"Oh shoot, I'm going to be late! It's a really important day at the lab, sorry Hersh." Claire gasped, standing up from the table. She pulled on her coat and started to walk out.

"That's quite alright, it was great to chat with you." Hershel said. Claire glanced back, giving him the smile that always melted his heart as she paused in the doorframe.

"Bye, love. See you next time!" She called, closing the door behind her. He sat there, stunned, for a long moment. His face felt warm.

"See you next time, love." He whispered to the empty room. His smile stubbornly remained for quite a few hours, the rest of his work that day a happy dream.

He didn't know there wouldn't be a next time.
