Selfie with Uncle Ho! This statue is of Ho Chi Minh, or Uncle Ho, as he was lovingly called, in Ho Chi Minh City (though still often referred to by its earlier name of Saigon), the capital of Vietnam. It was installed (right in the middle of District 1, in a lovely square) as part of the birth centenary celebrations of the founder of unified Vietnam. The Sulabh International Museum of Toilets is a one-of-its-kind in India. It was conveived by Bindeshwar Pathak, who has worked for decades to promote environmental sanitation and liberation of manual scavengers. The museum traces the history of toilets and sanitation systems, startimg from that of the Indus Valley Civilisation, which had a highly advanced concept of sanitation, all those millennia ago (the city of Kalibangan being a prominent example). There are models of various toilets from different periods of history, from across the world. That's an ordinary house sparrow. Nothing special. It flew down one day into our office and fell dead; and that's how I found it. It might have done of natural causes, or might not. But it made me think of the current plight of the sparrow in cities. The familiar chirp of my childhood is definitely missing. I mostly see crows and pigeons now. And we humans are collectively responsible for the decline of these beautiful, tiny avians. According to scientists, sparrows are bio-indicators of an urban environment. And the decline of the sparrow is directly related to the wanton felling of trees and the vanishing of water bodies in cities. Yes, built spaces are essential, but so are trees and lakes, be they natural or man-made, and proper urban planning can ensure that. But that isn't happening in too many places. Environmentalists and other activists are trying though. Towards that end, March 20 was declared World Sparrow Day, and the day has played its part in creating awareness. Bihar and Delhi have made it their official state bird. Sparrows are a fairly adaptable spacies, and they have survived centuries, and have inspired poems and paintings. Quite the touristy photo - Angkor Wat at sunrise. But then, a memorable experience it was too. And people really crave for it, seeing the throng of foreign tourists jostling for a lakeside view even at such an early hour (in fact, a tiff continued for quite a while between an elderly couple and those behind them because they had decided to remain standing at the edge, when others were sitting, and thus blocking the view of the temple's reflection on the lake; though for me it made for some nice early morning entertainment!). Yes, the crowd did make for a less peaceful and quiet sunrise, but what the heck! The famous Amgkor Wat it was, after all. I had left by 4.30 am for the small tour bus to take us - a motley group of eight (from five countries) - along with our guide, to the place. Tickets are priced a bit high; part of the money though goes to a group of children's hospitals run by a charity. Sunrise at Angkor Wat was followed by visits to the temples of Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm. Anglor Wat, in fact, is just the most famous of a group of a few hundred temples, built by successive Hindu and Buddhist kings of the Khmer Empire over a period of about 600 years.
