Ellison's treatment of race in the 1952 novel anticipated questions about the future of African-Americans that still resonate, says Khalil Gibran Muhammad, director of the Schomburg center and the great-grandson of the late Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. "When I was a kid, I read the English novels. I read Russian translations and so on. And always, I was the hero. I identified with the hero," Ellison said. "Literature is integrated. And I'm not just talking about color, race. I'm talking about the power of literature to make us recognize again and again the wholeness of the human experience."

"Whether we look at the invisibility of a Trayvon Martin, or the invisibility of a Magic Johnson in light of the most recent controversy over Don Sterling," Muhammad says, "or even the ways in which the contemporary art world for black visual artists turn on whether they have a responsibility to depict blackness through traditional narratives — are all themes that Ralph Ellison brought to his work." Writing Out Of Experience Ellison drew on his own struggles to create Invisible Man.

Three years later he traveled to New York to earn money to pay his tuition. There he met writers Langston Hughes and Richard Wright. Rampersad says Ellison started late as a writer: "He was 22 or so before Richard Wright turned to him one day and said, 'Why don't you try a short story?' And he worked very hard over a period of seven years to produce a masterpiece. And he succeeded." 'Literature Is Integrated' Invisible Man was hailed as a landmark. But in 1983, Ellison said he wasn't writing only about the blackexperience in the novel. He became something of a Renaissance man — turning to fiber adaptor, photography and music. He studied the cornet and then trumpet and piano. In 1933, he attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, intent on becoming a composer.

"The death of his father when he was 3 was the decisive event of his earlier life because it plunged his family into poverty," says Ellison biographer Arnold Rampersad. "And so he — although he had influential upstanding friends and patrons in his youth, he really was always aware that he ... had virtually nothing and was dependent on others." Rampersad says Ellison spent the rest of his life trying toredress his impoverished beginnings.

Having a slow Internet connection is more serious than not being able to keep up with your favorite TV show on Hulu or Netflix. Working from home or online banking can be fraught with headaches and delays. Breann Neal of Hudson, Ill., says her only viable option is a DSL connection, which can be frustrating.

At times she can't do her job because of the spotting connection. There are parts of the country, however, where things are substantially better: like in Chattanooga, Tenn. Mayor Andy Berke says the city has "the largest, fastest, most pervasive Internet in the Western hemisphere." About four years ago, the public electric utility EPB , mostly to help deal with power outages. But the utility realized an added benefit: That same grid can carry very high-speed Internet. So, for $70 a month, the company now offers customers upload and download speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, about . Berke tells NPR's Arun Rath that the fiber optic grid is an investment in the future, when more businesses will need that superfast broadband.

"There's no incentive for them to make it better for us because we're still paying them every month ... and there's no competition," Neal says. That might be expected in a small town like Hudson. But even in a big city like Chicago? Samantha Laws, who gets her Internet through her cable provider, says she also only has one option. "It goes out at least once a day, and it's been getting worse the last few months," Laws says. She works with a pet-sitting company that handles all of its scheduling through email and the company website.

Few Alternatives For Many In some other places, private companies have made the investment in high-speed infrastructure. There's Verizon's fiber optics network FiOS, and in Kansas City and plans to expand to Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah. Elsewhere in the country, options remain limited. "We're starting to see companies who are looking at us ... who understand that they will need more capacity in the future, and Chattanooga has that today," he says. For example, he says a tech startup called Quickcue is growing and creating jobs in Chattanooga. But it's all come at a steep price. Installing the grid cost about $300 million.

That is why a paid $300 million to create a straight-line fiber patch panel Blink between Chicago and New York, allowing them to reduce the signal travel time from 17 milliseconds to 13 milliseconds. That 4 millisecond trading advantage allowed the group to charge clients $14 million a year to use their new electronic pipeline.

Many before have argued that there is an inherent instability in trading running at the rate of milliseconds, or 1/1000 of a second (it takes about for you to blink your eye). Since the Flash Crash of 2010, when the market lost and then quickly regained 9 percent of its total value, high-frequency trading (and the algorithms on which they depend) has been a topic of robust That however is not Michael Lewis's focus. Instead, Lewis argues, high frequency trading has allowed the entire system to be gamed.

By exploiting the time it takes for a signal to travel down a wire, high-frequency traders were able to peer into the actions of their competitors before the system acted on those actions. In response, traditional traders spoke of feeling like the market was running away from them.

Scarmeas says the people who ate diets which most closely resembled the Mediterranean diet were 36 percent less likely to experience small strokes. The results will be presented at the of the American Academy of Neurology in April. How come? Scarmeas doesn't know for sure, but speculates that the diet somehow protects blood vessels by reducing plaque and clotting. Which would make sense, because cardiologists have long known that the Mediterranean diet is heart-healthy.

And the diet-brain connection is made stronger by another study Scarmeas did, showing that people who ate the diet are 40 percent less likely to have Alzheimer's disease. Scarmeas cautions, though, that before firm conclusions can be drawn, more research is needed. The accuracy of studies like this one, which relied on people's recollection of what they ate, suffer from the inability of people to remember well, even under the best of circumstances.

Klodas says it could be the high fiber patch panel in the fruits and vegetables. Whatever the source, people who stick to the Mediterranean diet tend to have healthy weights. Studies have shown it lowers bad cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing good cholesterol and the body's ability to process sugar. "If you put all those things together, those are all favorable," says cardiologist Elizabeth Klodas of the American College of Cardiology. Nobody's certain what part of the diet is most useful.

A fresh hot meal is a thing of beauty when you're having a tough go of things, and can literally bring tears to people's eyes. But a full freezer — that's money in the bank. It's the security of knowing that you'll be taken care of in the future, that you don't have to figure out how to manage everything by the time your friends give up the daily check-in. It's an amazing gift to those having a rough patch — heck, it's even a great gift to yourself when you know that busier times are ahead.

The all-in-one casserole is an easy freezer offering — and especially appreciated if you can add some healthy interest. Tucking an assortment of greens (and oranges and purples) into a frozen meal helps friends get the nutrition they need, even when they don't have the time to fuss with their own produce. Going for mac-n-cheese? Replace a portion of the noodles with broccoli or cauliflower to give an all-in-one balanced meal. (Vegetables can be simmered with the noodles for the final minute of cooking, or, for a richer flavor, roasted until lightly caramelized and then stirred into the casserole.) Zucchini, corn and spinach easily round out a tray of enchiladas, and quiches can be just as much chard as custard. Unfortunately, for many cooks, soups and casseroles translate to heavy flavors.

You've got to do it right, though. As with any gift, it's best to check in and make sure you know what would be appreciated. Life events and personal tastes are all different — some nursing mothers avoid onions or spices, while others happily crave a good chili burrito. fiber optics friends might crave mac-and-cheese for a taste of comfort, or they may prefer lean meats and fiber to rebuild muscle and help things move along.
