SuicideGirls : Disrupting Hegemony?
http://media-cache-ec2.pinterest.com/192x/f8/c9/d6/f8c9d65aa92ffd415795624614a6a238.jpg
The SuicideGirls is a website that shows semi-nude to full nudity photos of women. It is a playground for the imagination. The mission statement is:
“Everywhere you look TV, movies, and advertisements keep shoving the same photocopied version of beauty down your throat. SuicideGirls was created to demonstrate that beauty comes in many forms, not a single cookie cutter shape and look. What some people think makes us strange or weird or fucked up, we think is what makes us beautiful.”
Is beauty only defined by a woman’s body?
According to SuicideGirls yes, and disruption comes in the addition of tattoos, pricings, sizes larger than 1 or 2.
What I am saying is women are not here on earth to be looked at (by men).
Is there any other way to empower girls without using their bodies?
The gaze:
http://www.tattoo.com/sites/default/files/styles/pin_page/public/field/image/tumblr_mbvrhzdvqa1ruzkp5o1_500.jpg
Suicide Girls is only one of the many forms of media that is made for the male gaze. The women are nude and posing in provocative ways. The creator states that she wanted to show alternative women as beautiful but is Suicide girls really alternative?
The women in the photos are there to be on display, an example of a new fetish. John Berger’s article Ways of Seeing states that nudity is for display and nakedness is for the self (pg. 51). These women are clearly on display. Eagle spread, bending over looking at the camera, touching themselves ect….
http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/13000000/Sash-Suicide-suicide-girls-13081543-319-480.jpg
This is a major opportunity to promote backlash to the stereotypes of people with tattoos and piercings. This opportunity might have been missed, the women do not act they just appear (Berger, p. 50). Instead of having a woman with piercings as a CEO, she pushed back into traditional roles. She is not equal to a man because she is an object of desire, something to be defined by her sex and not her actions.
There is power in the gaze and it robs women of their complexity.
The gaze gives the viewer power over the person inviting (or not) the gaze. In The Oppositional Gaze by bell hooks states that black men were controlled by violence for gazing at white women, this statement can be related to women by the way women’s behavior is controlled by being reminded that they are going to be looked at by the public.
Girl Power?:
Suicide Girls create an illusion that people (women) with body modifications have gain equal opportunity; people with tattoos, piercings, scares, split tongues or implants don’t face discrimination anymore. Suicide Girls becomes an outlet for people who have been rejected in a way to make money and also aides in the fight against stereotypes.

Yes the women are getting paid to pose and they are creating backlash to the narrow ideal of femininity but it is just with body art.
The article Fantasies of Power by Susan J. Douglas states that women choosing to be objectified are seen as empowering.
Douglas definition of enlightened sexism is a response, deliberated or not, to the perceived threat of a new gender regime, getting men to lust is seen as power as well (Douglas. p, 9-10).
The women are embodying the male gaze for themselves; they want to be looked at my men (Dreamworlds 3). This line of thinking is seen has having power.

The women of Suicide Girls are gaining something from being a Suicide Girls it is called confidence but does confidence have to come from being nude?

Notice that the word rape was not used when asking the school children. Rape is not even defined in the statement neither is consent.
Why are people confused and rape culture exist?

Violence against women at it's finest. Somethings that are considered violence can be just culture taken out of context but what is the justification of throwing acid on people faces?

Resume of thoughts: Fifty shades of Grey
Fifty Shades of Grey has opened up the doors to allow women to let their wild side come into public view. Yes, sex talk by women in a public space! Sex in the City real life.
This is a big change from my grandmother generation. Sex was forbidden to be spoken of by women let alone enjoyed. Sex could not even be explained to women. But…Christian Grey and Anastasia steel’s relationship changes all of that.
Readers have thrown themselves into Ana’s shoes and can feel what she feels. Hot Hot HOT HHOOOTT sex and spankings. Women don’t need to talk about their sex life but they can talk about fictional a character’s sex life. This is power because it opens a doorway for imagination to be free, it allows women to question wither they might enjoy a spanking once in a while. Exploring one’s sexuality is just one of the ways to find one’ self.
There is a dark side to Fifty Shades
It paints a picture that a person is mentally ill if they engage in BDSM. Christian is not sane! He was abused as a child by his now business partner.
He is very aggressive when it comes to Ana and he does not ask for consent!!!!
Sex without consent is rape and it is attached to romance and love within the book. Danger Danger!
Any type of sexual act should be safe, sane (no anger!) and consensual (just ask first).
BDSM= bondage, domination, sadomasochistic

Men are taught to be affirmative and to take action. Woman on the other hand who are affirmative and take action are bitches and saying no means there is a problem to be worked out. Woman not wanting to have sex means she isn't in the mood and a man has to work harder to get want he wants. Very sad and damaging to society.

The fashion world getting the picture that women's bodies are not the same. An body that more women can relate to!!!!!

Swedish Mannequins Spark Internet Praise-a-Thon
Since female mannequins are typically sizes 4 - 6, and the average American woman is a size 14, these more realistically proportioned mannequins found in a Swedish department store have gone viral.

The cats meow!!!!

Dear Catwoman,
I hope France is more beautiful than it looks in the pictures. I really miss you. The house feels so empty but you have earned this trip. You have been gone for only a week and it feels like ten years. When you come back it will be our five year anniversary! Can you believe that it has been five years? I remember the first time me met, you was robbing Tiffany’s! Hahaha I have never took that ring off.
I ran into Batman the other night, he still kinda pissed off that the love affair between you and him didn’t work. Sad really, isn’t the hero supposed to get all the riches, except you. I know what you thinking Batman? Really? Yeah it been awhile since he been out, Two face has gone mad and been setting things on fire so I guess he has to come out that Bat Cave sometime. For our anniversary, let’s follow him back and see where his cave is? The Bat is scared to come out since The Riddler started sending dirty jokes to CEOs searching for the Batman!
But it isn’t as funny without hearing your laugh.
I found a sergeant mom that didn’t ask about our profession. Hahaha. I can’t wait for you to meet her she amazing.
I was at Hustler and found the cutest addition to your costume it’s a matching chastity belt. As if your costume was not sexy enough. Maybe we ought to get match colors? And a stripper pole in our bed room?
Gotta go boo
Love you!
Your Fiancé,
Harley Quinn

Hey Kwanna, you have a lot of awesome reblogs on your site, but none of them are tagged as relevant reblogs. If you want me to grade those, please tag em and make sure you add a short commentary on how it relates to class. If they're just there to spice up your blog though, no worries! They look awesome. :)
I didn't know they could be reblogs. They was just there to share.

Je joue aux jeux vidéo mais.... ( I play video games but...)
I love video games but when I tell men this they are usually surprised. I was not sure if it was because I did not fit the personality of a gamer but later found out it is mainly because I am a woman( in case you did not notice).
In a class, my professor asked “Who believes that women should be allowed to join the military?” all most all hands went up. Then the next question was “Should women be drafted?” to no surprise 90% of the hands went down. Interesting but where might these actions stem from? One place might be video games.
“Help me, help me I have fallen and can’t get up!”
http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs19/f/2007/236/2/7/damsel_in_distress_by_deaart.jpg
The famous damsel in distress is a role that women have been placed in for centuries. In video games the trop has been a lazy way of making plots for games. The subject, the one doing the adventure (protagonist) is usually male and the woman or women is the object (Feminist Frequency). The damsel is acted upon, objectified, a prize or stolen form the protagonist. The woman is helpless needing to be saved by the male. This dis-empowers women and she becomes the motivation of the man’s Le raison d’être (the reason for existing). When males in games are trapped there is not a woman that comes to the rescue but he saves himself! Wow! He uses his skills to get himself out of the trap. This makes it seem that women are not capable of protecting and taking care of themselves. This is very disempowering for women. We are dumb and can’t control our own destinies!
http://boomansion.net/media/artwork/spp/peach.jpg
Speaking of people who can’t control their own their own destinies is the queen of being damsel in distress Princess Peach. Got love her!!! In most of the Mario video games Peach needs to be rescued at one point of the game.
This trop is a generic way for adolescent fantasies to play out to get sells.
Men fight for women and women fight for ummmm………..
Poor helpless women in real life also needs saving. Women in the work force still get paid less than men and also expected to have a family and leave the work force. Men are expected to take care of a family and his wife!!!
http://aksarbent.blogspot.com/2012/03/video-games-get-gaymier-racier-modless.html
Check out the video!
Not only is the damsel in distress dis-empowering to women but it can also reinforce males needing a woman as a goal not once I have seen a male romantically rescuing another male for a prize. I would play that game! Wink wink trophy wife anyone? Having two or more male characters desiring each other is too much of a risk granted that video games are made for straight men (Prejudices). Be heterosexual says the gamers!
But don’t just be heterosexual but be a douchbag as well.
Male gamers are harassing women gamers. Don’t surprise me in a culture that tells males that women are below them and sexist comments that refer to males as females is an insult.
On Fat, Ugly or Slutty, women try to shame the people making these nasty comments by posting them publically but why does it have to be up to the women?
In the article YES, I PLAY VIDEO GAMES, AND NO, YOU CANNOT SEE MY BOOBS the author writes about how she was harassed online and thus she only plays with people she knows for now on. Men were making extremely rude comments and that women should not just have to stand up for themselves but men learn self-control.
D’accord
And it is not just women gamers but women working in the gaming industry. For some odd (hahaha odd) reason women cannot comprehend games let alone critique or design.
Learning how to work a PlayStation will take some time! Sorry ladies.
