whoo, super long nose tutorial! I’m sure there’s heaps I didn’t mention in this but this is generally how I approach it - the main thing is to check out references and try and draw different noses, it’ll help you create more diverse characters and have fun with it without being afraid of drawing the nose (since it’s genuinely one of my favourite things to draw).

The most important thing is to trust your eyes, and use colours that you think look good!
If you’re struggling to choose colours that look good to you, look at how your favourite artists use colour.
What colour schemes are they using? How are they using saturation and value?
Dissect their art based on the information above, and you will hopefully understand colour better!

I found this very useful. Sometimes it’s great to have a visual aid of the layout of the settlements, towns or cities where your stories develop. It’s good to have an idea of the distance between places and their position within the town; this way, it might be easier to describe the routes your characters travel, noting buildings that might be relevant to the story later or relating other characters to certain areas of a city.

My first shot at creating a sort of tutorial/guide, telling how I do things. On this initial chapter we’re going over the handy matter of Hands. Not meaning to be an encyclopedic explanation, only showing my own methods and self-taught clues. Hoping somebody finds it useful! :3 I’ll do more if this one is received well. So let me know~
My thanks also to the supporters in my Patreon campaign, who helped me decide which themes to focus on for a start. And are actually allowing this to happen. :D Cheers!
