Disney is looking to the UK's regional developers and start-ups to help build a new tool promoting healthy living. They are looking to commission a “digital project” aimed at encouraging families to be more actively engaged in their own wellbeing. An amazing opportunity for creative digital SMEs to work with the one of the world’s biggest entertainment companies and is aimed to help families lead healthier lives. Check it, it sounds quite interesting :)

Today we were joined by Pigalle Tavakkoli who runs Experience Events. It was a really inspiring talk and discussion. Her website is full of cases and examples of the kinds of experiences that she creates. And a video of her talking about experience design can be found here.
Here are just a few of the key messages that I noted from the large number of great points that she made:
The importance of research: Your creative work will be much richer, and have much more impact, if it is based on a solid foundation of “research, research, research” about what has come before, and how you might do things better.
Learning from other people’s creative work: Pigalle explained “I go to everything – events, exhibitions, galleries, parties and clubs,” in order to learn from what other people are doing. In particular, she said, when things don’t quite work – when an event does not have a pleasing effect, you can learn a lot from trying to figure out why.
The power of collaboration: Pigalle’s ‘experience events’ are always collaborations between very diverse kinds of people and organisation. It is important not to have ego, when organising these things, she suggested: “The best managers don’t have ego, they are not thinking of themselves, they are just focused on producing a really great result”.
Think deeply about what you want to do: It’s easy to do the first idea you think of, but maybe put that one aside – the later ideas are often deeper and richer.
Document what you do: Pigalle demonstrated the value of keeping great photographs, and a website that documents everything you do. In particular, we saw the value of having a really nice engaging three-minute video that summarises the spirit of each event or project.
Pigalle also said: Try to do what you think is genuinely good – not what you think will be considered ‘cool’.
And in a world where lots of things are ‘digital’, try to come up with meaningful physical experiences which can also be connected and shared digitally. And seek to orchestrate a conversation which begins before, and continues after, an event.

“A world with lots of interesting, creative things is always better than a world which offers a small number of popular, smartly-finished things"                                                                                                                Gauntlett, David (2014)
Despite there were a lot of strong statements made in that particular chapter, personally I believe that quote was the most powerful one. The reason why I am posting this is because I found that reading to be quite interesting and engaging. To be completely honest, when I looked at the topic, the first thought I had was that it would be irrelevant for our project. But after reading, I realised it was actually worth the effort.
One of the biggest struggles I assumed we will have regarding the realisation of our project was the funding. But in that chapter, I found some really useful ways of funding for creative projects. There were several crowdfunding platforms mentioned, which I believe could be quite useful.
Then, another thing that I found quite inspirational was what Gauntlett (2014) says regarding the amateur making. He states that people, who want to “make their mark on the world in some way” and who want to share their message with others, are doing that not because they have to, but “because they want to”. So that particular thought made me think about the whole project. We “have to” do the projects since we are marked on them. But, what I believe the whole module aims is to get us to that point where we are doing something because we want to. Thus, if we do something that we want to, we will feel motivated and the end result will be more than pleasing. We will be willing to collaborate and work in teams not because we “have to”, but simply because we “want to” achieve something.
