Has anyone asked you abt your favorite primate yet 👀
hi, thanks for your question ❤️ my name’s dee. sadly, my friend al (who made this account and started to get it off the ground) went missing. i’ve been looking around here as part of the search for them, but enough time has passed with no leads now that i’ll use this as a chance to give them something of a tribute to tie up loose ends here and start the process of moving on.
i can’t say for sure what species was al’s favorite since they could tell you all kinds of things about so many primates. i don’t know if they could’ve picked just one species to love over the others, but they really loved to talk about capuchins, marmosets and tamarins. they showed me some of their early lab work with monkeys but i can’t id the species without them. i know they were gearing up for some work with apes too but their life’s work would’ve been broader than that.
al would’ve loved this question and probably would’ve dropped something inspirational about humans in their response to make it encouraging. i wish i had a better answer for you, but hope that i’ve done my friend’s love of primates (and some of your curiosity) justice with this little ramble. goodbye al and best wishes to you, anon ❤️

Does anyone else like the uncanny valley feeling when it comes to primates? Idk maybe it’s just me but it’s like a realization that ‘oh I’m literally just some ape’ and it makes me feel better.
I love remembering I'm an animal:
I like fruit because it's sweet and sugary and gives me energy!
I like touch because I'm a social animal in need of reassurance!
Stress just means I'm feeling threatened!
Im just a (mostly) hairless ape doing they're best in the habitat I've been born in.

As a primatologist and a Whovian, I felt it was my duty to make comparison sheets for several incarnations of the Doctor and nonhuman primates I think they resemble (mostly in terms of appearance, but occasionally in terms of behavior) 🫡

A primate appreciation blog wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the ancestors of modern humans. Without further ado, here are the Laetoli footprints from Tanzania!
Quick facts about the footprints can be found here, here, and here. (I don’t guarantee an absence of bias in these publications, but they present interesting aspects of the discussion about the footprints!)

This BBC Earth video is pretty interesting. Please be aware that it concerns grief and loss.
My university is mourning the sudden loss of a phenomenal grad student collaborating on research with members of our anthropology department in Africa. He was killed in the field. May he rest in peace.
