UUs have a different take on Christmas than the traditional Christian interpretation. For many of us, it’s a time of giving and a time to celebrate the importance of each life. Most UUs don’t recognise Jesus as a savior or a prophet, but as a person. A person born into poverty in a nation that oppressed his people. He taught and lived a life of service to marginalised people and sociopolitical resistance, and was executed by the state because of it. His teachings have lasted nearly two millennia and have been an inspiration for everything from volunteer groups to revolutions. All this from a person born in truly the most humble way. That is incredible and inspiring.

Blessed are you who bear the light in unbearable times, who testify to its endurance amid the unendurable, who bear witness to its persistence when everything seems in shadow and grief.
Blessed are you in whom the light lives, in whom the brightness blazes— your heart a chapel, an altar where in the deepest night can be seen the fire that shines forth in you in unaccountable faith, in stubborn hope, in love that illumines every broken thing it finds.

Spiritual Practice Challenge Day Two: Light a Candle
I bought this candle over the weekend from an amazing candle maker/social worker. This one was called "You Got This" and it's made with essential oils to promote stress relief. It's energizing and inspiring and I feel so blessed to spend time in its light.

Spiritual Practice Challenge Day One: Make Something
When I went to the admitted students day for my seminary, the admissions director told us to follow our fear. I wrote it down and didn’t think about it until I was getting a tarot reading yesterday. I was feeling kind of out of place in my program and was asking what I needed to feel more grounded and sure of myself in the program. The final card in the spread was The Moon. The person giving me the reading interpreted it as telling me to follow my fear. It reminded me why I am doing this even though it might be hard. Why I am here even when it’s scary. Because in the unknown, there is possibility. And I’m going to follow my fear all the way there.

I started grad school this week and realized I need some structured spiritual practice in my life. I’m going to spend the next 30 days intentionally setting aside a little bit of time for getting grounded. If you want to join me, tag #spiritual practice challenge so I can follow along!

Orientation -- the start of something
Today was my orientation for my MDiv program.
By around 3pm I was exhausted and so full of information and had no idea if I would actually need any of it so a friend and I ducked out and went to get coffee and sit outside.
We talked about how surreal it is to be actually doing this. How we were starting legacies in families where graduate education was either never thought of or never feasible to actually do. How we were figuring it out and figuring it out together.
I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I know I have friends for the journey. I know I have people investing in me for the long-haul. I know that I am not here by accident. I know this is a call and not a choice but I am choosing to answer.

Humans are adorable.
Supporting evidence:
1. Humans say ‘ow’, even if they haven’t actually been hurt. It’s just a thing they say when they think they might have been hurt, but aren’t sure yet.
2. Humans collect shiny things and decorate their bodies and nests with them. The shinier the better, although each individual has a unique taste for style and colouring
3. Humans are not an aquatic or even amphibious species, but they flock to bodies of water simply to play in it. They can’t even hold their breath all that long; they just love to splash!
4. When night falls and the sky goes dark, humans become drowsy and begin to cocoon themselves in soft, fluffy bedding.
5. Some humans spend time in each other’s nests! Just for fun! It’s not their nest; they’re just visiting each other.
6. Some humans use pigments and dyes to make their bodies flashy and colourful! They even attach shiny dangly bits to their cartalidgous membranes!
7. Humans are very clever, and sometimes adopt creatures from other species into their family units. They don’t seem to notice the obvious differences, and often raise them alongside their own young!
8. If a human sees another creature in distress, they can commonly be observed trying to help! Even at their own risk, most humans are deeply compassionate creatures!
9. If a human hears a particularity catchy sound or tune, it will often mimic it, even to the point of annoying themselves!
10. Sneezes are entirely involuntary, and completely adorable. Especially when the human in question becomes frustrated
11. Humans love treats!!! Some more than others. Many humans will save these treats specifically for a later date when they are in need of comfort or reassurance. IE, pickles, pop tarts, Popsicles, etc
12. They’re learning to travel in space!!! They can’t get very far, but they’re trying!!! So far, they’ve made it to the end of their yard, and have found rocks
