My ancestors faced cultural genocide at the hands of white people saying that their own culture was the good one. Culture is vital to every aspect of my life, and to my village's life. The ways we have survived, the stories that we tell, the religion and the ceremonies that we practice, the clothes on our back and the food we make, are all *us.* We do not want to fall back into individualistic white hands.

Nobody in this discussion said anything about forcing people to assimilate. Nobody has said that people aren't allowed to practice whatever culture they want.

I specifically have a problem with people who venerate heritage over culture. Plenty of people on this website act like "connecting with your heritage" is an inherently moral thing with the implications that people who don't - or can't, because they don't know their heritage - are immoral, too "modern" or shallow, or are missing some sacred spiritual part of themselves.

I've argued with people on here that insist their children will not be allowed to leave their culture or religion because that would be "participating in their own cultural genocide". When you let your desire to preserve your heritage take precedence over your children's autonomy as humans, that's fucked up.

I'm sick of people directly parroting conservative or even outright neonazi rhetoric about how modern society is too secular and degenerate consumerist and individualistic and we must RETVRN to "traditional family values" and the blood and soil of our ancestors without even realizing it.

Ultimately my view is that culture is important but heritage is not. You don't need a blood connection to find meaning or value in a culture and you don't need to find meaning or value in a culture because of who your ancestors were.

Look I get that culture and heritage can be complicated topics for a lot of reasons, but ultimately I just don't think there's a way to phase We Must Preserve Our Noble Heritage Against The Forces Of Modern Degeneracy that doesn't make you sound like a Nazi.

Actually for that matter a lot of you are just repeating conservative propaganda word for word except you've replaced "modern degeneracy" with "capitalism"

see yourself as an individual who is equally part of all of humanity. ignore the accident of who turned out to be your ancestors as an irrelevant footnote in your causal history. interact with others as themselves and not as if you both are a tendril protruding from the inhuman horror that is your notion of 'heritage'.
