All of the freight are aware that they’re victims of their society, and it’s really interesting how each of them cope differently

Dustin is aware that their society is against them, but has so much optimism in the systems’ “promises” of equality (his main line in the rap being “leaving out steam trains isn’t fair”).

Rusty’s faith in the system falters throughout the show, which also manifests in doubt in his religion.

Flat-Top is in a similar position to Rusty, where he’s frustrated with the system. While Rusty internalizes a lot of his frustration, Flat Top seeks to rebel against what he perceives as direct authority (poppa/momma), but winds up feeding into the systems that oppress him and his friends (aligning himself with GB and the diesels).

The Rockies sit at the opposite end of the spectrum. They’ve been beaten down by society so much that they just submit to the treatment, and encourage others to do the same.

CB (later Red Caboose) sits at a similar position to the Rockies, however, instead of accepting his fate, he disrupts society and does what he wants (crashing trains). The current version of the character adds the layer of Caboose exploiting his rebellion for profit.
