Found this in my drafts, clearly from before Past Life or Simple Life even started; the Past Life section is new. (Not doing simple life cuz I can't be arsed rn and I'm draft-dumping)

Life Series Martyn's relationship to loyalty and betrayal is so fascinatingly woven, between intentions, actions, and outcomes

3rd Life - planned to betray the Red King at the end, killed him out of what is now one framed as of the most famous acts of loyalty and trust, and they lost the war before he got the chance to turn on Rendog; painted forever as the ever-faithful Hand of the King

Last Life - The Boogeyman made betrayal a more 'regular' thing, so Martyn killing Grian under its effects was a little more expected. Southlands held together for a while, but the on-and-off Reds being forced to leave, ending up in Mumbo and Jimmy being the first ones out for 'betraying' Grian, meant it crumbled on its own. Martyn was the last one left, using a weapon (end crystal) brought full-force to the Life Games by his 'husband' Mumbo and coming third behind Rendog (his old King) and Scott (one who bore the Boogey Curse on himself out of loyalty to his alliance)

Double Life - Martyn didn't *intend* to betray his partner by going to the Nether, that's what he does every first episode at this point; but Cleo being Cleo took it as one, and then Martyn 'betrayed' Pearl by pushing her away after their soulmates pushed the both of them away, so functionally he was alone. Even as both Cleo and Martyn knew that the survivalist parts of themselves would make them more grudgingly cooperative than people like Pearl and Scar actively 'torturing' their soulmates by harming themselves with snow and the like

Limited Life - Martyn's once again killing his chosen teammate in a way that gives them a supposed advantage (making sure Martyn gets the extra time from Scott as the last Green, and no-one else). He and his partner Scott DO make it to the final three, and Martyn DOES finally get to do his big Betrayal of the gentleman's duel, and he STARTS with Scott to make it hit harder (and also because Scott's involvement in complications for Martyn in both Last and Double Life). And he wins, on the back of this betrayal. He's finally proven right, the way to win was to turn on people right at the end (this time). Martyn's free of the Loyalty reputation. Right?

Secret Life - Almost feels like kinda a punishment for his previous behavior, in a cosmic sense. His usual early Nether trip going so bad, ending up as the first Red, and therefore not even really able to betray anyone because he's not on their side at that point. Establishes the whole Big Dog thing with Jimmy (and what point would there be to betraying Jimmy of all people), menacing people, gets temporary allyship during the Zombie Apocalypse because he's not a valid target and can kind of choose for once - and three of his Red allies drop in quick succession including Big Dog Jimmy, and he's back to basically being alone. Gets caught in the crossfire of someone else's fight.

Real Life - A bit too chaotic to fully remember, but he ends up back with Rendog, doing 3rd Life roleplay. Like home.

Wild Life - Martyn's back with Rendog again, side by side. Two towers, separate enough to mimic the 'supposedly every-man-for-himself'-ism of the Tuff Guys, and yet. Martyn goes first, while Rendog is wearing his face, and it literally fuses the two of them together, so Rendog says the next time. Loyalty and grief. And he's back as a zombie in the finale, but their whole job is summoner-loyalty at that point, and it also didn't last super long.

Past Life - Martyn ends up by Cleo's side, and stays there, with kind of no point of being tempted away from that. He loses lives quickly, and worries them a bit - "You're going to leave me alone again" - but has proven very good at surviving on Red for a long time. And he does just that. Stays by Cleo's side, joins the marriage with Rendog and Impulse for their sake but is really only there for Cleo, and turns on Impulse once Ren's dead and Impulse's loyalty looks shaky in turn. And outlives the both of them. And then he wins, in the face of someone who betrays their last ally because they think he's already dead. Loyalty until the end WAS the choice this time, even if there once again wasn't really an avenue for a true 'betrayal' - he at least kept his promise. Cleo was never alone.

an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc

and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean

and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere
