Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.

gilana! since you're kinda on the topic already, do you have any advice for socializing kittens? i'm planning to foster some soon (looks like a bonded pair and possibly a third from the same blended litter) and i want to set them up for success. i don't currently have any other pets but i do have friends with other cats and dogs of a couple different breeds who would be willing to bring those animals over for supervised visits if that helps with specifics
oh i love this topic!! i am NOT an expert on this subject by any means (i was a dog trainer and have only socialized one kitten as an adult), so i'm speaking as an enthusiastic amateur here)
interestingly i recently picked up a copy of Kitty Kindergarten by Sophia Yin on this topic. i'm still waiting for an external DVD drive to get here so i can't speak to its value yet, but it's only $12.49 and might be relevant to your interests?
Dr. Yin's company also offers an online course by the same name here
my big socialization focuses if i ever have kittens (🥺) would probably be:
body handling/grooming
carrier time, confinement, and travel
positive interactions with strange humans
vet interactions
introduction to novel sights/objects
desensitization to loud noises
in approximately that order of importance?
in my case, because i'm interested in therapy cats and possibly show cats, i'd also like to get them used to going into novel public spaces in general
even little things can really add up imo, like feeding them their meals in a carrier (let the kitten enter on their own terms, possibly start with the bowl right inside the lip of the crate and progressively inch it backwards until the kitten is fully entering and staying in of their own accord)
when you're holding/playing with the babies, maybe take a second to practice handling their feeties, or their ears, or looking at their little teethies before going back to normal affection – make these familiar, not just a scary thing that happens when they go to the vet or need medication
maybe also practice gently restraining them the way you might if you were clipping their claws?
vets will often allow you to make time for "happy visits" where you bring your animal to the vet and they have purely good experiences, so they don't associate going to the vet with always being uncomfortable or scared
you can also find playlists of sounds for puppy socialization like these two in addition to maybe working on some typical household sounds (like running a vacuum cleaner at a fair distance so it's not overwhelming)
with socializing any animal, the goal will always be to go slowly and never overwhelm the animal. you want the experiences to be as positive as possible, not just neutral
i definitely think meeting a lot of human friends who will be appropriate with the kittens and help them get used to being handled by different people is a great idea. an introduction to cat-friendly dogs could be useful, too!
i personally might avoid interactions with strange cats – they will have some socialization from mom/littermates and it minimizes the chance of transmissible illness (plus many adult cats might be distressed by the transport process). just my first thought though
@followthebluebell is my go-to experienced cat mutual so he may be willing to share thoughts as well?
this is pulled directly out of my ass so i hope it's at least a little helpful!

Are you in any of these countries?
If not, maybe you have followers who are?
The Gender Census releases all data collected every year so that people can process data about gender-divergent people in their home countries. However, when a country has less than 10 participants we redact the country information for their safety. These countries are all very close to having usable public data!
If you live in one of these countries and your gender is in a blender, please do take our survey. It takes 5-6 minutes, it doesn't collect any identifying information or ask any intrusive/personal questions, and it helps a lot. We have over 38,000 participants so far.
Take the 2025 Gender Census survey here!

An idiot robin has built a nest on top of our garage door motor. The nest was constructed so the chain that drives the door is actually a part of the nest, and if we open or close the garage door, the whole thing is going to get torn apart. So I guess the garage door is staying open for as long as it takes for these eggs to hatch and these birds to leave the nest.
My wife has set up a camera to continuously monitor the situation.
Wife: Maybe we should set up some padding beneath where they'll fall out of the nest? Normally they fall onto grass, not concrete. Me: Seems like we're really coddling these birds. Wife: Well, yeah. Me: I just don't want you to get invested. Wife: Way, way too late for that. I'm all in.
So we're keeping the garage door open for a few weeks, I guess. Whenever I go to use the car, the robin flies away from the nest and watches me cautiously to see whether I'm going to kill her babies, and I can't help but find that a little bit rude of her.
