Not to be like woe is me for liking a fictional character but it baffles me how ‘no nuance’ people are about him when almost everyone else doesn’t get that treatment (Rip Bob and every female character but Cherry - and Cherry is getting more of a pedestal than nuance)

haven't been on here in a hot minute but i posted a big rant on my spam instagram about the outsiders fandom but only like 3 of my irls are actually into the outsiders so i need to post it here because oh my fucking god.

maybe i am overreacting, but there are just some (a lot) of outsiders fans the rub me the wrong way (mostly in the musical fandom) and the content the musical posts doesn't help.

like there seems to be a BIG pro-soc fanbase out there. i've heard people say that "bob isn't the villain, dally is" babe no it's the social-economic divide. neither of them are good people. that's the point.

you are allowed to dislike a character but please don't act like they're the anti christ especially when you like AND DEFEND a character that is also a terrible person.

and then posts like this (there isn't anything inherently wrong with it. they post comedic things that's fine this is funny) where the fandom then takes it as an opportunity to call dally lazy (again, could be overreacting. i know a lot of them are just joking about it cuz the post is but still) when dally has faced oppression his whole life and has never had a stable place to live. what's the point of getting a job if he's just gonna run off again? yknow? and ESPECIALLY in the context of the musical where he is a BLACK MAN IN THE 1960S. IN THE SOUTH!!!!!

and then this??? (under this post on instagram)

i know the musical account will respond "in character" in support of whatever side the comment is supporting but as fans can we please be smart like what?? he tried to KILL a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD BOY because he spoke to his girlfriend?????

and i know the lyric is "CHERRY what you did that night was wrong" NOT pony so idk if this commenter is just a little stupid or said this on purpose trying to blame ponyboy.... a fourteen year old boy.... with a crush..., for the death of the man that tried to KILL HIM

AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON JUSTICE FOR TULSA

it just feels like people ignore the actual meaning behind it

greasers are beat up and dying daily and nobody bats an eye. that's normal to them. but the second a soc dies, the town erupts.

in the musical, the cop interrogates characters during the first part of the song. with socs, he keeps a respectful distance. with greasers, he's shoving the flashlight in their faces and shining it directly in their eyes. two bit is beat up and USED AS AN ASH TRAY!! A CIGARETTE IS PUT OUT ON HIS BARE SKIN!!!! HE SCREAMS IN AGONY!!! THIS IS AN ACTUAL THING THAT HAPPENS IN THE MUSICAL!!!

fans reeaaallly love to take the song at face value and only listen to the lyrics and not pay attention to context. the point is that a soc died, and the socs get worse. none of them realize it's consequences for their actions EXCEPT for cherry, yet paul's lyrics are the ones always quoted!!! it's always "bob was not a jealous man, cherry what you did that night was wrong" and never "you couldn't stand to leave those boys alone" or "he lived his life scared to death after what you put him through"

it's like the fans are allergic to media literacy. but as long as tulsa gets justice, am i right?

not to mention that, baby... bob clearly was a jealous man... and that's the point of the line....

he's "king of the west side socs." they idolize him over there. of COURSE they don't think he's hotheaded and jealous. yet for some reason, the soc fans LOVEEEE to believe that line is true. like hi!!!! ever heard of an unreliable narrator???

like the point is that the socs will do anything to defend him. which includes overlooking the fact that attempting to ACTUALLY KILL a CHILD is wrong????

and dare i say part of this misunderstanding comes from removing randy as a character in the broadway musical. the only other reasonable soc with more than three lines besides cherry?

cherry was never violent, but randy was. because bob was his best friend. randy was there when bob tried to kill ponyboy, then johnny killed bob IN SELF DEFENSE and it hit randy. he knew all along none of what he was doing was good, but he didn't have the guts to say it until he finally faced the consequences.

randy was in the la jolla production before the musical moved to broadway and he was SUCH an important character.

bob and paul are the socs who saw violence as an answer and outlet.

cherry is the soc that never saw the point in violence.

randy is the soc who CHANGED. and that is such an important key to understanding the story that the musical fans miss.
