Deer Scent the How To Lure

Most hunters greatly misinterpret what deer attractants are designed to do. The primary role of deer scent is to attract deer from a reasonable distance to a scrape, dripper, mock scrape, or to lead them to follow the scent trail that you have laid. When applied strategically, the attractant will help in positioning the deer in the right place at the tight time for you to execute a perfect shot.
You need to remember however that the buck of a lifetime will not appear just because you are using a lure. The deer attractant is only but one piece of the puzzle. You must bring all the pieces together to succeed. You need to be able to read deer signs such as scrapes, trails, feeding areas, rubs and bedding areas. Additionally, you have to be able to use wind to your advantage. Scout your particular area of interest without leaving human odors; omit human odors from your clothing and body. I can’t stress this enough; success in hunting starts with a hunter. You must first eliminate as many foreign and human odors as possible before leaving the house to minimize interference and increase the efficiency of the deer lures.
Here are quick tips to help you with this; Bath or shower using scent eliminating agents Wash hunting clothing (gloves, hats, socks etc.) with scent eliminating agents Clean and spray your hunting tools with scent eliminators (be sure to include your fannie packs, boots, tree stand, seats, etc.) Be meticulously careful with the gun lubricants and oils used on your weapons. As much as possible, use unscented lubricants and oils free of chemical odors. Use rubber-soled boots for hunting Use rubber gloves to handle dispensers, scents, drag rags, etc. Don’t chew or smoke in your stand Use natural camouflage in your stand If you must move, make slow careful movements. Use lures, scents and cover scents correctly. Do not overuse or contaminate. Properly seal and store them.
Never apply scents to your body directly; otherwise this will draw attention to you. Carry your urine bottle don’t urinate from your stand. Using Doe and Buck urine Deer lure It is very critical that you use the right deer attractant for the right phase of the rut that you are hunting. This means you will need to understand a bit of their mating cycles and natural behaviors. Here is a quick preview of which deer scent you should use and when. Doe Urine: Basic urine from a doe is effective throughout the season, but best in the earliest weeks before the rut. At this stage, bucks are not super competitive and still moving around in bachelor groups. Doe urine will reassure deer whenever they pass through an area that all is well. You will find it much easier to hunt a relaxed deer than the one on the edge.
It serves pretty much the same purpose throughout the season and attracts curious deer to a trail dragged with the scent. As the rut phase recedes and deer falls back into their feeding patterns, doe urine still remains the natural solid go-to scent. Doe Estrous: This higher-dollar estrous scent had better be reserved until you get within two weeks of the peak of the rut. When you notice increased activity with bucks chasing tail-wagging does around, apply the scent around your best stand. Use it both into your stand, on a drag and in the area around your setup to act as a cover and as an attractant. Keep using this throughout the key phases of the rut, until you notice the rutting urge begin to recede, then you use it for a few more days. Buck urine: this is probably the most misunderstood deer scent in the industry.
Buck Urine (non-rut); this is another perfect all season curiosity lure as bucks will always check out for any new buck in the hood to determine its age and dominance. In early rutting season, bucks will travel together in bachelor groups and will investigate any new buck unrecognized to them. In Pre Rut, they will once again investigate to check for any potential competition. And during Rut, it goes without saying; the slightest whiff of any kind of a new buck will set them off. When hunting a scrape, buck urine will often refresh the scrape to mimic the presence of another buck in the area. Buck in Rut Urine (Dominate Buck Urine): This is to be best used during pre-rut and Rut to draw in dominant bucks in readiness for a fight.
Spray the Buck in Rut Urine on brushes/bushes or on ground within your shooting range. Do not apply any on your equipment or yourself, you want him to be looking on the ground for another buck, not staring at you sitting up in a tree. Tarsal Gland: Fuel both the sexual drive and rage of the big boys by applying a little tarsal scent from a buck. You can combine this with the doe is estrous scent. Drip both of them in mock scrapes or mud-worn trails and stay alert. Both work best on a drag, and can be used throughout the rut peak. A few more bonus tips
Be realistic:
Do not expect to hang out deer scents and watch as deer immediately come running to check them out. The basic idea of using deer lures is to get the deer just walking by to stop long enough and check it out, as it gives you a better clear chance for a clean shot.
youtube
Use wicks: cotton balls and plastic canisters work pretty fine, but they also have a tendency of altering the scents when mixed with whichever material the canisters are made of. Wicks are made specifically for the job. Minimize Scent Locations: All you need are two wicks, one to the right, and another one to the left. If it makes you feel any better, hang one wick directly in front of you as well. Do not hang behind or in spots that you won’t be able to make a shot. Keep in Range: You do not also want to hang your wicks beyond your clear hooting range. Place then adjacent to likely travel roots or shooting lanes within the shooting distance of your stand.

Turkey Calls
Using a turkey call on your wild turkey hunt can prove to be challenging but also can be very rewarding. The two main purposes of using a turkey call during your hunt are to allow you to locate the birds as well as communicate with them. The better you are with calling, the more successful you will be.Below you will find the different types of turkey calls and a brief description of each one.
Hopefully you will be able to use this as a short guide for types of turkey calls, how to use them, and what type of calls you can make with them. With so many different types of wild turkey calls on the market, a turkey hunter should try to become proficient on as many of them as possible. Proper technique and skill are keys to creating the correct call.
A wild turkey hunter will have a definite advantage if they know the different calls, how to make them, and when to use them. A serious hunter working a turkey call wants to engage a wild turkey in calling back. The best way to do that is to make calls that sound like they are coming from another turkey – not a hunter. Another important aspect of turkey calling is knowing what call to make in the appropriate situation. (ex. When the turkeys are in their roost, this is when you use soft clucks and/or yelps which indicates contentment from other birds and the gobbler is more likely to descend from his roost.)Just Turkey Hunting offers some of the top brand names in the industry, H S Strut or Hunters Specialties, Knight & Hale, Primos, M.A.D, Flextone, Quaker Boy and many others! Just Turkey Hunting and the Outdoor Shopping Network also carry some of the best custom made turkey calls in the country.
BOX CALL
If you need to call turkeys that are located a long distance from you, the Box Call is the one to use. It is capable of producing a louder call than any other type of turkey call. It is a rectangular box, open at the top, and sounds are made by the friction created by sliding the lid/paddle across the surface of the box. Chalk is applied to the paddle and the thin edges of the box to increase friction and add a more raspy sound to the call. Box Calls are excellent and may be mostly used for great yelps, but also can produce soft clucks, purrs, cutting, and even gobbles. Another technique with the Box Call is to secure the paddle with a rubber band and then shake the box to produce a realistic gobble.

The Box Call is very versatile, but there is one drawback to using this call. Because the basics for using this call are wood and chalk for the producing the sound in the friction process, wet weather can hinder your efforts. Since the Box Call is not the best option in wet weather, you want to consider using the air calls, like the Mouth Call, Tube Call, Wingbone Call, Tube Call, and/or a Friction Call specifically made for all-weather use.
FRICTION CALL
Friction Calls are very popular among wild turkey hunters. They are generally round (but different shapes are available) and can vary in size. Under the Friction Call category – you can find a Slate Friction Call, Glass/Aluminum Friction Call and Scratch Box Friction Call. Usually you will find these materials secured in a pot by silicone. The pot serves as the sound chamber because it is hollow and will have holes cut out of the bottom from which the sound will escape. Friction Calls use a striker/peg - held at an angle - and most often in a circular motion. The wild turkey hunter draws the striker across the slate/glass to create yelps, purrs, clucks and cutting calls. This call can be one of the easier ones on which to learn turkey calling and a new turkey hunter may want to try this one first.
Once the hunter has become skilled on this call, it is easy to create very realistic wild turkey sounds. The striker you choose will help to determine the sounds that you can create. Strikers can be made of woods and synthetics and come in varying lengths, densities, and widths. Generally, a thinner striker made from a hardwood will give you high-pitched sounds while using softer woods provides low, softer sounds. Acrylic, aluminum, and carbon tips are often used for all-weather purposes on Friction Calls – making this call effective in any weather condition. Mountainside Game Calls has an exclusive all-weather tip on their wooden striker that works great in any weather.
Given the variety of strikers available that produce a variety of sounds, you may want to carry several different ones on all of your wild turkey hunts. You can easily carry several strikers and you then have the option of calling different sounds as various situations occur. Also, when you are hunting, make sure to carry Scotchbright, sandpaper, or some material to rough up the striker tip and the call surface from time to time. A long day of hunting without touching up the surface may cause a squeak or squeal which may spook the turkey.Push-Pull or Plunger-style Calls are also other examples of Friction Calls and can be the easiest to operate.
PUSH-PULL CALL or PLUNGER CALL
Push-Pull/Plunger Calls use a spring and plunger to move a peg across a small slate piece in a small, rectangular box. These are the simplest of the wild turkey calls to use and easily create realistic turkey sounds. The advantages of using a Push-Pull Call are the ease of use as well as needing very little movement to employ them. Some hunters attach them to the fore-end of their shotgun to use when the gobbler is close. Again, allowing you to produce the sound with very little motion – when the turkey could see you.
TUBE CALL
Tube Calls can be made from wood or synthetic materials. A piece of latex rubber is stretched across the open end of the tube covering approximately half of the opening. It is secured with rubber bands. The open part of the tube with latex should be turned downward. Place the edge of the latex against the bottom lip and blow to produce yelps, cutting, purrs, clucks and gobbles. One advantage of a Tube Call is the pitch that it creates can be heard a long distance. Therefore you can use it as a locator call. Another advantage is that this call is not used as much as other calls. This means that even the call-shy wild turkeys are easily fooled by a Tube Call because they don’t hear them as often. Lastly, this call will work in any weather with little to no effect from wind, rain, cold, or heat.A disadvantage to a Tube Call would be the movement that it takes to put the call in your mouth. You do have the option of hiding the call under your face net. With this in mind, try to set up so you have some cover to help camouflage your movement.
WINGBONE CALL
Wingbone Calls originally were made from the wingbones of a turkey, and some still are. The wild turkey hunter will hang them around their neck for making very distinctive sounds, but are rarely heard in the woods anymore. This can be a difficult call to master- so practice is definitely a must for proper technique - before using this on your wild turkey hunt. For that reason, if you can master this call, you will have the advantage of making the soft hollow yelps that most other hunters cannot. The Wingbone Call is a suction-type call. The small tip is placed on the lips and a sucking motion or a "kissing" effect is used. Sounds are made with quick, forceful sucking motions. Quality Wingbone Calls with a skilled caller will produce a very distinctive and sweet-sounding soft yelp.
LOCATOR CALL
Locators Calls have a main purpose of making a sound that will prompt the Gobblers to gobble back at the wild turkey hunter. When you hear their gobbles, you can then determine their location. There are different Locator Calls such as a Crow Call and an Owl Call. Using these calls will generally alarm the wild turkeys which can elicit a response from them. A turkey call, such as a Tube Call, can also be used as a Locator Call. When toms hear a Locator Call, they usually respond with a shock gobble. Once you get them to respond to a Locator Call and you know their location, you can begin to determine your strategy for filling your wild turkey hunting tag.
MOUTH CALL or DIAPHRAGM CALL
Last but not least, there is the Mouth Turkey Call. Some people also call it a Diaphragm Call. It is a small horseshoe shaped call made of composite, aluminum, or other material with a latex insert. This call is made to fit into the roof of your mouth. The Mouth Call is difficult to master, but once you have it, you can succeed in producing the most life-like turkey sounds possible from any call. With the different models and types of reeds in these calls, you can make an endless variety of sounds. Besides being able to create such real sounding turkey calls, you can accomplish this without movement. Given the keen eyesight of the wild turkey, the value of the ability to call with no visible movement should not be underestimated. The biggest advantage to this is that you can continue to call to the turkey – even as they get close.

The hunter can have complete focus on the gobbler and watching him react to the call - if he is close. You can also pair the Mouth Call with another hand-held turkey call. Using this strategy is very effective. It will broaden your turkey sound options which will likely keep the turkey engaged in communication for a longer period of time and get him into shooting range. Mouth calls also keep your hands free which allows you to concentrate on the target while keeping your weapon ready instantly for a shot.
The Mouth Turkey Call requires continuous practice to maintain effective, realistic call sounds. You can get loud, high-pitched calls from this instrument. It is an excellent call in wet and/or windy weather unlike other popular calls like the Box Call. The ability to use a wide range of calls is important. If you are a serious turkey hunter, learning to use a variety of calls will greatly increase your odds of being successful. If you want to be an outstanding turkey caller, practice until you get it right.
Practice each type of turkey call until it’s second nature to produce quality sounds. It is far better to be efficient with three or four different turkey calls than to produce fair quality calling with many. It also helps to be proficient in several calls so you can carry different turkey calls with you during your hunt. Being able to make different sounds from a variety of calls will allow you to engage the wild turkey, keep him interested by changing up the calls, and gives you the ability to create calls that are necessary in certain situations.
American wild turkey species have the same language. It usually consists of 28 calls, each with their own purpose and message. Below are the primary vocals that hens and gobblers make throughout the year. Knowing these different turkey sounds will help you when deciding which call to make on your turkey call.
Cackle
Hens cackle in a multiple series of notes when going into or coming out of their roosts. Cackles are usually fast with an irregular rhythm and can include both clucks and yelps.
When you hear cackles, you then generally hear clucks as the turkeys are on the ground searching for each other. Cluck Soft, one syllable sound used by gobblers and hens. Wild turkeys use this sound to communicate at short distances and usually at dawn/first light.
Cut/Cutting
This is a sharper and harder cluck. It has a fast and broken rhythm. Hens will cut when they are searching for other turkeys, agitated, or excited. Cutting is usually loud and aggressive, and heard most often during spring.
Gobble

A gobbler’s primarily objective is to attract hens in the spring and you will hear them gobble for the hens.
They also gobble to show dominance over other males. A typical gobble is loud and aggressive and very short. Gobbles are also used by males to keep tabs on one another. While the mature gobblers are experienced in gobbling, the jakes are less-skilled and you will often hear weird combinations of gobbles and yelps. Kee-kee This is a soft, high-pitched, 3 or 4 note whistle sound.
Kee-kees are generally used by young turkeys that have been separated from their flock. Hens and other members of the flock will respond with yelps. Jakes most often kee-kee in the fall but will also do it into the spring. The kee-kee run, a variation of the kee-kee, combines whistles and lost yelps.Purr Although there are many different types of purrs, the one heard most often usually indicates that the turkeys are content.

Generally this is when they are feeding and close together in a group. The feeding purr is great to use on a call to lure the bird in during your turkey hunt. Spit and drum The spit and drum is simply a two-note sound originating from deep within gobbler’s chest. A gobbler spits and drums in the spring to attract hens.
It is not unusual to hear drumming up to 100 yards away.Tree Yelp A softer, shorter version of the basic yelp. Usually heard from turkeys in the morning from their roosts to indicate their location, they are awake, and all is safe with them.
Yelp
This is the most commonly heard sound from wild turkeys to locate other turkeys. Different types include :
excited yelp
assembly yelp
plain yelp
the tree yelp
the gobbler yelp.
Gobbler yelps are slower and often deeper-throated than hen yelps. These are used for several reasons like saying hello, as well as the mother hen assembling her young.Learning the different wild turkey sounds and how to distinguish them in the woods – would be beneficial to all turkey callers. When the turkey hunter hears the sound the bird is making, you then know which call to respond with to get their attention. This is just another tactic to use when hunting for turkey – to bag a bird!To listen to each of the Wild Turkey Sounds, go to the NWTF website link, "http://www.nwtf.org/all_about_turkeys/calling_tips.html"
