It wasn’t quite a lull, but autumn brought a slower pace for events and wedding planning. It offered at least enough of a reprieve for a weeklong trip to the mountains. Away from the bustle and noise of New York City. Away from the pollution and smog-filled skies. Away from the skyscrapers looming tall. Away from the never-ending phone calls and last-minute emails. For just one week, Mari and Justin would unplug (at least as much as New York City’s top event planner, CEO, and finest wedding planner could unplug). 

The cozy cabin they rented nestled into the autumnal forest, providing a quiet retreat to its weary guests. The wooden exterior seemed almost camouflage against the dark trees surrounding it. The silent lake whispered; its breath giving rise to a light fog that would seep all around them and by morning wrap them in its wispy cocoon.

Her feet dragged her mindlessly through the house mostly on muscle memory. She swayed somewhere between sleep and consciousness, pulled solely by the scent of that magical aroma. A low chuckle escaped her lips; she quite imagined herself as one of those classic cartoon characters that literally drifts involuntarily toward a particularly alluring smell. For Alex, there was nothing more tempting than that bold, nutty olfactory experience from freshly ground and brewed coffee beans. 

The grey barstool chair slid away from the high kitchen counter long enough for Alex to plop into it with a soft thud. Thomas pressed the gentlest of kisses over her temple, brushing back her tousled morning hair that flurried around her head. 

The gesture drew a soft murmur from her as a soothing sensation warmed her at his touch. 

He pushed her chair in, bringing her closer to the counter. Her arm extended out over the marble-top as her tired head fell upon her upper arm. 

Thomas returned to the other side of the island, continuing where he had left off. Pans sizzled and popped on the stove causing the room to swell with a blend of delicious scents; though only one called to her the loudest. He placed the large ceramic mug in front of her, carefully leading her to the magic elixir that would wake his sleeping bride. 

Her fingers curled around the warmth of the curved surface drawing it toward her. Her face lifted off her arm until she sat upright. She held the mug close, breathing in the heavenly scent. Her lips parted as the dark liquid seeped slowly into her mouth, the rich flavors lingering for a moment on her tongue. A smile lit up her eyes even before they eventually crept open. 

“Good morning,” he spoke for the first time. He knew that there were only two ways to wake Alex: coffee, or kisses, or both. Talking was not one of them. 

Her lips curled up, her eyes still adjusting to the array of plates and breakfast foods being prepared before her. With her coffee securely in one hand, the other drifted across the counter, searching for his. “How did I get so lucky?”

He entwined his fingers with hers, turning her hand in his to leave a trail of kisses across her knuckles. “I love you, too.”

“Though it is a pity your sister departed this earth, she had become a bit high handed in her views.” Lord Tully chortled with a few of the guests who stood nearby.

Lady Huntsbury softly spoke up. “I think if she had lived, Miss Amelia’s passionate nature would have turned to the family she would have created with Francis.”

“Quite right.” He agreed. “Politics and the running of the world is a man’s duty.” Lord Tully snorted in irritation. “Miss Amelia’s thoughts tended to be, not that I expect you ladies to understand, anti-imperialist.”

The scent of the crisp, near-autumn air tangled with that of the just-beginning-to-turn leaves, on the cool Massachusetts’ morning. Though the sun illuminated the sky, the brisk night’s breath lingered in the fields above the dew-covered grass that had yet to dry.

“Remind me again why we had to be the first ones here on our one day off?” Bryce stretched, fighting back a sleepy yawn. “–the one day we get to sleep in… and when I can have you to myself.”

His strong arms snaked around her, pulling her from her quiet appreciation for the autumn orchard in front of them.

Olivia nuzzled into the warmth of his chest, her hands traced the length of his arms in front of her, sending a tingle down his spine. “On our next day off, you can choose what we do, but today, we are apple picking. Successful apple picking requires patience and diligence in searching for the just-right apples, but it also requires being the first one to the elusive prize.”

“And the prize is—”

“The juiciest, most deliciously refreshing apples, of course!”

“Of course.” He brushed a kiss on the top of her head, suppressing a laugh at her determination. “Where to first?”

- Beta padhai par dhyaan do, dost aate jaate hai: Child, focus on your studies, friends come and go (TBH this is the one line which maximum desi kids have heard while growing up. That’s why we can be uh.. awkward in making new friends lol)

-Main kya gadhi hoon: I’m such a dumbass (side note: gadhi (female) actually means donkey in hindi)

-Duniya main maine itna bada gaandu kabhi dekha nahi hai maine: I have not seen a bigger asshole than this guy. (yes I love swearing in hindi and what about it)

My fingers ran against the spines of the book, my head tilted as I searched for a new book to dive into.

“Found anything of your liking, Aisha?” Tina, the librarian asked, her kind eyes twinkling. The old librarian loved me because I always helped around in sorting the books or with checkout. She suggested that if I were to help her, she would pay me so I decided why not?

But the lack of people coming to the library and their constant need to be fake on social media, flexing about their looks instead of textbooks often left the library empty which consequently resulted in free time.

Not that I minded.
