the main thing I’ve gathered from the Pacific Rim director’s commentary is that, even though a lot more of PacRim was done with CGI than I had realized, it still holds up almost 10 years later because of how intentional Guillermo Del Toro was with building in details, flaws, weathering and environmental factors, and, primarily, love and respect into every single model.

He helped animate every single creature and robot by hand on his tablet, he praised the animators for every single shot and talks about how brilliant they are, how hard they worked on every detail, he treats all of them like human beings, like geniuses, just as integral to the film as himself and the actors. The animators themselves talk about how intentional and detailed his ideas were, how helpful and insightful he was when he spoke to them about changes, when he came to them with new ideas.

There’s also a hell of a lot of practical effects woven in, which add to the believability, but the CGI holds up first and foremost because he saw it as an art form to be cultivated and loved just as fiercely as everything else, not a ‘wow’ effect to be slapped in for budget cuts.

For what it's worth, I know it must have hurt like hell when Herc drifted with Chuck for the first time and saw all the pain, hurt and resentment Chuck felt for him.

Can you imagine?

You're seeing your kid crying on memories. He's secretly begging for his dad to be more present. He's destroying toys alone in his room. He's full of rage and saying he wished his mom was alive and not him. Yet he's so proud of his dad he cannot even mean that he wished his dad was dead and not his mom. He misses his uncle, yet he doesn't know what Scott did yet. You can feel how happy and proud he was when they told him that he'd pilot with you. You hear a memory of him saying in class "my dad is my hero". You listen to curse after curse after curse in his mind, all directed to you. That's your little boy. You don't know him anymore. You're in his mind. You can't reach him.

And you cannot stay in any of those memories or the test will fail.

Honestly I miss the energy Tumblr had when the first Pacfic Rim movie came out. Everybody was talking about who they were drift compatible with and that was like a huge compliment. Ppl were drawing Kaijus, and Jaegers, naming ‘em. It was a better time
