guys I'm very high but I learned today that there was a study to determine if praying mantises could see in 3D (they can) and in order to figure this out the scientists made tiny 3d glasses to put on the mantis before showing it a movie of 'prey' moving across the screen. you can read more about it here but pleas look at th e tiny 3d glasses

Look at the SNOUT on this feller. I've never seen a weevil like this--if you'd like to try to ID them, you can, if not, no worries! Found in Western NC, USA :)
GET A LOAD OF THAT SNOUT. 10/10. This large yellow fellow is a rhubarb weevil :)

the term "phasmid," meaning "stick insect," comes from a latin word meaning "apparition" or "phantom," due to the creatures' ability to hide in plain sight, and then move around and scare people.
the largest phasmids likely remain undiscovered; the longest insect known to science was a phasmid from a species that remains formally unnamed and undescribed, even since being captured for the first time in china in 2014.
a female specimen of the quasi-mythical australian species of gargantuan stick insect was sought by a curator of museum victoria for three years before he encountered one, also in 2014. upon realizing what it was, he says, “I started screaming."

Eulimnadia astraova clam shrimp and eggs. The species name literally means "star egg". So far they are known only from scattered parts of Louisiana and Florida in USA.

carpenter bees can be such a pain in the ass to get close to that finding one that's dying, dead or just plain sleepy is always a big event. this male Xylocopa violacea was very feisty, but he wasn't using his wings at all so i got a nice look at all their fancy colors that are usually not visible when they're furiously beating to keep a large loud cylinder afloat in the air
