I could not rest until it was done HSJSJS #ena dream bbq + deltarune osts came in clutch for this one ajdjsjsjsjsk…..#THESE TAGS ARE SOOOOO SWEET OUGHHH DANNY…. AGH <33333 #anyways YESSSSSS im glad the vision on how miserable this piece is is coming across ehnshbdhsbfh #I put a lot of thought into how i presented it.... wanting it to be flat and bright on purpose #specifically with the sun's reflection in the sea which is just lines. it is so flat and fake and it OUGHHHH it kills me #some elaboration i wanted to add too but couldn't because i hit tag limit originally LMAO:#the flowers specifically are supposed to be butterfly weed....#specifically because of their more negative connotations. they represent solitude which is a core theme of the piece #but also “let me go”. which is a fun double meaning because it actually means that in the context of grief!! letting go of a loved one #this world only exists because sunny couldn't let mari go and now the being trapped within is begging to be “let go”. fun!#it's also very intentional that you can't see ANYTHING's expression here. you can't see mariware's face you can't see the sun's stupid smil #even if you know it's there #no one is there to see how mariware feels. and i didn't want you to be able to see it #so i wanted that to be visible only in the environment. i wanted the landscape to represent what they feel because nobody else is there to-#observe THEM and observe their face and their feelings. no one COULD understand anyways #with a lonely little cliff overseeing a vacant blue sea as the sun is just out of view #you really DID hit the nail on the head with the horror of mariware's existence in their little world #maybe a reason they crave human interaction so bad is because they want somebody real that changes #they want to wake up tomorrow and for the person they see to say and feel something different than they did yesterday #they want to see storms and rain and changing weather that isn't just eternal sun over an empty bright wasteland #they want to walk and keep walking and never hit a dead end #because even if they do have this entire world to explore. even if they technically “escaped” a prison they were supposed to be bound to #they have merely walked into a new one. somewhere so blatantly fake and exhausted after the people-#the REAL people this place was made for #have already been and done everything they'll never experience #that it doesn't even feel disappointing when they walk for a while and end up reaching a roadblock. reaching the end of the universe

I kinda just wandered around in the water #I had a great day and then I went home #lying in the summer heat with the breeze from the open windows on my skin #in that snapshot of life I experienced #as I began to draw this piece and as the idea came to my head #I thought about mariware. and I thought about the breeze they’d never feel #the sun and the sky and the stars and the clouds they’d never see.#and I thought about that. and it was such an intense emotion and I hope that I captured even a little bit of it in here #ANYWAYS. WHAT THIS MEANS SHSJSJSJSJ #I’ve been thinking more about mariware’s role within the actual game in puter they originate from #I’ve definitely mentioned it before and it’s very apparent in their design but #they’re supposed to be a sort of princess peach-like character. a kind of damsel in distress???#narratively literally and figuratively mariware is always trapped #within the actual narrative of the game as it was supposed to be they were supposed to stay in their tower until rescue comes #and even then. the game would end before they’d even get to step outside #I’m thinking about mariware leaving their tower in their newfound sentience #stepping outside and seeing the world they never got to #and just. seeing how absolutely false it is #congratulations!!! you made it out of your dark little cage #but the player has come by and done everything there is to do. there is nothing left in this plastic binary place #no sign of life or sentience but you. no movement except for the rise and fall of a false grinning sun you know means nothing #don’t you feel free. Don’t you feel like you made it out #don’t you feel like you’re seeing the world.

First sketch of Andy! The EdenTech character that replaces Carlton

Some initial characterization: Andy is generally a sweet guy but unpopular with people his age because they think he’s “off” (he’s just autistic) he stumbles over his words a bit but is a very exited speaker if you’ll let him talk, he’s extremely into chemistry- it’s genuinely his special interest and he’s had a love for it since childhood, him and Cecil first met in middle school when Cecil asked for help with homework- after that first meeting Andy asked if he wanted to be his lab partner if he needed more help and well…they were friends ever since

Older people think Andy is just a delight- especially his own parents, Andy’s dad doesn’t get much of his interests but thinks he’s smart and has a bright future ahead of him- Andy’s mom has tried her best to learn some of what he talks about and indulges him with textbooks and (safe) experiments to try in the kitchen, she brags a bit to other ladies when she goes over for dinner or checkers (the ladies in town have a game club where they play stuff like chess and Go and aforementioned checkers)

Andy has a major crush on Cecil, he sort of always found Cecil cool and mysterious but as the two have gotten older it’s only gotten worse (in his eyes at least), Andy is DEEPLY self conscious of this and has really been beating himself up over it- when him and Cecil were just kids he felt he could justify it as something he’d grow out of, but now he’s 18 and Cecil is about to be 18 and he feels like there’s something wrong with him, why won’t it go away? Why must he ruin everything? He’s convinced Cecil would hate him if he ever found out

Other facts: the surname I picked out for him is a Hungarian name that means “golden” which has the double meaning of linking him to Cecil with his signature color AND of Andy being a golden child (plus in Cheshire days their ship name was rosegold and I intend to keep that thank you very much) ALSO Andy’s dad is still a cop because that comes up a little

To be clear when I specified his ethnicity I mean that his whole family is American born, that’s just his background- I completely forget if I ever mentioned it but I do that for most characters I make, Uriel is Haitian dependent and I brought up briefly how Whittaker is Irish (although he was actually born in Ireland and moved to the us as an adult but idk that’s for later this post isn’t about him)

Also WOW LONG POST! But who cares I love Andy to death because he’s adorable and him and Cecil mean a lot to meeeeeee- I had all these ideas while drawing him just now and I just…look at him…look at my boy, my boys the both of them! Also about how Cecil feels: Cecil does like Andy but it’s different for him, he doesn’t think about it much and wrote of the idea of relationship while ago, he jsur doesn’t see it as an option- no matter how cute and smart his best friend is… not like they could get married anyway right? And he thinks his mom would be disappointed to not have grandkids
