light feet land on the ground and aang's beloved glider is folded back into a staff with a quick twirl. ❝ okay , so (!) as far as i could see we're in the middle of sand , ❞ he points off to the right then turns and points again. ❝ rocks , ❞ another turn , another point. ❝ a cactus , ❞ final turn and point completes the nomad's full 360 rotation. ❝ and more sand. ❞ he's only partially joking. his attempt at finding identifiable landmarks to determine their exact position has proved less fruitful than he would've hoped.

aang has never spent much time in the deserts of sumeru , doesn't know the land as well as other familiar spaces —-- even without the relentlessly shifting the dunes changing the landscape beneath their very feet. and , for all his travels , aang is admittedly not great with maps. the nomad is more of an instinctual adventurer than seasoned navigator.

❝ the sandstorm makes it hard to see anything that way , but i think there may have been some buildings further down split in the rocks over there. could that be the spot you didn't recognize on the map ? ❞

sorry boss can't come in today i was on my way to work and then a gentle spring breeze kissed my cheek and reminded me it is a serious thing just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world

❝ we could go penguin sledding at the south pole or find the giant koi fish in kyoshi cove or see what's playing at the Ember Island Theater —-- hopefully it's better than the play they did about me. ❞ look close enough and the avatar winces slightly at the memory. brows knit together in thought , shoot up as another idea pops into his head. ❝ oh ! and i think chin village celebrates avatar day around now. ❞ ya know , if rapunzel happens to like giant effigies of her friends and unfried dough.

shoulders lift in an easy shrug. it's up to her ! ❝ but that's the beauty of traveling by sky bison. ❞ hand lifts to pat one of appa's legs , reaching up to just above the bison's elbow. ❝ you can just pick a direction and see what you find ! ❞

concentrated gust of air pushes at the door and swirls round the room creating a rather grand re-entrance for the supposedly simple monk. he lands with barely a sound , straightening up with a surprisingly polite expression for someone just shoved in a closet against their will. ❝ it's nice of you to try to help , but i can handle myself. ❞

people seeking out physical contact with aang when they're scared / unsure / startled / sad / generally emotional. a hand on his arm to confirm he's there. fingers intertwined or fisted into his clothes to keep him close. arms wrapped around him in a reassuring hug. snuggling together in appa's fur. if asked nicely , he might even let you rub his bald little head like a good luck charm.

aang being very quick to initiate physical touch with his loved ones. warm hugs every time he sees them. absentmindedly playing with their hair. casually looping arms / holding hands as they walk. slinging an arm over their shoulders / around their waist when side by side. scooping them up for rides on his glider. generally being very open and honest about how much he cares about them and how comfortable he is around them because he doesn't know any other way to be.

❝ air scooters ! it's something i invented a long time ago. like a ball of air you can ride around on. like ... ❞ the smile that forms now is tinged with the deviousness of a boy scheming. it really is easier to show than tell.

fingers splay as arms move in a series of circles progressively smaller and faster , the beginnings of an air scooter forming between the bender's hands. ❝ --— like this ! ❞ with that aang sends the scooter towards rapunzel , intent on scooping her up and taking her for a spin.

"Oh   but   it's   super   neat!"   Princess   beamed!   "I   like   how   the   marble   catches   the   sun   as   it   spins.   Sooooo   pretty!"   she   would've   continued   on   with   her   praises,   however   'air   scooter'   caused   her   to   take   pause.

"A....   what??"   melodious   giggle   left   rose-tinted   lips   as   her   head   canted   to   the   side.   "You've   gotta   explain   after   saying   that!"

❝ three years ?!?! ❞ the staff defensively pointed at the firebender falters slightly , briefly dipping towards the ground as shock pulls aang's chin pulls to his chest. he himself hasn't even known he's the avatar for a whole year yet ( minus however long he and appa were asleep ? frozen ? . . . stuck in the iceberg ) and this guy has spent three years searching for him ? ❝ but you're just a teenager ! ❞

would he have been about aang's age when he started ? he couldn't imagine. to look at the teen now and see such anger burning beneath the surface —-- was he like that three years ago too ? is this what the war katara was telling him about has done to people ?

recovery from his surprise is quick , the falter of his staff turns to a flourishing twirl that brings the handcrafted instrument to rest at his side. the threat zuko poses is seemingly temporarily forgotten as the nomad casually switches to scolding the older boy's single-minded determination. ❝ you really should find a hobby. have you tried kuai ball —-- or maybe the tsungi horn. you look like you'd be a good tsungi horn player. ❞ it's just a hunch.

aang showing appa off like a car guy but instead of popping the hood , he has appa lift his tail , pats him on one of the legs like " yeah , this baby'll get ya anywhere you wanna go. that's 10,000+ years of airbending heritage under the fur and lemme tell ya , they don't make 'em like this anymore. "

Today on headcanons Taea sends Poppins :

Aang learned how to braid Katara’s hair , and paid thorough attention to how she specifically braided hers . While this seems like a sweet moment between them , and a great way to bond after a training lesson , the reason behind it was so that Aang would know how to take care of Katara when they were older . The other reason for this was so that in his next life , and every life after , when the Avatar would meet their Katara , they would know how to braid hair like hers — a subtle , but romantic way of making sure that Katara’s memory lives on for centuries . 🩵🧡

STOOOPP this is so cute tho 😭 even death isn't gonna stop him from making sure katara is taken care of and remembered. even tho he was very sleep deprived / daydreaming , aang really did mean it when he said she's his forever girl
