When the notorious Gatwick Hotel in Melbourne was bought by producers of the hit show The Block, they had to hire specialist cleaning teams to go through and clean up the infamous former-hotel-turned-drug den. And what they found was shocking.

The carpets were the first to go. Hundreds of needles were found wedged into the carpets, or portions of the carpets were lifted so that needles, syringes, and other drug paraphernalia could be wedged into the floorboards beneath.

It was a testimony to the years of infamy which has made the old 1950s hotel an eyesore and a haven for dangerous elements in the community.
