i have a youtube video about the use of jumpscares in horror games playing in the background while I work, and it reminded me of the single worst jumpscare i've ever experienced, which happened while I was playing a little game I like to call... Google Maps. (you play Google Maps by turning on street view, zooming in to somewhere that looks interesting, and clicking on any 360 photo views that people might have uploaded. i have spent many hours of my life playing Google Maps)

Anyway, spin this guy around to see something that legitimately made me jump so hard that I damn near threw my drink across the room

scarlet hollow has truly heightened my standards to an unsustainable degree on choices matter games and it's so fucked up lol

most "choices matter" games are like... "make these two big obvious decisions and you'll get a different ending based on what you pick" which like, yeah sure! that is what it means when choices matter! perfectly acceptable!

but then in scarlet hollow one of the first decisions you make in the opening scene is about whether or not to take a bag of boiled peanuts from a stranger on the bus, and that single interaction carries several possibilities to define aspects of your character and how they can interact with the world that WILL come up again MULTIPLE times

the chapters take years to come out, but it's because the devs are literally sitting there like "fuck, how could a person who is allergic to peanuts behave in a situation such as this. how do we give them two or three possible options specific to being allergic to peanuts" for every branching pathway, and i respect and fear them for that

i really admire everyone in the fl fandom who is so dedicated to playing in character. i made up personalities for all my little guys and then proceed to choose the options that are most interesting to me every single time. zero commitment to the bit. my nemesis character was the only one I've really kept in character and I had to fight with myself over the ambition ending choice because the one that wasn't in character felt more intriguing. F

the problem with being a fallen london fan is that suddenly you have ten pages of the wiki up for how to grind various objects and suddenly you have four different alts. this is a problem!
