Reblogging to add even more resources! You can support Hawaii and its people if you aren't visiting, as well! Some of the places I listed accept monetary donations, so please help them out if you can spare anything. Here are some more I'm adding:
‘Āina Momona is a Native Hawaiian-led non-profit community organization that promotes environmental health and Hawaiian sovereignty. There are petitions you can sign and you can donate money to them.
Donate to a food bank! Here are three to choose from; the Hawaii Food Bank serves Oahu and Kauai, the Maui Food Bank serves Maui County, and The Food Basket serves Hawaii County (the Big Island).
Also, you can donate to Hawaii Marine Animal Response, another non-profit that rescues Hawaii's native ocean animals!
Are you 🫵 pissed off about the Lilo and Stitch monstrosity remake? Do you want to know how you can actually make a difference in supporting the people and ecosystems of Hawaii?
Tourism is a big issue in Hawaii (which the remake got rid of the original's commentary on because it makes foreigners look bad). I'm not gonna promote it, BUT I know that realistically, thousands of people arrive here every single day by the airplane-ful. And the majority of them aren't educated on the socio-cultural and economic impacts of tourism. SO, I'm making this post in an effort to educate visitors. If you or someone you know is visiting or moving to Hawaii (whether by circumstances in or out of your control), here are some suggestions on how you can give back!
You can donate to the Hawaii Community Foundation, which has been instrumental in giving aid to the displaced community of Lahaina after the Maui wildfires in 2023. They also provide scholarships to students of under-represented communities.
If you're interested in visiting Kualoa Ranch, you can do their Mālama Experience where you get your hands dirty giving back to the ‘āina (land)!
There are other organizations you can join to volunteer with, too, like Kupu and Mālama Maunalua. Check them out; maybe you can help with a beach cleanup or plant native trees! These are both non-profit organizations that accept monetary donations.
Visit the Bishop Museum to learn about Hawaiian history and culture! They also have events focused on sustainability and conservation.
If you're visiting Hilo on the Big Island, go visit the Laulima Nature Center! They're a non-profit aimed at protecting Hawaii's native species, and they even have an online store that ships to the US mainland and internationally! (After I post this, I'm gonna head on over and get myself a manu o Kū pin ♡)
A few other tips I have:
DO: Respect the locals' homes. Several beaches and hiking trails have access points in residential areas. Please be mindful to keep your voices down when passing by, and park ONLY in designated parking areas.
DO: Wear reef-safe sunscreen! Sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned in Hawaii because they are known to damage coral reefs.
DON'T: Approach wildlife, particularly honu (sea turtles) and 'īlio holo i ka uaua (Hawaiian monk seals). Stay at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from turtles and at least 50 feet (15 meters) away from monk seals. If you see someone harassing animals, report them to the statewide NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline: (888) 256-9840. You can also contact the Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources.
DON'T: Collect sand, rocks, or other natural items to bring home with you. This is to protect the ecosystems and also out of respect for Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians), who have cultural beliefs regarding lava rocks in particular. Taking lava rocks is extremely disrespectful.
DON'T: Litter! Please throw away your waste in proper trash cans. If you see a bin that says "ʻōpala," that's a trash can!
Many Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are moving to the US mainland because the cost of living in Hawaii has been driven up so high (because of people moving here), they can't afford to live in their ancestral home. So, if you are going to visit or move to Hawaii, please:
- Make the effort to support local businesses, especially those owned by Native Hawaiians!
- Educate yourself and your loved ones about actual Hawaiian culture!
- Try Hawaiian food, like poi!
- Learn some Hawaiian words and don't be afraid to ask how to pronounce words correctly!
- Donate to a food bank!
- Watch films and read books written by Native Hawaiians!
My hope is that whoever sees this post will use it to educate themselves, their friends, and their families who are considering visiting.
My background is in sustainability and the environment, so that's what I know to suggest off the top of my head. If any Kānaka Maoli read this post and have suggestions to add, please do!

Imagine if the writer of the book of Revelation had not used written words to convey the vision, but instead had composed a song to be sung and dance steps to be followed by all those who wanted to understand the prophecy. That is what is distinctive about Native American apocalyptic prophecy: it was interactive. People not only read or heard the prophecy, they physically participated in it. They embodied it in sacred dances. [...] It would not be wrong to say that my ancestors sang and danced their way through the apocalypse, physically moving from one reality to the next.
--We Survived the End Of The World: Lessons from Native America on Apocalypse and Hope by Steven Charleston

• Firstly, the Earth is slowly moving away from the Sun {about 2.36"(6cm)/year}.
• Secondly, he's confusing rotation with orbit.
• Thirdly, and most ridiculously, the number and severity of hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, rising sea levels, droughts, etc has been increasing, breaking historic records almost every year, causing destruction and human suffering on an unprecedented scale — and this Republican senator thinks it's because of body heat.
Our knowledge of Science separates us from the beasts. And, apparently, separates Democrats from Republicans.

The Thunder of Bison Finally Return to the Osage Prairie | WILD HOPE
These mighty giants terraformed the land, diversified prairie ecosystems, and sustained many native tribes across the continent. Now, tribes and conservationists join forces to bring the species back from the brink, finally returning the American bison to their native grasslands.
The Osage Nation in Oklahoma, with help from allies at the Nature Conservancy and the Bronx Zoo, are reviving their cultural and spiritual connection to buffalo by rebuilding a herd that once shared their land. By reigniting traditional land management practices like prescribed fire, the Osage support the herd as it continues to grow, which in turn, restores natural balance that helps the entire prairie ecosystem thrive.

I was a nerdy kid who grew up reading abut the effect that DDT had on birds' eggs, hunting laws, illegal trades, global warming, and how many species were endangered. Including the red kite in the UK.
A few years ago, i lived and worked somewhere that now has a thriving population of red kites - you could look up and see them flying overhead.
Nobody understood why I was so happy to see red kites just.. flying overhead. We have royally screwed up SO MANY things and hurt so many ecosystems and species. But sometimes, just sometimes, we make amends.
And it goes to show, efforts CAN make a difference. We have to keep fighting.
On conservation and survival

Do not forget what Israel and US have done to the PALESTINIANS
I will never forget that boy. Small quiet probably not even ten years old. Surrounded by noise smoke crying reporters questions. Someone asked what he had in his backpack. Just a kid with a schoolbag in the middle of a war zone. You’d expect books maybe snacks maybe toys. But no. He opened it up and inside were the torn pieces of his baby brother.
That image never leaves your head. You do not move on from something like that. You do not file it under sad news and go back to scrolling. That is not a story you read and forget. That is a knife straight to the chest. Because what kind of world forces a child to carry the mangled body of his sibling in a backpack. What kind of world allows that to happen and then pretends to be civilized.
That kid is not some tragic symbol. He is not some line in a headline. He is a human being whose whole life has been ripped apart. And he is not the only one. That is the worst part. He is one of thousands. Maybe tens of thousands. Kids growing up in rubble. Kids waking up to bombs. Kids learning how to dodge snipers before they learn how to read. Kids being asked again and again to explain their trauma for the cameras like that is just part of being Palestinian.
Nobody chooses to live like that. Nobody chooses to be born in a place where every building has a crack every family has a grave and every night might be the last. That is not life that is survival. And they are doing it with strength that most people will never understand. But strength does not mean it is okay. It does not mean they are fine. It means they are forced to become old before they even have a chance to be young.
The worst thing is the world sees all of this and shrugs. Governments make statements. Leaders talk about peace. Media calls it a conflict like it is some fair fight between equals. As if one side is not backed by billions in military aid and the other is digging through the rubble looking for their parents. As if the kid with the backpack and the airstrike that made him pack it are on equal ground.
It is not a war. It is not a conflict. It is not complicated. It is occupation. It is apartheid. It is a brutal campaign of domination that has gone on for generations. And it gets dressed up in diplomatic language so people can sleep better at night. But the truth is simple. This is state backed slaughter and everyone knows it.
And yet the people being killed are still expected to explain themselves. To condemn themselves. To behave. To die quietly. Every time someone fights back the headlines scream terror. But when missiles drop on homes when families are erased in seconds when kids are carrying body parts in schoolbags it is called self defense. What kind of logic is that. What kind of morality is that.
Imagine if it was your brother in that bag. Imagine if you had to watch your mother bleed out under a collapsed roof. Imagine if every time you heard a plane your body froze because it might be the one that kills you. Then imagine the world telling you to be reasonable. To wait. To negotiate. To not get angry. To not resist.
The double standard is not just disgusting it is deadly. Palestinian lives are treated like they are worth less than nothing. And when someone says otherwise they get called biased or antisemitic or radical. No. The radical thing is pretending this is normal. The radical thing is excusing genocide and calling it security. The radical thing is forcing children to carry death on their backs and blaming them for existing.
That boy with the backpack is the truth. Not the polished politicians. Not the pundits on TV. Not the spokespeople with their neat little press statements. The truth is in his hands. In his silence. In his grief. And if that does not break something in you then you are either asleep or you do not want to wake up.
People ask why Palestinians resist. Look at that boy. People ask why there is rage. Look at that boy. People ask why people chant for justice in the streets. Look at that boy. That is not a metaphor. That is not exaggeration. That is what is happening.
And the world keeps funding it. Keeps supporting it. Keeps looking the other way while kids are bombed schools are leveled hospitals are turned into war zones and every attempt to speak out is silenced with tear gas or bullets or bans.
You do not forget something like that. You should not. Because forgetting is how it keeps happening. Forgetting is how the next boy ends up with another bag full of someone he loved.
So no I will never forget. And neither should you. Because if we let that be normal then nothing matters anymore. Nothing at all.

when i was in grade school, the hole in the ozone was going to lead to the death of us all. but legislation was passed and we fixed it (mostly; it’s still healing).
when i was in grade school the only way i could see a bald eagle was in the zoo, or a raptor rescue center if you knew of any. they were going to be extinct because they were all dying, the populations declining. there was even a whole alvin & the chipmunks episode about it. and i was sad that i’d never see a bald eagle in the wild in my lifetime.
but then… again, legislation was passed, and people were made aware, and different choices were made, and some 17 years ago i was able to pick my daughter up from preschool, and on the way back home, stop by a lake in my city and point to the ice layer still holding on that day in march, and tell my child “see that really big bird? next to the crows? that’s a *bald eagle*. they were almost extinct. that’s our national bird, the symbol of our country, and it was almost gone, but we saved it. and now, i have finally seen one in the wild.” and now, in present day, we have a confirmed two nesting pairs on one of the isles in the lake that’s *in the center of my city*, in addition to others here and there. i see them, often enough, circling high over my backyard, in the middle of a mid-size city.
there are success stories. but you have to care. and you have to do what you can as a voting constituent to make sure laws are passed that reach for those goals.
“unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. it’s not.”
why bother caring about the environment when 1. It’s so obviously a lost cause and 2. There’s definitely going to be a nuclear war?
And what are you doing about it Anon? Learn about ecological restoration or get out of my way.
