fascinating list of actual and theoretical reasons why so many people queer-code electric trains. It’s so widespread and it’s fascinating.

-have never strongly followed engine/coach or freight/passenger binaries that particularly conservative old people try to push. It becomes downright laughable with combine EMUs being a thing in the trolley era.

-often treated as a deviant modern thing due to their older history being obscured and erased. They have always been here, actually.

-strong association with liberal urban areas with higher gay populations. Their fanbase is actually disproportionately LGBT

-electricity seen as “weak” and almost “effeminate” vs combustion (this is cartoonishly wrong with trains which are uniquely OP among electric things)

-I think I’ve seen jokes about electricians being gay because “they’re always in closets”

-The AC/DC thing in Starlight Express is left field but hilarious and amazing

-“pansexual” is also funny in the context of pantographs often being called “pans” for short

-VERY long history with amusement parks which are notoriously a very gay interest

-Judy Garland and her trolley song

-delicate pantograph movements kind of resemble the “limp wristed” affect

I don’t know a lot about Electra and their components, but I’m like 80% sure they were all built together in my canon

THIS GIVES ME AN EXCUSE TO TALK ABOUT THE STARLIGHT YAY

In my memories, the Starlight was, yes, mostly Train God. But it’s a bit more than that, too- the Starlight also separates trains as living beings from hunks of mindless metal! The Starlight is basically what gives trains their souls, a train’s soul basically being a part of the Starlight- sorta like a sourdough starter, there’s no limit to how many pieces it can have yk? So when I say “I am the Starlight,” it’s less of “I am Train Jesus” and more of “I am a living being worthy of love and the pursuit of happiness” because I was feeling very. well. dehumanized? de-train-ized? You get the idea. The whole thought process behind it was that I was made of the same Starlight like all these other trains that think they’re better than me, so I should be able to race with them even if they try to stop me.

As for the Starlight Sequence, the Starlight didn’t appear to me as a physical train, rather just a disembodied voice that sounded like a cacophony of the voices of many trains I’ve looked up to in the past, mostly made up of Momma and Poppa. As for why I was meeting the Starlight- (death tw? ig)

When the engines beat the fuck out of me, I very nearly died, hence the meeting the Starlight part. I fully believe that if it hadn’t chosen to save me in that moment, I would’ve died for real on the side of those tracks. I’m not sure how it happened, but I just remember waking up alone after Starlight Sequence with my injuries healed enough to race. Pretty cool of the Starlight I think.

Anyways, sorry for the ramble- I’ve been wanting an excuse to talk about this for a while now

I was looking at the stex wiki the other day and it was discussing different interpretations of what the starlight express is and that made me really want to know what everyone thinks it is

Really cool discussion on how depending on the production, viewers might believe that it's just Poppa/Momma acting as the starlight or its actually like a godlike figure. In my opinion as someone who's never seen the show like in-person I think it's sort of both?

Obviously in the recordings you can tell that it's Poppa/Momma singing for the part of the Starlight but I've always kind of interpreted that as the Starlight appearing to Rusty in a form he would recognize. He's clearly closest to Poppa/Momma so I think that's what the Starlight chose to show itself as.

I feel this idea is futhred helped on by the fact that in the London revival, momma isn't just momma. If I'm correct she gets a new sort of jacket to wear that I think indicates that she's momma but different. So like a almost god-like version of Momma? Or the Starlights version of momma. Now this totally makes me wonder what the starlight would appear as to other people.
