Everyday, except Sundays, expect a new musical review! My name is Tristan and I realized I was spending way too much time gushing about the same musicals and not enough time listening to others, and thus this blog was born! (most of my bway memeing takes place on @bettybuckley )

Bye Bye Birdie
Today (9/15/17) I will be reviewing Bye Bye Birdie. I have never listened to any songs or anything-all I know is that it has Chita Rivera. I will be using a plot summary as well. All I really know about this musical is that it is an older one that everyone seems to know.
Overture-
The overture starts off with a chorus of boys singing âWe love you, Conrad!â And it is actually pretty sunding. The actual instrumental is nice as well and it has the big brassy nature of most older musicals.
An English Teacher-
I feel like Iâve heard this before. Agent and songwriter Albert Peterson finds himself in trouble when rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie is drafted into the Army. Albert's secretary and sweetheart, Rosie Alvarez, comes up with a last-ditch publicity stunt to have Conrad Birdie record and perform a song before he is sent overseas. She makes Albert promise to give up the music business and to start teaching English at schools because theyâre broke. I love Chita so much!! What a pretty singer she is I love this song. They plan to have Birdie sing Albert's new song "One Last Kiss" and give one lucky girl from his fan club a real "last kiss" on The Ed Sullivan Show before going into the Army.
The Telephone Hour-
The lucky girl chosen randomly from Conrad's fan club is 15-year-old Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio. All the teenagers in Sweet Apple are catching up on the latest gossip about Kim MacAfee and Hugo Peabody going steady. This song is delightful, I love the gossip and it is so nice to hear.Â
How Lovely to Be a Woman-
Kim, excited to have a boyfriend, reflects on how happy she is with her maturity. She quits the Conrad Birdie fan club over the phone because of the new milestone happening in her life, and as she tells the news, her best friend Ursula is shocked. I really do feel like Iâve heard this song before. Deja vu perhaps? This song reflects how it used to be to be a woman in the world, and it is nice. I quite like it.
Put on a Happy Face-
Before they depart by train from New York City, local teenage girls are excited to meet Conrad, although one young girl is sad because she thinks that by the time Conrad gets out of the army, she will be too old for him. Albert advises her to be optimistic and put on a happy voice. I actually like this song.
A Normal, Healthy American Boy-
Soon, reporters arrive with questions for Conrad, but Rosie, Albert, and the girls answer for him, pushing away tabloids. Conrad receives a hero's welcome in Sweet Apple. It kind of bop and I actually really like this song a lot.
One Boy-
This song is beautiful but slow. It has a old sound that is lovely. Hugo worries that Kim likes Conrad more than she likes him, but Kim assures Hugo that he is the only one she loves.
Honestly Sincere-
Conrad shocks the town's parents and drives the teenage girls crazy with his performance of "Honestly Sincere", which causes all of the girls to faint. It is a good song, but with that context it is excellent.
Hymn for a Sunday Evening-
Conrad becomes a guest in the MacAfee house and irritates Kim's father, Harry MacAfee, by being a rude and selfish guest. Mr. MacAfee does not want Kim to kiss Conrad until Albert tells him their whole family will be on The Ed Sullivan Show. Mr. and Mrs. MacAfee, Kim, and her younger brother Randolph sing Sullivan's praises, itâs nice to see people as obsessed with being on talk shows back then as they are now.
One Last Kiss-
Hugo senses Kim's attraction to Conrad and becomes very jealous. Albert's overbearing mother, Mae Peterson, comes to break up her son's relationship with Rosie. She introduces Albert to Gloria Rasputin, a curvy blonde she met on the bus who could replace Rosie as his secretary. Gloria hopes that if she helps Albert with papers, he can get Gloria into show business, as she is a tap dancer. Unfortunately, she needs a little help getting up from her stance. Albert gives her a job to type up some revenues, and Rosie is furious but hides it from Albert.
Rosie, jealous and angry, dreams of violent ways to murder Albert. Rosie and Hugo plot to ruin the broadcast. Conrad sings on The Ed Sullivan Show, and as he leans in to kiss Kim, Hugo runs onstage and punches him in the face. On live television, Conrad faints, Rosie breaks up with Albert, and Albert, trying to cover for the mishaps of the evening, leads a chorus of "Normal American Boy". Asides from all of that PLOT that takes place this song is a low key banger tbh.
What Did I Ever See in Him?-
Despite plans to re-film the broadcast, Rosie and Kim resolve to leave Albert and Hugo, lamenting their stupidity for having fallen in love with the boys. Once again, Chita is a brilliant singer. The way she and Susan harmonize is beautiful.
A Lot of Livin' to Do-
Kim sneaks out of the house and joins the rest of the teens. Conrad decides he wants to go out and have a good time on his last night as a civilian and encourages the teens to part.Â
Kids-
When Mr. MacAfee discovers Kim has run away, he and Mrs. MacAfee lament how disobedient kids are today. Kinda forgettable because it isnât a very enjoyable song, but I guess in a way it it timeless.
Baby, Talk to Me-
Rosie ends up at Maude's Roadside Retreat and starts hitting on other men, but Albert calls her on the telephone and begs her to return to him. This is a nice song.
Kids Reprise-
Hugo tells the MacAfees and the other parents that the teenagers have gone to the Ice House, and they all declare that they don't know what's wrong with their kids. Itâs a nice reprise.
Spanish Rose-
The adults and the police arrive at the Ice House and arrest Conrad, although he doesn't appear to have done anything illegal. Kim claims she was intimidated by Conrad and gladly returns to Hugo. After a reconciliation with Albert, Rosie tells Albert's mother, Mae, that she will marry Albert despite Mae's racist objections, and to irritate her, declares she's Spanish very overtly. I love how she lists stereotypes to irritate Mae!!! Drag her Rosie!! I love this song.
Rosie-
Albert professes that everything is rosy with Rosie. This is a sweet song.
This musical has a lot of good music in it, and though Iâm not a huge Elvis fan, I actually like the story line quite a bit.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee review
Today (9/14/17) I will be reviewing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. All I know about this is that it is about a spelling bee (oops) but Iâve heard itâs good, but also that the music is bland so Iâm hoping that isnât the case. As usual, plot summary will be read. (This was supposed to be yesterdayâs oops)
The Twenty-Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee-
The musical begins with Rona Lisa Peretti entering the gymnasium to set up. As she passes by the microphone, she remembers the moment when she won the third annual spelling bee by correctly spelling syzygy. The spellers are introduced as they enter, and sing about their anticipation of the bee. Rona speaks privately to Olive Ostrovsky, who has not yet paid the entrance fee of twenty-five dollars. When asked if she has a parent in the audience who can pay, Olive reveals that she has arrived by herself on the bus. Rona decides to let the fee slide for the moment. She then introduces the official word pronouncer, Douglas Panch, who is returning from a five-year hiatus. Panch alludes to an incident five years ago, but declares that he is in a better place now. Panch introduces the intimidating-looking comfort counselor, Mitch Mahoney, who is helping at the Bee as part of his court-mandated community service. Mahoney leads the spellers in the Pledge of Allegiance. That is a lot to take in in terms of exposition. It isnât a bad song but not one Iâm particularly raving about.
The Spelling Rules/ My Favorite Moment of the Bee-
Panch leads the spellers through of the rules and Rona sings about her favorite moment. Not very significant in my opinion.
My Friend, the Dictionary-
Olive is shown to be shy and reserved, a result of her largely absent parents â her mother is in India on a spiritual journey, and her father is missing the bee to work late, as usual. She has come to love spelling by reading the dictionary in her home. This is a pretty song that is kinda sad. When Leaf Coneybear is called to spell the first time, it is revealed in a flashback that he came in third at his regional bee, but advanced to the county finals when the winner and runner-up had to attend the winner's Bat Mitzvah. His word is capybara, which he has no idea how to spell, but he ends up spelling it correctly while in a trance.
The First Goodbye-
Kinda forgettable, but I guess itâs notable since it is the first of the goodbyes.
Pandemonium-
Because this show incorporates audience volunteers, they need to give audience members easier words if they arenât good spellers. When this happens the spellers rant about how the element of luck makes the bee unfair. This is a song I actually like a lot.
I'm Not That Smart-
When Leaf is called the second time, he is given acouchi, which he again does not know how to spell. He reminisces about how his family repeatedly calls him "dumb", a sentiment that has sunken in and that he has come to believe. Again, in a trance, he spells the word correctly. This is a good song, and I like the melody.Â
The Second Goodbye-
This is a good song and the way the cast harmonizes is good.
Magic Foot-
BarfĂŠe is called, and this time sings about his technique which utilizes a magic foot. This is catchy but kind of confusing in my opinion.
Pandemonium (Reprise) / My Favorite Moment of the Bee 2-
Chip Tolentino is called next, but he is not paying attention. Rather, he is fantasizing about Leaf's attractive sister, Marigold, in the audience. When snapped out of his daze, he is reluctant to take his turn because he has an erection that is showing. Under threat of disqualification, he takes his turn, but his thoughts distract him and he begins to misspell the word. He catches himself quickly, and backs up to try to save himself, but the rules of the bee state that "the sequences of letters already spoken may not be changed". He begs for another chance, but Mitch eventually hauls him off the stage. This is kind of funny to listen to but the song is bland.
We Like Spelling-
This song is sweet, and it is about all of the kidsâ affinity for spelling. It is nice enough.
Prayer of the Comfort Counselor-
At this point, the last audience speller is eliminated. Mitch sings a special serenade to this audience member for making it this far and all of the cast sings a chorus of goodbyes. This song is full of soul.
My Unfortunate Erection (Chip's Lament)-
The remaining spellers, and Chip passes through the audience selling snacks, the punishment for being the first eliminated. He explains to the audience why he lost which is kind of awkward. Itâs odd that this is one of the catchier songs thus far, when it really shouldnât be.
Woe is Me-
Last to be introduced is Logainne, who describes her two overbearing fathers and the stress that they put on her to win. She really feels the pressure to win on her shoulders. It is a nice song.
I'm Not that Smart (Reprise)-
The bee is shown progressing through many rounds, ending with Leafâs elimination on the word chinchilla. He walks away head held high, having proven to himself, despite his elimination, that he is smart no matter what others say so it is sweet.
I Speak Six Languages-
Marcy is called to spell, and Rona, who has been announcing factoids about the spellers all along, announces that Marcy speaks five languages. Marcy reveals more about her stressful life, where she is pushed to succeed in everything, which she does not enjoy. This is a cute song and the actress playing Mona is a very good singer.
The I Love You Song-
Olive's cellphone rings & it is her father, who she has been anxiously hoping would arrive. Panch attempts to disallow her from answering the phone, but she persuades Rona to take the call for her. Logainne then begins ] rant about the bee, her fathers, and current political events. Panch, provoked by the rant and upset that he has lost control over the bee, loses his temper and lashes out at Logainne, who is next up to spell. Panch is then escorted offstage by Rona and Mitch. One of Logainne's fathers jumps onstage to calm Logainne down, and, despite his daughter's protests, pours some of his soda on the floor to make BarfÊe's foot stick and thus disrupt his technique. With Panch calmed down, Olive is called to spell. She asks what her father had said, and is sad to learn that he said he is running even later than planned. Her word is chimerical, and mirroring the word's definition, she imagines her parents being there and giving her the love that she always has wanted and yearned for, while showing the problems with her own family. The song is very emotionally charged and it really pulls my sympathy for Olive.
Woe Is Me (Reprise)-
BarfĂŠe is called to spell next, and when he uses his signature technique, the soda causes his foot to stick. Much to his surprise, he is able to spell his word correctly anyway. Logainne is next, and she over complicates her word vug and misspells it. She is sad and hopes that America âdoesnât hate herâ which is sad.
My Favorite Moment of the Bee 3 /Second-
Rona has a lot of favorite moments and I want her to stop listing them at this point. The finals are shown quickly through another montage, and Olive and BarfĂŠe continue to grow closer. I definitely prefer second over the third reprise because it offers more plot depth and is kind of catchy. Olive misspells a word and doesn't know whether to win or lose. She reassures him itâs ok and he wins the bee.
Finale-
Olive congratulates and hugs BarfĂŠe, and each character reads their epilogue, a sentence or two about what they do in the years and decades after the main action of the play ends. Its]âs a good way to end.
The Last Goodbye-
All of the characters send us off with a quick finale goodbye.
This show has an intriguing story, but isnât full of bops so if you want an exposition filled show here you go.

Irene 1973 revival review
Today (9/12/17) I will be reviewing the musical Irene. This musical is a huge piece of theater history in the fact that when it first opened in 1919 it was the longest running musical for the next two decades. And that is all I know about it. But Debbie Reynolds is in this one which is pretty cool. (Plot synopsis will be read and included-as always)
Overture-
This overture is really pretty!! It has the grandiose that you would expect from an older musical and all of the charm as well. A rather nice start if you ask me. I think it is necessary to listen to the overture of shows because while they donât offer anything to the plot and such they can really introduce the audience to the mood and vibe of a show or production.
The World Must Be Bigger Than an Avenue-
This song is oh so pretty. Irene O'Dare is an ambitious girl who wants to get out of her avenue to the greater world. Debbie Reynolds killed this and it is a certified bop sorry I donât make the rules.
What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?-
This is a very catchy song! I like it a lot.
The Family Tree-
This is a beautiful song and when listening to it the word delicate comes to mind. Irene runs a little music store with her widowed mother. Irene is sent to tune a piano for young tycoon Donald Marshall III, a Long Island society gentleman. Â
Alice Blue Gown-
Such a sweet, soothing song. Irene used to cling to an alice blue gown because it made her feel special and affluent.
They Go Wild, Simply Wild, Over Me-
Donald's cousin Ozzie wants help to jump-start a fashion business to be run by his friend, "Madame Lucy", a flamboyant male artiste, who pretends to be a famous French couturier. In this he sings of his luck with women after he begun making dresses.
An Irish Girl-
Once at Donald's estate, Irene falls in love with him, and each is captivated by how different the other is from their usual friends. This song is fire I love it so much, the instrumental parts are good the vocals are good everything about this is great.
Mother Angel Darling-
Irene tries to have a sentimental moment with her mother and I guess it is sweet, but her mom literally says Irene wasnât a pretty baby Iâm??? This is a kinda good song nevertheless.
The Riviera Rage-
This is an instrumental that is actually pretty good, if I havenât mentioned so thus far all of the orchestrations in this sound excellent. Very brassy and I love it.
I'm Always Chasing Rainbows-
This song reminds me of âMaybe This Timeâ from Cabaret. I think it would be a killer audition song, it is really good.
The Last Part of Evâry Party-
What a nostalgic song it is just so classic musical theater and absolutely beautiful.
We're Getting Away With It-
Madame Lucy, Helen, Jane and Ozzie are overjoyed at their success, as Madame Lucy's creations are now world-famous. What a fun song this would be to perform with friends, as always it is stunning.
Irene-
A big showy title song about Irene. Somehow it doesnât stick as much as the rest of the songs.
The Great Lover Tango-
I love tangos so by default I love this. Also they rhymed tango with BOOMERANGO, I absolutely love this.
Valentino does it, Madam Lucy does it!
Madame Lucy does it?!
Madame Lucy does it!
Then I can do it too!
You Made Me Love You-
This is a sweet little song between Irene and Donald.Â
You Made Me Love You (reprise)-
At the grand ball at Donald's estate, Irene finds her mother brokenhearted over the love of her life, Liam O'Dougherty. It turns out that Madame Lucy is Liam O'Dougherty, and he reunites happily with Irene's mother. This is very cute!! Aaahh!!
Finale-
Donald announces that he loves Irene, and her true identity is revealed. He tells her: "You made me love you", and all ends happily.
Such a cute musical!!! What it lacks in plot is makes up for in bops!!! Listen to it, it has Debbie Reynolds in her Broadway debut.

Come From Away review
Today (9/11/17) I will be reviewing Come From Away. Honestly, even though this show is from the 2016-2017 season, all I know about it is that it is about 9/11. And also?? Iâm so sorry Iâm doing it today I try to plan out the days I do in advance to balance out the newer shows I do compared to the older shows I do and this is something from a newer season Iâve been wanting to listen to. I didnât watch the Tonyâs so Iâve never heard any songs from this, and as usual I will be reading a plot description.Â
Welcome To The Rock-
The start is good, and I like the melody and the companyâs voices. They each describe what they were doing on morning of September 11, 2001, the morning of the twin towers attacks, 16 years ago today.Unfortunate timing I know--to be reviewing it today. However, I must say that I do like this song and the characters seem nice enough.
38 Planes-
The event had resulted with the US airspace being closed, forcing 38 planes to be diverted and land unexpectedly at the Gander aiport, doubling the population of the small town of Newfoundland. The town is not ready for the huge influx of people. I like this song, at 1 minute you canât really go wrong anyway. I think it serves as a great plot device while being really pretty.
Blankets and Bedding-
The Gander townspeople spring to action and prepare to house, feed, clothe and comfort the nearly 7,000 passengers (along with 19 animals in cargo). They feel like they need to do everything they can to help in this time of need. Also Iâm kinda bopping to this because it is pretty good, and it shows off good nature which is always nice in time of crisis.
28 Hours / Wherever We Are-
In the mean time. no one is allowed to leave the planes , forcing them to deal with confusing and conflicting information about what has happened and why they were suddenly grounded. This is really good, especially hearing the concern within the voices of the passengers especially when talking to their families. Itâs a good song and it has some of the meat of the musical within it.
Darkness and Trees-
Once allowed off the planes and transferred to several different emergency shelters in and around Gander. This sounds more ominous than the last song, although i still really like it.
On the Bus-
This follows the last tune and carries on, I still like it though.Â
Darkness and Trees (reprise)-
This ends the train of them being confused and lost, the newcomers are now âout of the darknessâ. This song hits a cord because the people who were on the planes never even knew what was going on until they could watch the news.
Lead Us Out of the Night-
The passengers and crew watch replays of the attacks on the news and learn the true reason about why they were grounded being the attacks.Â
Phoning Home / Costume Party-
When everyone is phoning their families it is especially sad and enlightening to see how people react when put in a situation like this. Everyone realizes that they are changed after the events, as if theyâre different people. This song is more exposition, with sweet parts, humorous parts and introspective parts. I love the comparison of having these new donated clothes to being in a costume party.
I Am Here-
Two of the characters, Beulah and Hannah, bond over the fact that both of their sons are firefighters, but Hannah´s son is missing. Hannah is regretting the fact that she canât get in touch with her son, and that she isnât doing anything to look for him even though he is missing. It is a pretty song for the plot purpose it serves.
Prayer-
Beulah and Hannah go to church together, whilst everyone also getâs in touch with their own respective spirituality. This song is quite nice, and I enjoyed people regaining a sense of faith in those hard times.
On the Edge-
With tensions and fear on the rise, the passengers are invited to be initiated as honorary Newfoundlanders at the local bar.
In the Bar/Heave Away-
Spirits get lighter and everyone getâs much more relaxed. The heave away part is kinda fire and it it a nice more upbeat song.
Screech In-
People are still getting introduced and acquainted with each other. Itâs really nice to see them bonding after the former animosity that was seen.
Me and the Sky-
The gravity of the attacks nevertheless continues to set in as US airspace is eventually reopened. One trailblazing pilot, Beverley Bass, comments on how her once optimistic view of the world has suddenly changed because of the event. This is a really great song that I actually find very motivational! It is inspiring to see how she has grown into a fully fledged pilot under oppression and misogyny, and how she reacts when her passion is used for evil. It gives the perception that not everything is perfectly good.Â
The Dover Fault-
They go to see the amazing sight that is the dover fault, forgettable because it isnât a song. But the instrumentals are good.
Stop the World-
While one pair of passengers starts to develop a romance despite the terrible thing that brought them together, another pair sees their long-term relationship fall apart under the stress of the event. It is a beautiful song.
38 Planes â Reprise/Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere-
As the passengers and crew fly away to their homes, they joyously exchange stories of the immense kindness and generosity that was shown to them by the Newfoundland strangers in their time of need. They are all so grateful for the treatment they received and the good feelings they have. However, before boarding, a Muslim passenger is forced to do a strip search prior to boarding, which exemplifies the prejudice felt in the next coming years.
Something's Missing-
After all of the commotion, the newfoundlanders feel rather empty without all of the extra people. They were each changed by all of the people they had met and the experiences they each had.
10 Years Later-
In 2011, all of the plane people come back.
Finale-
This is how they celebrate the arrival of all of the plane people, it is kind of a reprise of âWelcome To The Rock.â They each reminisce of all the memories they had and all of the ways theyâve changed for the better since 9/11.
Screech Out-
This instrumental is very good! I like it as an ending to the show!
WHAT A SHOW! Now I see where all the praise has come from. I swear on my life I did not plan to review this on 9/11, it just sorta happened. And then I realized âoh no youâre gonna look weird it IS 9/11 today afterâ but I chose to disregard that to listen to a piece of art. Honestly, go listen or see come from away it is extremely good.

Pippin review
Today(9/9/17) I will review Pippin which is 2/2 of the musicals I am doing today and todayâs official musical. I will be listening to the OBC, the revival will wait for another day. I actually now absolutely nothing about this show so this must be fun. As always, I have a summary pulled up as well. Letâs begin!
Magic to Do-
This song has such a nice opening, and it has a catchy melody. An acting troupe begin a story about a boy prince searching for existential fulfillment. They reveal that the boy who is to play the prince, named Pippin, is a new actor. I think this song is a fantastic way to start off this show.
Corner Of The Sky-
Pippin talks to some scholars about is need to belong, to which they applaud him on his quest for his most wanted life. This song is slower paced, but even still I really like it. It really rings different from most other musical theater songs about fulfillment Iâve heard which is a nice change, theyâre important for plot but can be oh so boring. I rather like this.
War Is A Science-
I love this song!! Itâs catchy and has that timeless feeling of nostalgia that a song like this can bring up. In this, Pippinâs father, King Charles, is pretty uncomfortable speaking with his educated son or expressing any loving emotions. Pippin also meets up with his stepmother Fastrada, and her dumb son Lewis. Charles and Lewis are planning on going into a battle against the Visigoths soon, and Pippin begs Charles to take him along so as to prove himself. Charles eventually agrees and proceeds to explain a battle plan to his men. This is a song I really like actually.
Glory-
Once in battle, the Leading Player re-enters to lead the troupe in a mock battle using glitz and glamour to glorify warfare and violence. This is a great number because I love the troupe. This charade of war does not appeal to Pippin, and he flees into the countryside.
Simple Joys-
The Leading Player tells the audience of Pippin's travels through the country, until he stops at his exiled grandmother's estate. Once again, let me state that I love the troupe and The Leading Player so this song is great.
No Time At All-
Pippinâs exiled paternal grandmother, Berthe, tells Pippin that he is too serious and basically tells him to chill. She is great!! I love her voice and the message of this song and rings extremely true to me.
Oh its time to keep livinâ! Time to keep takinâ from this world Iâm givinâ!
With You-
Pippin takes this advice and decides to search for something less serious, and has a lot of meaningless sexual encounters that leave him empty. It is a nice, quieter song which contrasts from the boldness of the rest. I like it well enough, especially the change it signifies in the character.
Spread A Little Sunshine-
I really really do love this song, it is absoluetly beautiful, vocals and melody. The Leading Player then tells Pippin that perhaps he should fight tyranny, and uses Charles as a perfect example of an uneducated tyrant to fight. Pippin plans an uprising, and Fastrada is ecstatic to hear that perhaps Charles and Pippin will both die so that her beloved Lewis can become king. Fastrada arranges the murder of Charles, and Pippin falls victim to her plot.
Morning Glow-
While Charles is praying, Pippin makes his move and murders him. This song is nice enough but kinda forgettable. Although, this is also the end of act 1.
On The Right Track-
Pippin tries, and fails, to grant peopleâs wishes to the best of his abilities. Since he is also forced to act as a tyrant, he begs The Leading Player to bring his father back to life. After experimenting with art and religion, he falls into monumental despair and collapses on the floor. This song is definitely a good start to act 2, and it is a nice song.
Kind Of Woman-
Widowed farm-owner Catherine finds Pippin on the street and fancies him. This is a pretty song, and I like how Catherine goes after what she wants like that.
Extraordinary-
When Pippin starts working at the farm he thinks he is too special for everyday mundane tasks. And while this is pretentious, he was king once so that might be a given. It is nice enough but unlikable with context.
Love Song-
This is an actually really pretty song. Catherine and Pippin harmonize well and they do sound like they really do love each other. This song is beautiful in that respect.
I guess Iâll Miss The Man-
Pippin leaves the estate and Catherine reflects on how she feels. This song is likeable, Pippin will always roam for his purpose it seems. He canât make connections which is kinda sad.
Finale-
All alone on a stage, Pippin is surrounded by the Leading Player and the various troupe members. They all suggest that Pippin complete the most perfect act ever: the Finale. They tell Pippin to jump into a box of fire, light himself up, and âbecome one with the flame.â Pippin was at first hesitant, but his resolve gives in. The only person in the troupe willing to stop him was Catherine, or the woman playing her rather. Catherine and her son Theo stand by Pippin and defy the script and all of the troupe, including The Leading Player. The Leading Player is furious and tells everyone involved with the show to leave, including the orchestra  Having experimented with every possible path to fulfillment, he feels calmer, and realizes that maybe the most fulfilling road of all is a modest, ordinary life.
Pippin has good music, yet a confusing story. How does the troupe tie in with the acting? Are their names the characterâs names? It is a rather odd show--but it is a show where the core message is still able to shine through which is great.Â

Avenue Q review
Today (9/9/17) I will be listening and reviewing Avenue Q. This is 1/2 of a 2 musical review I am doing today because I skipped yesterdayâs because I was extremely tired (oops). All I really know about this musical is that it uses puppets and Iâve heard snippets from a few songs. I generally like to go in blind to musicals if Iâm reviewing them for the first time so perusal, I will be reading a plot synopsis and trying to interweave the important plot points withing my thoughts so it seems like a cohesive review.
The Avenue Q Theme-Â
This theme is somewhat mocking of Sesame Street and it sets the setting for the story. Itâs sing-songy and catchy enough.
What Do You Do with a B.A. In English / It Sucks to Be Me-
Princeton is nervous about finding his purpose in life, but his priorities including finding an apartment and a job, with no work experience and an English degree, which is âuselessâ. Beginning his search on Avenue A, he finally finds an affordable apartment on Avenue Q. His new neighbors are Kate Monster, a kindergarten teaching assistant who canât get a date, Rod, an anal-retentive banker, Nicky, Rod's slacker roommate, Brian, an aspiring unemployed comedian, Christmas Eve, Brian's Japanese fiance and a therapist with no clients, Trekkie Monster, a surly recluse who surfs the Internet all day in search of porn and Gary Coleman, the building superintendent. They each argue over whose life sucks the most. This is a good introduction to the characters and it is a pretty nice song. It sets up the theme of the struggles each person kinda exemplifies their respective flaws which is nice.
If You Were Gay-
Rod is quietly reading his favorite book, Broadway Musicals of the 1940â˛s, when Nicky comes home. Nicky says that as he was on the subway, he thought a man was hitting on him. Rod getâs kinda defensive, and Nicky says he would be fine with Rod should he be gay. This was one of the songs Iâve heard some of prior and it is hilarious. I would love to perform this or have someone sing it to me.
If it were me, I would feel free to say that I was gay, but Iâm not gay.
Purpose-
Princeton finds a penny from the year he was born and feels like it is a sign that the future is bright. He yearns to find his purpose, and by extension himself. I guess I like this song and it sounds like it isnât very satirical as much as the rest of the show is, but it still kinda critiques âmillennialâ culture. Which is interesting because this was almost 15 years ago and people still want to find their purposes.
Everyoneâs a Little Bit Racist-
When Princeton asks Kate if her and Trekkie are related, she says he is racist. To which they each admit they are a little bit racist and everyone joins in. This is another song Iâve heard some of before, and while it does ring true it kinda dismisses racism, but hey, at least it is catchy!
Not all monsters are related!
The Internet Is for Porn-
Kate getâs to teach her first lesson alone, and chooses the topic to be about the internet and itâs educational attributes. To which Trekkie chooses to crash her lesson and tell her how it is about porn. This is another one Iâve heard before and it is one of the more vulgar songs Iâve heard thus far- it is still funny though
Mix Tape-
His song selections are contradicting, making her wonder what message he is trying to send with all the mixed messages, but she decides that he must like her. This is a song I genuinely like and I think itâs sweet that Kate finally getâs a date.
I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today-
This is Brianâs stand up act, and it doesnât get much attention. All I can say is I can see why he is unemployed.
Special-
Brian then introduces âLucy the Slutâ who performs Special, a rather seductive cabaret number. But what her song is about (besides sex) is about how she can make someone feel special which contradicts the overall theme of people being ordinary that this musical is about.
You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)-
The Bad Idea Bears suggest that Kate and Princeton order some âharmlessâ Long Island Iced Teas, and once Kate is drunk, that Princeton should take her home to bed. Kate and Princeton then have very vocal sex. Gary answers angry calls from other tenants but refuses to interrupt, because theyâre having sex. I really like this song, but I donât think Iâd come back to it that much because of the context.
Fantasies Come True-
Rod hears Nicky tell him that he loves him in his sleep, and is ecstatic until he realizes that it was really himself who was dreaming after Nicky wakes him up. Kate and Princeton have some pillow talk and share their mutual love, and Princeton gives Kate his lucky penny seen from âPurposeâ. I like this but the Rod parts are sad because of his unrequited love.
My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada-
During Christmas Eve and Brianâs wedding, Nicky tells everyone he thinks Rod is gay. Rod proceeds to tell everyone he has a girlfriend named Alberta in Vancouver and tells Nicky that he is no longer welcome in their apartment. I really like this song because it is goofy and catchy and I think it is really funny how obvious it is that Rod is just trying to cover himself.
There's a Fine, Fine Line-
Kate catches the bouquet from Christmas Eve and Princeton reveals to her thatt he has a fear of commitment and asks if they can just be friends and Kate says she has plenty of friends and breaks off their relationship. This song is amazig you can really feel the emotion. This is also the end of act 1.
There is Life Outside Your Apartment-
After being broken up with, Princeton stays holed up in his apartment until coaxed out by some of his neighbors. Lucy is looking for a place to crash and seduces, Princeton, whoâs looking to rebound. I think this is a good way to set up conflict for act 2.
The More You Ruv Someone-
Kate is angry about this, and Christmas Eve says she wouldnât be angry is she didnât love him. This is beautiful and I really think it has some value with more realistic life lessons.
Schadenfreude-
Nicky, being homeless talks to Gary who is actually feeling good about the situation. They both agree that they each take pleasure in others pain. This is a good song, and it brings up a lot of reasons why people laugh at pain which is fun to point out. Kate writes a note to Princeton suggesting that they rendezvous at the Empire State Building and leaves it with Lucy who promptly destroys it. On the Empire State Building's viewing platform, Kate, thinking that Princeton has stood her up, throws his lucky penny away. A hundred stories below, Lucy, walking by on Fifth Avenue, is knocked unconscious by the penny. Kate and Princeton unsuccessfully try to work out their problems over Lucy's comatose body.
I Wish I Could Go Back to College-
Princeton, Kate and Nicky dream of returning to happier times when they were in college. This is a quieter song because all these characters are suffering, and that toned down effect is necessary at this point.
The Money Song-
Princeton gives a still-homeless panhandling Nicky a quarter, and marvels at how fantastic he feels. Since thinking only about himself has gotten him nowhere so far he decides to raise money to build Kateâs Monster school. He asks everyone for money, but doesnât get nearly enough. This song points out how other people only give money to stroke their ego.
School for Monsters/The Money Song (Reprise)-
The neighbors hit up Trekkie, and since he has problems from his childhood that he thinks a monster school wouldâve fixed, he donates ten million dollars. All I can say about this is that this is one of the most iconic character developments Iâve ever seen.
There's a Fine, Fine Line (Reprise)/ What Do You Do with a BA in English (Reprise)-
Kate gets ready to open her new school. Brian lands a consulting job and Christmas Eve finally has a client (who turns out to be Rod), so they move out to a better neighborhood. Rod finally comes out, and no one is surprised, and he takes Nicky back in. Nicky found Rod a boyfriend named Ricky who looks and sound like Nicky, but with muscles. The Bad Idea Bears discover Scientology. Lucy, recovered from her head injury, becomes a born-again Christian and takes a vow of chastity. Kate and Princeton agree to give their relationship another go.
 For Now-
A new college grad looks into moving in and Princeton finally finds his purpose: to take his experiences and turn them into a Broadway musical. Everyone immediately mocks him.The cast goes on to say that every thing in life is temporary. And it ends the musical on a good note.
This musical is somewhat vulgar but offers a nice perspective on young adulthood with catchy-children showâs like songs. I thought it was really original, the plot was complex and the characters were each interesting enough.

Something Rotten review
Today (9/7/17) I will be reviewing Something Rotten. I actually donât know much about this, although several of my friends recommended me to listen to this. So I will have to read a plot summary, especially today. Iâm excited and wanna jump right on in I hear it has something to do with Shakespeare? Well here we go!
Welcome To The Renaissance-
The song starts off slow, but when the rest of the ensemble comes in it gains pace. I like it. The clapping is fantastic, and the characters saying âShakespeare!â over a guitar riff is absolutely amazing. This song had started off with âThe Minstrelâ welcoming the audience to the Renaissance, he goes on to tell us that "not everybody is getting what he wants", referring to the character Nick Bottom, who is running a theatre troupe with his brother Nigel. They are rehearsing for their upcoming play "Richard II", while Shakespeare is opening Romeo and Juliette. Lord Clapham, a patron who trusts the brothers and raises funds for their production, enters to announce that Shakespeare is doing "Richard II". The news pisses Nick off, because Shakespeare has already done "Richard II", and the thought of going backwards really seems absurd to him.
God, I Hate Shakespeare-
In this, Nick rants to the troupe members about his hatred off Shakespeare. I really love this song, it is catchy and memorable. After this Lord Clapham leaves, telling the brothers he is going to stop funding their troupe unless they have another play by the next morning.
Right Hand Man-
Nick and his wife, Bea, are saving for a better life and Nick tries to crack open the money box until she smacks his hand away. This song is her trying to convince Nick that she has what it takes to help raise funds. This song is done well, and Heidi Blickenstaffâs singing is terrific.
God, I Hate Shakespeare (Reprise)-
In this song, Nick realizes the reason he hates Shakespeare is because he is envious of him. So Nick steals the money box and sees a Soothsayer. This song is nice for moving along the plot, so I am fine with it.
A Musical-
This is the song that everyone knows is from Something Rotten. When Nick asks the soothsayer what the next thing will be, he suggests a musical. This song is so catchy and ironic and I love it for that. The references to Les MisĂŠrables, Seussical, Chicago, Annie, Sweet Charity and Evita were hilarious. The latter four were only auditory! This song is spectacular and I see why people love it so now.
What could be more amazing than a musical?
The Black Death-
I love the opening so much! Its really catchy and maybe shouldnât be because of the subject but who cares, right? This is when they decide to do âThe Black Deathâ as a musical, perform it for the Lord Clapham and he is disgusted. I canât blame him but itâs still hella catchy.
I Love The Way-
This song is soothing and I am neutral about it, I find it pleasing but not spectacular. This when Portia, a puritan Nigel has fallen in love with, and Nigel discuss their love of poetry.
Will Power-
This is a solid bop,and this is a performance of Shakespeare in the park as he performs for the people.Â
Bottomâs Gonna Be On Top-
Nick goes back to the soothsayer with what he has left of the money he has stolen from the Money Box. He asks him to tell him what Shakespeare's new hit is going to be, and Nostradamus sees âHamletâ, but misinterprets it as "Omelette", among other mistakes. Nick dreams of a future where he tops Shakespeare and becomes the person everyone enjoys. This rings back to the reprise of âI Hate Shakespeareâ where he wants to become better. Also the tap dancing is great here. This is also the end of act 1.
Welcome to the Renaissance (Reprise)-
The Minstrel welcomes the audience back and tells them of the stresses that the Bottom brothers and Shakespeare face, such as not having their story written or the pressure to be original.Â
Hard To Be The Bard-
Shakespeare is stressed about being able to write a play, as well as keeping up his fame. Shakespeare is informed by a spy about Nick having seen a soothsayer. This song is very good, honestly all the songs with Shakespeare are.
Itâs Eggs!-
This is the theatre troupeâs rehearsal of Omelette and it is pretty good. Short and sweet.
We See The Light!-
Nigel sneaks out to London Bridge to see Portia, where he recites her another poem about his love. He is worrying about their future together, but Portia reassures him by saying that everyone, Nick and Brother Jeremiah included, will change their minds about their relationship when they hear Nigel's beautiful sonnets. This song is good and catchy, with everyoneâs voices blending into a single voice in a good way. Nigel is not very happy with "Omelette" and claims that it doesn't feel right. Brother Jeremiah interrupts the lovers and takes Portia away to be imprisoned in a tower for disobeying. Miserable by losing Portia, Nigel becomes inspired to write a completely different play that is revealed to be Hamlet.
 To Thine Old Self-
Nigel tries to pitch Hamlet to Nick, but Nick refuses to give up the breakfast theme and Omelette. When Nigel leaves he is met by Shakespeare who steal his play under the lie of improving it.Â
Right Hand Man (Reprise)-
Nigel runs into Bea, who explains to him that they should still trust Nick because they can always fall on him if they need him. This reprise is not as dramatic as the earlier song, but it doesnât need to be. Itâs downplayed to be more sympathetic and I like that.
Something Rotten!/Make An Omelette!-
This song is a big part of the musical and it serves as a plot point and is just plain fun. Again, there are many musical references. Towards the end of the number, Shakespeare reveals himself and sues the brothers. The troupe and Nigel find out that Nostradamus is a soothsayer, and are horrified about Nick deceiving them.
To Thine Own Self (Reprise)-
During the trial Nick is sentenced to beheading and Bea enters, disguised as a lawyer, to say Nick has already lost his head. She has made a deal with Shakespeare that they will be exiled to America, Portia is back from the tower and joins all of them to exile in America.
Finale-
They all sing about being in America with fantastic new opportunities. Nick hears about the opening of Shakespeare's new masterpiece, Hamlet, and Nostradamus replies "I was this close". This is a good closing number for a fantastic sounding show.
All in all this is a good musical. I love the irony and comedy and I think it is actually pretty original. The plot about stealing and spying to be creative and how that doesnât work is a good moral. The songs are great and it really does bring something new to the table.

Anything Goes review (1988 revival)
Today (9/6/17) I will be listening and reviewing Anything Goes. Why did I chose this particular one? Hard to say. Although eventually I would like to listen to the original one and the more recent revival as well. The only piece of this musical I have heard is the song, âAnything Goesâ of the Tony awards performance for this show, so I am excited to hear more.Â
Prelude-
The title song to a simple tune until it fades out for a swing instrumental. I like it well enough. In a plot summary I read, that this about, Billy Crocker, a young Wall Street broker, whom has fallen in love at first sight with a  girl he met in a taxi. His boss, Elisha J. Whitney, is preparing to make a business deal and is going to travel to London aboard the SS American.Â
I Get A Kick Out of You-
I love Patti Luponeâs voice!!! The tune of this song is nice and it flows nicely. Nightclub singer Reno Sweeney will be traveling aboard the same ship who is a friend of Billyâs. In this Reno is singing to Billy and it is about her secret affection for him.
There's No Cure Like Travel/Bon Voyage-
I like this song, it really does remind me of classical musical theater, fitting since this was composed in 1934. It is sung by the passengers of the SS American, who are leaving their loved ones and rejoicing. Because after all, thereâs no cure like travel!
Youâre the Top-
In this, Reno and Billy reaffirm their friendship. I love the lyrics and the melody, again I have to mention just how much I love the swing-ish elements that are found here. Reno and Billy gush about each other in this song, and I have to say that I love their voice. The casting in this is fantastic, you can hear joy in the performances, which really makes me wonder what this performance would sound like live if it is this good.
Easy To Love-
Here, Billy chooses to make an advance on Hope. And although she turns him away, she secretly agrees with him. Billyâs singing here is brilliant.
I Want to Row On the Crew/Sailor's Chant-
I love the part of âI Want to Row On the Crewâ, it is fantastic. The Sailorâs Chant is very nostagic and rings old Disney for me.
Friendship-
I love this duet! It is going to be my go to song to sing with friends from now on (if I can convince any that is). In this, Reno and Moonface sing about their strong bond.Â
It's De-Lovely-
Itâs delightful! Itâs delicious! Itâs delectable! Its delirious! Its dilemma! Its delimit! Its deluxe! Its de-lovely! In this song, I find myself dancing along to it. This is a perfect song for a love song and a thorough bop. Billy and Hope have a romantic moment and it is actually kinda cute.
Anything Goes-
Title soooooooooooooong time! I love this one so much!! As you may recall from the preamble, this is the only song I knew from this show prior, and I still love it so. And once again let me reiterate, I live for Patti Lupone, so of course I love this. Even so, however, I think I like this because of the strong music, tap and lyrics. It just seems like itâd be such a fun song to belt or just talk through fast. This song is sung at the end of act 1, when Reno begins to consider marrying Evelyn (Hopeâs fiance).
Entr' Acte-
This instrumental is delightful. There isnât much to say besides that.
Public Enemy Number One-
If I can say this, it kinda reminds me of âMeranoâ from CHESS. In this Billy is honored by the crew as âPublic Enemy Number Oneâ. It is a sweet song that is fine enough.
Blow, Gabriel, Blow-
The song starts with a sermon like sequence from Reno, this song is absolutely lovely. It is fantastic. This is a terrific song and I love the vocals and everything about it!Â
Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye-
This is sung by Hope after Billy is arrested, when she realizes she's in love too late. I think it is fine, but not my favorite in the show.
Be Like the Bluebird-
Moonface and Billy are in prison as they are both revealed to be their true selves, Billy as not Snakeface and Moonface not as the minister. They are thrown in the brig, and Moon sings this to cheer Billy up. It is nice but not notable in my eyes.
All Through the Night-Â
This song is extremely saccharine. And I like it, especially the soothing sound of it.
The Gypsy in Me-
In this, Evelyn sings to Reno that she letâs the gypsy out of him. I like the beginning more than the end.
Buddie, Beware-
Okay, this is a certified bop. Once again the swing and nostalgia factors are on point, as well as the singing on the actress of Ermaâs part. Erma sings this to the sailors, and it is dramatic in the best ways.
I Get a Kick Out of You/Anything Goes (Reprise)-
This is the finale, and all is resolved! Billy and Hope are wed, as are Reno and Evelyn. Moon is declared harmless and all is well. A short and sweet number to a nice musical.
I liked this musical enough, I love the cast and the melodies of some of the songs are just wonderful. It is a nice musical if you are wanting to journey back to an older sound. I love it and will definitely come back to some of these songs from time to time, but some songs were kinda boring and donât deserve that treatment.

Chess the musical review
Today (9/5/17) I will be reviewing Chess. I first heard of Chess back when I was hardcore stanning ABBA, because I am a huge ABBA stan, so naturally I had previously known about Bjorn and Bennyâs musicals, though they had never interested me enough to look into them. Now that I am interested in musicals more in general, itâll be fun to finally look into this! I know absolutely nothing about this! What fun! âMamma Mia!â Will come eventually. One thing is certain: this musical will definitely have bops. I will read a summary of the plot whilst listening as well to get a deeper understanding.
Merano-Â
I cannot distinguish half of what is being said, however, the choral quality of the voices is absolutely pleasing to the ears. The whistling in between the huge orchestrations and the pop melody are fantastic. The synth pop is deliciously 80â˛s and the vocals are delightful. The song is about the upcoming World Chess Championship, which is to be held in Merano, Italy. The current world champion, Freddie Trumper of the US, arrives with his second and presumed lover: Florence.
The Russian and Molokov/Where I Want to be-
This is a wonderful song filled with the sounds of suspense. The beats, the vocals and the piano, they all create a smooth digestible sound and I live for it. When it getâs to Where I Want to be it is BOP CITY. I love it and it is premium head banging material. In this, the Soviet Russian challenger, Anatoly Sergievsky, argues with his second, Molokov . Later by himself, Anatoly reflects on the giving up on his dreams to get to where he is today.
Opening Ceremony-
Bjorn Skifs!!!!! This has such a good sound, and the lyrics are brilliant. This is so pop-ish and I live for it. When the USSR comes in, I found myself still dancing, this musical is perfection between the composers (B and B) and the lyricist (Tim Rice). The guitar is brilliant and all 9 minutes of this song are fantastic.
Quartet ( A Model of Docorum and Tranquilty) -
During the intense match, Freddie had suddenly thrown the chessboard to the floor and stormed out of the arena , leaving Florence to negotiate with Anatoly, Molokov, and The Arbiter, hence the chorus. I love how their voices blend into one.
The American and Florence/Nobody´s Side-
Florence had scolded Freddie, and they fought about the politics of the tournament until he had decided to turn the argument toward her missing father, who was believed captured or killed by Soviet forces during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Which, she laments over alone during Nobodyâs Side. And I live for Nobodyâs Side! Never make a promise or plan! Take a little love where you can! Nobodyâs on nobodyâs side! An ultimate betrayal bop!
Chess-
This is primarily instrumental, and very beautiful at that. There are more intense high points and low points in this song, and the way it escalates is just enchanting.
Mountain Duet-
Florence sings about her feelings on the mountain, in which she admits she feels for Anatoly. Also this is kinda my jam.
Florence Quits-
So Florence and Freddie finally call it quits, and this song is nice, but in my opinion it doesnât compare to the others? Still good though.
Embassy Lament-
I live this song so much!!! The type writer keys go hard!!! So Anatoly defects from the Soviets to join the British embassy and is met with this. Freddie had quit the tournament, leaving Anatoly champion.
Anthem-
This song is beautiful and is Anatoly telling the press that borders only lie around his press and it uses that phrase verbatim- The prose is on point.
One Night In Bangkok-
Okay this is fire and I live for it it is such a gem I just have to gush. This song kicks off Act 2 and Anatoly is ready to defend his previous championship, wherein Freddie is already there and talking to the locals. Also Anatolyâs estranged wife, Svetlana, from Russia returns, which Anatoly suspects is part of a plan to shame him into returning to the Soviet Union.
Heaven Help my Heart-
This song is sweet, but forgettable imo.
Argument-
This song is really good!!
I Know Him So Well-
This song is an amazing jam, and a moving piece. Florence believes it would be best for Anatoly to return to his children and Svetlana.
The Deal ( No Deal)-
This song goes extremely hard, and it digs up the synth pop again. Freddie goes to convince Anatoly to throw the game and it is a fANTASTIC song.
Pity the Child-
Freddie laments over his sad, emotionally closed childhood. It brings more perspective onto him and his upbringing. It is a very emotionally charged song and gets very intense and it is moving. The drums and guitar are absolutely brilliant.
Endgame-
This is beautiful, and getâs even more so when the intensity comes into play. The dynamics of the characters comes into play when they sing their feelings about the events of the game, their lives and the mood of of it all.
Nothing you have said is revelation!
The Epilogue/You and I/The Story of Chess-
This is in which Florence and Anatoly reflect over their love, and it is a beautiful song at that. A brilliant ending to a brilliant musical.
Well, all in all I loved it!! My hypothesis at the start proved to be true- It was full of bops. It was great, even good enough to where I could consider calling it a favorite! I would definitely recommend you give it a listen if you havenât yet!
8.9/10

Carrie the musical review
Today (9/4/17) I will be listening and reviewing Carrie: The Musical (Premier Cast Recording). Since, I already know about this franchise because of the movies I may be a little biased, but any new interpretation deserves a clean slate.
In-
There is a lot going on in this and I really like it all. There is a cacophony of sound and you can hear the anxiety and angst that is practically dripping from these kids. When life âdoesnât begin until youâre in.â It makes more sense why theyâd want to bully Carrie, and I can already hear the verbal abuse sheâs going through. This reminds me of âBeautifulâ from Heathers except it seems more grounded and attached to the Carrie franchise which I like, I mean this is a horror story and not just a dark comedy. It makes the other teens seem to each be a mix of vulgar, vulnerable, miserable and malicious so I like the complexity that this song presents and I think it is a great opening for this show.
Carrie-
Carrie goes through so much, and the kids chanting âScary Whiteâ sounds very overwhelming, when she describes how they torment her each day it made me feel horrible. Thereâs a lot of aggression in this song, yet at the same time it is a powerful feel good. Carrie wants people to know her and care. I am excited at the reference of her mother because thatâs my favorite character in the movie (oops).
Open Your Heart-
This brings into play the effect of Carrieâs aggressive religious upbringing and how it has oppressed her. Itâs short and sweet, and a precursor to when it is more apparent how much religion affects her.
And Eve Was Weak-
Okay, this song is straight fire. Carrie is trying to understand her period and her mother goes full gospel on her and I LOVE IT. âAnd I was weak!â Carrieâs mom takes out her emotions of her daughter and the screech as Carrie is locked away indicates is painful.
The World According To Chris-
This is kinda a bop. The bullyâs anthem is deceptively peppy while talking about how they hate most people and hurt them. Sue comes to terms with how she treats Carrie with Tommy and wants to begin helping her. Chris repeatedly tells Sue that she shouldnât feel sorry because theyâre the ones on top, Sue isnât deterred.
Evening Prayers-
âIf she loves me, why do I feel so alone?â Both Carrie and her Mom feel like the only people they have are each other and both go about it in different ways. Carrie is saddened by this and her mother thrives off of it, which is essentially the dynamic between the two. I like this song.
Dreamer in Disguise-
âAn eagle is just another bird, until he can spread its wings.â I like this song well enough but it definitely isnât my favorite. However, the prose is kind good.
Once You See-
âOnce you see, you canât unsee.â This is a filler song but it is also good character development.
Unsuspecting Hearts-
When Miss Gardner says Carrie is beautiful and Carrie says, âMe?â it shows how much self doubt she has. Also the idea of going to prom is now in the air. The harmonizing iS GREAT.
Do Me A Favor-
Sue wants to help Carrie out while Chris wants to destroy her. There is a softer side to Sue and Tommyâs conversation while the song is much more rock with Chris and Billyâs conversation. Tommy is very hesitant because of his status. This song reminds me of In but is more towards Plot rather than character development.
I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance-
Carrie is very hopeful about the promise of prom and her mother iS NOT HAPPY. She is still scared of herself in her youth and wants to protect Carrie from sin and recalls all of her past. Marin Mazzie is FANTASTIC. This had been the only song I had heard prior to this full listen through and I love it more. This is also when her mother learns of Carrieâs telekinesis which is very important to the story! Such an emotionally charged song and one of my favorites.
A Night Weâll Never Forget-
The way this song starts off is so good. Everyone is excited about senior prom and even more so about leaving the school. And Chris is preparing to get her revenge on Carrie. This is a good song all in all.
You Shine-
This is a good but forgettable song tbh
Why Not Me?-
Carrie is ready for the prom but she has limited social skills because of all the bullying sheâs gone through. Carrie is ready for her turn and Iâm so happy. It kinda reminds me of âRoseâs turnâ from Gypsy but for teens.
Stay Here Instead-Â
This song has a good sound and Carrieâs mother is pleading with her to stay home. It reminds me of âMother Knows Bestâ from Tangled, but less effective.
When Thereâs No One-
This song is good and it gives us more insight into why Carrieâs mother is so over protective. Sheâs very lonely and there is a certain level of vulnerability within the performance of this song as well.
Prom Arrival-
The harmonies in this song are great! People are all so happy and ready to have fun, Carrie is nervous and the song cools down when Carrie arrives. It is sweet how much people appreciate her now but we know what happens soon :/
Unsuspecting Hearts (Reprise)-
Carrie has a moment with Miss Gardner and it is sweet.
Dreamer in Disguise (Reprise)-
Tommy is dancing with Carrie, and in the background Chris is watching and waiting. It is still in a nice moment, not much to say about it.
Prom Climax-
The start of this song is exciting and catchy but it is ominous, Chris and Billie are in the background ready.
Alma Mater-
Sue warns Miss Gardner but she wonât listen and then Chris and Billie spill the blood.Â
The Destruction-
âThe curse of blood!â HOO BOY this song is intense and it is full of Carrie singing lyrics again but they all have a new meaning because she is finally getting her revenge. We can hear the screams of all the students and it feels very real and final. Police sirens in the distance wailing at the end, who knew so much could happen in a <3:00 song.
Carrie (Reprise)-
This time Carrieâs mother sings the song, and it has a new meaning within that. It is much more sad and much less aggressive than before. The song takes on a somber tone as well.
Epilogue-
âWhat does it cost to be kind?â
Carrie didnât deserve anything that happened to her and Iâve always felt much more sympathetic for her than any other character. That being said- donât go burning down schools if you are bullied.Â
All in all. I like this musical. It isnât full of fool proof bops or anything but it has a brilliant story (partly thanks to Stephen King) and a brilliant score so Iâd definitely recommend a listen. Each of the cast does well in their respective roles and so Iâd give it two thumbs up.Â
6.5/10

Hi!
Hello, Iâm Tristan and this is my musical theater side blog! I love musicals and I am very passionate about them :) My favorites include Company and Evita. Iâve been creeping on the tumblr musical community for a while and my push to jump in was the fact that i donât listen to nearly enough musicals, so I feel kinda left out.
I really hope to make more friends within the theatre community and to be able to experience more and just derive joy from blogging about things I like!
My main is @patheticmagneticÂ
I am going to try to listen to a new cast album everyday and write about it on here, pretty much just because I was inspired by the movie Julie and Julia. Itâll help me get out of my comfort zone, give me structure in my schedule, help my writing get better and itâll be a fun way to voice my opinion about things I love!
Please, please, please hit me up with suggestions for musicals to listen to! Anyâll do!
