Shoutout to @alienstardustt for posting the season 1-2 scripts! But GUYS.

THIS scene:
“He taps his foot, desperate for this night to just be over already.”
MIND YOU, THIS WAS AFTER THIS SCENE:

Where we watch Mike staring at the dance floor for 30 seconds, at WILL after he and the girl move to the center.
he’s DESPERATE for the night to be over? Even though el hadn’t even arrived yet? I’m gonna explode..

The structure of Stranger Things has deliberately centered Mike and Will’s relationship as a focal point, platonic or not. Although if the story was supposed to be about them resolving their friendship, the writers wouldn’t have had Mike and Will reconcile in the penultimate season. Because they already reconciled, there’s nowhere new for their “friendship” to go narratively. They already worked through their jealousy, resentment, miscommunication etc. and literally end the season closer than ever and with great communication. Remind me again why I’m supposed to view their relationship as pivotal to the structure of the story??? Oh yeah probably because it’s not a friendship lol.

Double Byler because they both parallel each other in so many ways; it’s kinda insane. But what I want to point out is that they even parallel in each other’s low points and disagreements.
In season three, Mike and Will fight over the fact that Will can’t grow up. That he thought that everything was going to be the same, and that’s not what the real world is like. That they were going to get girlfriends at some point. They argue over the fact that Mike was being a jerk, and just started straight up abandoning them because of him dating El.
In that same season, Jonathan and Nancy fight as well, and the reasons parallel each other in a subtle way. The main difference is that instead of Will paralleling Jonathan, he takes Nancy’s role this time a little more and vice versa. Jonathan calls out Nancy for not being able to handle what the real world is like, and Nancy accuses Jonathan of being a jerk. Kinda familiar, isn’t it?
Let’s now address season four, where the parallels are more direct and in your face. Jonathan and Nancy are frustrated with each other because of their lack of communication and the distance in their relationship, and not being able to tell what the other one wants. The same thing goes for Mike and Will. They don’t like the fact that they’ve barely communicated and can’t tell what the other wants.
Also, just for bonus points, Steve still being a potential love interest parallels how El is still a potential love interest despite the relationship clearly not working out and being toxic for both parties. The fact that the third option is still there makes Byler and Jancy parallel each other, and once Steve and El completely lose feelings for their respective interest, it’s clear what ships will be endgame.
I think it’s extremely telling that El doesn’t parallel Jonathan or Nancy, but rather Steve, that makes Byler a little more canon. Because mil*ven won’t work out, but byler will. Just like how st*ncy didn’t work out, but jancy will.
I don’t think I explained my thought process very well, but hopefully my message got across??
