I NEED mental health spaces to be more open to people with conditions other than anxiety/depression.

I NEED you to include people with Schizospec disorders, personality disorders, addictions and substance use disorders, factitious disorders, BIID, etc.

Also include those with comorbidities such as physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, blind people, d/Deaf people, EVERYONE.

Don’t be going around bragging how inclusive your mental health community/space is when you don’t even include half the mentally ill people.

I can’t believe I need to say this, but “I can reclaim x slur” does not mean “I can use that slur against others as a slur, specifically in order to denigrate them due to their marginalized identity.”

You can reclaim fag, sure. You can’t go around calling gay people you hate “degenerate fags,” and then hide behind “but I can reclaim it!” when people rightly call you out. You can reclaim retard, or cripple. But you can’t expect people to nod and agree and coddle you when you call people with developmental disabilities “fucking retards” and make fun of all the “whiny cripples” who need mobility aids, or braille, or closed captioning, or other accessibility accommodations.

You fundamentally can’t reclaim a slur in order to harm others – that’s not reclaiming the slur, that’s just using it.

Slur reclamation is not and was never a super special license to use slurs against others (provided that you yourself are sufficiently oppressed). It was never about that.

Some of y’all just want permission to be the bullies, and it shows.

i know that “don’t harass people for being weird, they might be autistic!” is a fairly popular take on here. but as a Certified Autist, i’d like to add that harassing allistic and/or neurotypical people for being weird is also bad, and should not be done

and before you come in with “yeah, you never know who is and isn’t autistic, and you shouldn’t force people to out themselves!” i want to say two things: one, i agree. and two, even if you could magically avoid ever harassing a single autistic person, it still wouldn’t be okay to go after NTs for being weird. they’re people, janice. they’re allowed to be really invested in naruto

happy disability pride to the autistic people whose first reaction to getting overwhelmed in any way is anger. angry at something for being new, angry at people for pushing you, angry in general for everything being too much, whatever. there's no right way to have emotional deregulation and you don't have to be sorry that your first response is to get angry.

There has been a crazy amount of fear-mongering about the age of first time moms getting older and older and how moms 40+ were the only demographic of women where the fertility rate rose, making it the first time in history that there are more women 40+ having children than teen pregnancies. The right is spinning this as being indicative of modern women being selfish and sewing in rhetoric about how a woman’s eggs dry up and blow away the moment she hits 30.

What is interesting is that they never mention the average age for a first time mom is 27 and the average age for a first time dad is 31. We are seeing dudes who are 50 saying “I’m not ready to settle down and start a family, I’m going to do that someday but I’m still out here seeing my wild oats.” My dad is 55 and several of his friends have had kids in the past 5 years. They’re angry at girls and women for not popping out babies the moment they start menstruating but not at men for deciding to start a family when they are GERIATRIC!

Maybe the birth rate would be higher if it was easier to find a good life partner and start a family sooner. Maybe it would be higher if there were less men dicking around for 50+ years and deciding to start a family only when they’re on the precipice of entering a nursing home, at which time their female peers have gone through menopause and the 20 something girls they chase don’t want them. It is always the fault of women when it comes to matters of reproductive health. It is their fault if they become a single mother. It is their fault if they don’t get to start a family until they’re 40+. It is their fault if they choose to be child free because of the state of the world and the amount of trust it requires to have a child with someone.

Why are grandpa-dads something we’re expected to turn a blind eye to and women over 40 having their first baby something we’re supposed to be angry at?

If your ex can ‘bait’ you into having a meltdown and reacting poorly because she posted a video of herself and her new boyfriend 3 years after you divorced, that is totally on you and not her. If you’re so fragile that you can be set off by the tiniest irritant then I think she SHOULD be able to use that in court against you. Unfortunately, like many cases with domestic violence lingo, the term ‘reactive abuse’ has been co-opted by abusers. If you are so unhinged and full of rage that your ex moving on makes you seethe and lash out, that is not ‘reactive abuse’, that is you lacking all self control.

Something that burns me alive every time I hear it is “If you don’t have kids, who will take care of you when you’re old?” A child is not a retirement plan. A child is not an advanced directive or a nursing home or a home health aid. A child is not a reliable caregiver you have to groom into shape for 40 years. Hell, you might be a caregiver to your child for the rest of your life. Even if they’re born healthy and happy, they could get hit by a car and have massive brain damage at any point in their life. Do not have a kid solely so you can depend on them. That is a fucking evil reason to have kids.

A lot of people make fun of how “get divorced/breakup” is the go-to response for most r/RelationshipAdvice and r/AmITheAsshole? posts but if your relationship gets to the point where you feel like you can’t talk to anyone IRL and have to ask for advice and opinions online, there is something severely wrong. Sometimes the subjects say it themselves, “I can’t ask my friends and family about this because they already hate my partner and I don’t want to give them ammunition.” abusive relationships isolate the person at the center, make them feel like they constantly have to be on the defensive for their shitty partner. Which is why these people will post about their partner putting them in the most diabolical situation imaginable and then spend their entire afternoon defending them with their whole chest and replying to every comment. All you can do is reiterate “This is not normal behavior. Your partner is not a good person with a couple of flaws, they’re making your life worse. Breakup.” even as a neutral third party who doesn’t know either of these people in real life.
