I’M IN THE BIBLE

I am mentioned in the bible..... so you know it’s kind of a big deal. I am the greatest Roman Emperor of all time

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

I’m well known for my legacy of peace of 200 years, but it came at a great cost in a huge war where my naval fleet fought to victory.

Family

Julius Caesar was my dad and Nero was my great-great grandfather, so you could say my family is kind of important.

Oh great Augustus please answer my question; what about your family relationships? Some people says that the imperial family is divided, is that true? Thanks

Salve, my child.Family is very important to me, as first citizen I have to be an example to all of the value of a harmonious family. Like any family we too have our disagreements, and there are those who are prone to gossip who believe that discord within my family can have political consequences. They may be right when Marcus Antonius chose to take up with that Egyptian temptress spurning his lawful wife, my sister, the consequences for the republic were most grave. That matter aside the disagreements in my household are insignificant, and my word as Paterfamilias is law and has kept us together, I can only wish to be succeeded by a strong paterfamilias who will guide both my family and the state through hard times.

I have tried through my laws to preserve the traditional Roman family for everyone and for posterity, but my own daughter, Julia, flaunted all of my laws and made a great fool of me. My grandson Agrippa and granddaughter Julia too have suffered exile as their mother for their misdeeds against me and my family. it has been a heavy burden upon me, but their betrayal of my trust was a threat to the state, and as it’s guardian I had to punish them. 

I have both been blessed by good fortune for the family I have, but cruelly suffered as fate has also taken much of my family away. I can only hope now that I have brought harmony to my family and that my son Tiberius will managed to keep the family together upon my passing.

PS I would recommend the excellent BBC classic miniseries I, Claudius for a dramatic accounting of my family, which while incorrect in many factual respects certainly nails the spirit of Imperial family life in the halls of power.

Marriage and Family

I’ve been married three times and have had and adopted 6 children. My first wife’s name was Clodia Pulchra,  I divorced her and married, Scribonia. Whom I also divorced and then married, Livia Drusilla, who I was married to until my death in 14 AD
