Talchet Week 2025: Day 7 “Future”

It’s a beautiful night.

Out the pressurized windows, the asteroids glitter in the radiation from the nearest star. Distant star clusters and galaxies swirl in a lazy glow. The engines hum quietly. Apogee Space Station is at peace.

Talwyn fell asleep a few hours ago.

Before that, she gave Ratchet a look so gentle and so tender, so overflowing with contentment and happiness, a tiny smile finding its way into the deep lines on her face. It said everything that she could no longer say. All he’s been dying to hear since she lost the ability to speak. And she gave his hand a little squeeze.

He hasn’t let go of her hand since then.

But her grip softens, slackens, melts. The breath she draws and then releases is so soft and small, he knows it must be the last one.

He’s right.

Only then does he gather her fully into his arms and weep.

It doesn’t matter that he saw this coming seventy-five years ago. He thought he could bear it, when he was young.

What did he know?

She passed painlessly and peacefully, at his side, surrounded by everything she worked for, everything she loved. And that’s such small comfort it may as well be one of those distant galaxies, glittering unreachable out the window.

His last words to her, as he’d always hoped, were “I love you.”

But there’s still so much more to say.
