I'm curious, which thing did I do: write stereotypes of Italian Americans or steal headcanons of your Italian-American muse.

I love how you're spreading this narrative that I'm exclusively writing stereotypes of Italian-Americans just because I write Sal as a gangster. Sal, like many young, impoverished men in American cities, simply became affiliated with criminal life because of a lack of opportunities and chances. As a major fan of series such as The Sopranos (and with mafia affiliated NPCs in Jessica's life, such as Stevie and the D'Ambrosio family) you should know the reasons why some men fall into a life of crime. Also, as a long time follower of mine, you should know that he was not consistently depicted as a gangster in particular verses such as his modern, millennial verse. But, even if Sal was a oc riddled with stereotypes when I first began writing him, that certainly did not stop you from following me on each new blog you made, threading with me, worldbuilding with me or openly telling me how much you enjoyed my portrayal of him. I guess that would make you an enabler of stereotypes. 🤷🏾‍♀️

If you're writing a character from a specific ethnic group, then do not simply rely on the media portrayal of said ethnic character / group since it is grossly inaccurate nine times of out of ten.

Believe it or not but I use to imagine Eve, prior to deciding her grandma was a big-time gangster, prior to having Lynn as an FC, worked at a corner store while her grandfather was critically ill. It didn't bring in a lot of money, it was dangerous because low lives would always walk in ( which caused her to interact with some undesirables like Sal ) but she went there daily. It was when I developed a better image of Eve - and deciding her grandparents were notable community figures - when I decided to totally scrap the concept. There was no damn way Eve was working at a place like this. Amos just wouldn't allow it, and she would cry at the idea of it.

Originally Sal totally ditched Eve to focus on his crime career when she was pregnant with Cassandra. He didn't know she was pregnant, he just didn't want to maintain any personal ties with anyone. He had to focus on him, honey. 🙄💅🏾 This situation would be terribly devastating for Eve because she didn't know why Sal would do such a thing. Eventually, Eve would enter a relationship with a doctor who was willing to be a father to Cassandra. When Sal came back to Eve's doorstep, she reluctantly let him back into her life and that humble doctor left. You could say that Eve's first incarnation was terribly stupid, because it wasn't like Sal pressured her. She just had strong remaining feelings for that white man.

When it comes to Eve's parents, my original thought was that her mother was born to Amos & Liza. Her name was also Ruth (after an old Bioshock OC who was like a prototype Eve). While her father was born to a different set of parents. He took on the surname Littlejohn because he respected the family he was marrying into. While this wasn't a bad idea, I just didn't like it because I couldn't really imagine anything interesting about her parents beyond a few unremarkable facts. So, I switched things around - Eve's dad was born to Liza & Amos, Eve's mom came from another family. I could envision things much better for the both of them. If I recall correctly, my first thought with Eve's conception (because she didn't always come from a criminal family) was that her mother died during childbirth and her father, unwilling to raise Eve on his own left the state. Another big concept I had in mind at this point was that Eve's dad did decide to meet her at one point. He was driving to New York one rainy day and his car was swept off the road. This would cause Eve to develop a severe fear of heavy rainfall. Eve still possesses this fear - but that's mostly because she always thinks of the worst case scenario with rain.

Originally, Eve's grandfather was meant to be way more controlling and abusive with her. While Amos is still toxic and suffocating, it does come from a genuine place of love and fear of bad things happening to her when he's gone. Also, in the beginning, Eve didn't come from a crime family. Amos was still a barber, but they were lower-class. I envisioned her to dress more average (until marrying Sal) simply because she didn't have the funds to look like the pretty women on television. This is really reflected through her first (young/alt fc)

While Eve & Sal's mutual youthful brokeness does reflect that they grew to be wealthy together, I thought Eve would ultimately be more interesting if her family was involved in black organized crime. I also like Eve having been thoroughly spoiled as a kid because it's really not a common enough depiction with black girls. Especially for black girls in the era she grew up in.

Imagine if you will, it’s mid-November. Eve has not yet began Christmas shopping, instead she is in the browsing stage. Accompanied with her is Bianca who is not even eight years old yet. Hand in hand, the mother and daughter are in matching from the coats all the way down to the boots on their feet. Together, the mother and daughter have a type of ‘presence.’ It’s not exactly vintage, but it is chic, it is adorable and they manage to stand out in the crowded, icy street.

This is how a (children’s) model scout first noticed Bianca, asking Eve if she would be interested in having her daughter model some upcoming December fashions.

Eve’s first reaction? An instant no. It was a result of her being over-protective and assuming the worst of the situation. However, Bianca thought the idea of modeling sounded fun. One of her greatest passions at this point in her young life revolved around watching her mother prepare herself for eventful outings. After so long, Eve did consider how the additional money would be nice for the holidays, so she gave the agent a call back.

But even so, Eve would be at every photoshoot of Bianca’s. Watching like a hawk. If she saw anything she deemed the slightest bit inappropriate, they would be gone. As a child, Bianca only models for two years. This is because Eve felt all children who worked as models were overworked, weren’t attentive to school, and like adults these children still had to look a certain ‘perfect’ way. Eve didn’t want Bianca to develop any sort of unhealthy relationship with her body or to stray away from school. She wasn’t even ten years old yet.

Eve was also very open about this with Bianca. She explained that modeling didn’t have to be her career: Bianca didn’t know what she was truly passionate about yet, so it was best to stay in school, educate herself, and develop more interests that way. 

Eve told Bianca, don’t become a woman who relies on her beauty. Women like that are dependent on their husbands, whether they realize it or not.

Little did Bianca know, Eve was lowkey talking about herself.

This has been on my mind for awhile, but I feel like Eve and Sal’s development as a pair has reached a full circle. 

When I first started out on @sepiacasket (and may this blog rest in peace) Sal and the oc formerly known as Delores were a long time separated pair. Specifically, Eve took his kids and ran off. Then when I tried to write a novel about this event, I kept changing and questioning the realism of things. For one reason or another, it led me to go: ‘what if they stayed together despite their conflict? At least for rp things.’

Flashforward to 2021 and I’m making it canon that Eve and Sal do split for two in a half years because I just thought it would be interesting for plotting and character development, too. 

I realized that their separation seems natural this time around because although these two characters balance each other out ( Sal is extroverted, Eve brings stability ) Sal can be too much and Eve had to back away. Just for awhile. She recognized their relationship was dangerous - she recognized this was still a man she cared about - but she needed peace of mind. And unlike my original concept, Eve stays in New York. She and Sal continue interacting the entire time they’re apart.

I didn’t expect that I would bring around an old, previous concept but I did, and its working better.

ngl while i do get discouraged doing anything and compliments really go a long way, i’m also very uncomfortable receiving compliments. as in, i feel scared to read them sometimes. it’s been a long term problem i’ve had. it’s like i think they’re actually coded threats in disguise. anybody else have this problem?
