ruby.

“Into the strider..?“ Ruby began, tilting her head slightly in confusion. But then the spark of realization hit her and she began to laugh lightly. “No no! I’m not a pilot. I suppose We never really got formerly introduced. I’m an engineer for the ESU. I work under Dr. Weller helping with Holon maintenance and I’ve been helping Mr. Garza get used to his new position. I could never be a pilot, even though I would like nothing more.“ Looking down at her little project, she smiled brightly and set town her tools. Picking up what seemed to be a leg, she passed it over to Cammie.
“Just a little something I’ve been working on. It’s been pretty lonely being the youngest member of the ESU and I wanted a friend.“ Hopping off her bed, Ruby crouched down and pulled out a large container from underneath. Removing the lid revealed a robotic dog, still very much under construction.
‘ oh yeah. you knew who i was, but not the other way ‘round. ’ cammie supposed that was fair. the rookies alongside her had only arrived in the anvil about a week ago, and they’d been coerced into gen : lock training immediately. there had been very little time to observe her new surroundings, explore, understand the ins and outs of the place. then again, they’d been told that if they didn’t pass their qualifiers then they would be kicked off, theoretically, she shouldn’t have been as invested into this new way of life, but here cammie was ; calling dibs on electrical outlets and hacking the vending machines. if it wasn’t clear by now, despite the life threatening situations cammie would eventually subject her to, she now called the anvil home. it was so much better than where she’d come from. she’s puzzled by the initial robotic limb for all but a moment, letting out a girlish shriek upon seeing ruby’s project. ‘ oh ! oh, rubes they’re lovely. ah — look at the smooth interface ! the joint construction and the amazing work on the panel suspenders — ’ how she loved robotics in any form, but especially in cute animal form. ‘ ‘ave they got a name yet ? ’

“Ah, nothin’ but a bee sting.” He’s been through worse. A pockmark on his lower back where a bullet entered and didn’t come out stings at the thought. He just stares at Nugget, watching him. While the bite hurts, sometimes the best way to show an animal you don’t mean them any harm is to let them see you not flinch when they react. “Cantankerous lil’ fella, ain’t he?” Raymond says, a laugh in his voice as he turns to Cammie, Nugget still dangling from the chomped finger, as he offers the robot back to his owner. “It’s alright-back home t’ mama, no harm done.” He can still type with that finger, so it must be fine!
cammie held her hands out to receive her pet, at least in her holon suit she had enough protection against nugget’s malfunctions. when she had the robot restrained in the crook of her elbow she handed him back the remote for his drone. at least, that’s what she assumed it was for ? she hadn’t dealt in drone tech since nugget was created, was a little bit rusty. ‘ ‘m cammie. this ‘ere’s nugget. sorry ‘bout tha’. little guy’s been short circuiting all day and it took me until now ta figure out they’re doin’ the exact opposite of what i want ‘em to. the program keep me busy as ‘ell so ah should be usin’ this free time ta fix ‘em ‘stead o’ runnin’ around causin’ a mess. ’

union traitor offers little in way of conversational skill, a preference for silence that is, perchance, what offers sufficient grounds for scotswoman’s impressive chatter. a barrage of questions / a baffling display of unrestrained curiosity in that not even seconds are granted between to allow the briefest of words in, the momentary quiet that spans between youth and patience little more than measured caution should break be nothing more than a well needed pause between ramblings
❛ nineteen days ❜ comes eventual reply, a calm way of speech as antithesis to blonde’s rapid fire, addressing each in order that they were asked ❛ as far as i’m aware ❜ present, admittedly confined within their infirmary, before doctor and fellow recruits, before last minute admission into exclusive program, kept under pretence of medical concern. she knew better ❛ i don’t ❜ a lie. she knows more than let on, too observant in her quiet not to form reasonable deduction from the clues around her, rather, she has as much care for his turbulent past as she does their military cuisine ❛ … it is serviceable ❜
‘ only nineteen days ? how long’d it take the doc ta get ya ‘ccustomed to your holon ? ‘re ya always in the infirmary ? ah try ta take a walk about whenever ah can bu’ chase keeps tellin’ me not ta ‘till i’ve been here for a bi’ longer. ’ hackeress paid no mind to any answer that could be a simple brush off, it wasn’t as if it was the first time she’d been met with the telltale suggestion of conspiracy. this was a military base, cammie assumed secrets ran amok. whatever she could gain, whether it was truth, lie, half truth, could be used to filter through the information later. ‘ honestly s’not as bad as i though’ it’d be, had gruel ten times worse anyway, but ‘s still not gonna stop me from hackin’ into vendin’ machines. this specific gen : lock diet recc’d to us to keep our brain’s functionin’ feels like there’s no sugar in it. girl’s gotta ‘ave her skittles, ah mean. ’ she paused a second to readjust the position of nugget in her hood, sea green eyes widening when it dawned on her. ‘ i’m so sorry — ‘m such a fuckin’ ditz. i never asked fer yer name ! ‘m cammie. guess ah got caught up with someone actually willin’ ta talk back, y’know ? ’ no. now that she thought about it, she assumed they didn’t know. they seemed to be the kind of person who could find her answers without making a right fool of themselves, but to each their own.
#bledwings#honestly ! that's fine !!#i'm not used to having such a talkative character but i wanted to take on the challenge#she's just happy to be making friends#even if it's one sided

Cammie’s Isolation - Perspective Framing In Gen:LOCK’s “Training Daze”
Something I noticed upon third viewing of the episode and immediately wanted to talk about is the way Gen:LOCK’s fourth episode, “Training Daze”, cleverly makes use of subtle perspective framing to highlight Cammie and her isolation from the rest of the team. Not only that, but throughout these moments that otherwise don’t seem particularly important, she is constantly trying to break that isolation.
While the team is shown to struggle on the same level in some capacity in the day-to-day through the cut of them eating together, it’s chiefly Cammie’s difficulties that are given attention. Even in the first scene, she’s rudely woken up (seriously, that fall must’ve stung like a bitch) and then left behind to catch up on her own as the rest of the team moves on without her. This is initially funny, but while the repeated occurrence is played for laughs, it’s also one that’s completely pitiable, as it does get to the point where Cammie starts wearing her armor when she sleeps so that she won’t slow them down in the morning.
We’re shown Cammie’s reaction in particular when the team realizes Kazu’s making breakfast for himself, and it’s clearly disheartened. She’s not just feeling the separation herself; she can recognize that the team in its entirety is disjointed, and it disappoints her.
Likewise, when Kazu eventually does share with her and then the rest of the team, her response is one of surprise and genuine happiness. This change is small, reflected as a baby step in terms of the team’s care for each other and a recognition of shared struggles - a “hey, we’re all in this together” - but Cammie clearly appreciates it nonetheless.
As an aside, kudos to Gen:LOCK’s editing staff and writers, as this is very naturally shown as the training montage progresses.
The episode also pays careful attention to setting up Cammie’s inexperience and general nervousness in combat. She cowers often, fires blindly at Val/entina when she’s startled, and sits out of what we see of the hand-to-hand exercise completely. It couldn’t be more obvious that this is all new for her; she’s a cyber-analyst, not a soldier like Val/entina or Kazu.
This means, as well, that she can be seen looking to the rest of the group for her cues, both in training and out of it, but is still often left behind. The best examples of this are when Weller dismisses the team after a day of training, and again when everyone is in the Ether, which I’ll get to in a minute.
Cammie’s moment to shine in the episode is her conversation with Migas, where the audience can see where her true strength lies; in tech. She’s the first one to ‘mix’ - or, project a hologram of herself - from her Holon, for the simple reason that she sees Julian doing it all the time and wants to try it. In similar fashion, she shows a clear interest in improving the Holons, both for her own sake - I do believe she sees herself as a liability or, at least, hindrance in combat as a result of her inexperience compared to the others - and for the others, as indicated in her excitement when Migas tells her about his plans for Julian’s upgrades.
She may not be comfortable with fighting, but she can recognize where she’s having a difficulty that might be fixed, and she’s more willing to engage with the project outside simple combat in comparison to Kazu or Val/entina.
Worth mentioning here is the conversation itself, and the friendship I hope they develop between Migas and Cammie. He doesn’t brush her off, treat her like a kid or downplay her enthusiasm; instead, he takes her interest in stride and encourages it, offering a solution to her balance issues with her Holon and giving her the software to start working on a more comfortable design (implying he’d be willing to help her change the entire structure of her Holon). Likewise, Cammie listens to him as authority and trusts his answer.
This would definitely be A+ BROTP material and I am here for these adorkable nerds.
It becomes clear after this, however, that the rift between Team Gen:LOCK likely isn’t going to go away any time soon. When the group has downtime, Cammie jumps at the chance to have them all spend it together, suggesting they have some fun playing video games as a team. She’s immediately rebuffed, not once, but twice, and even when she does get them to agree, she ends up having to pull them all together, only to have them disperse anyways.
To his credit, Julian does stay behind, but Cammie is still clearly frustrated with the situation. She wants them to be a team, but as Miranda says earlier in the episode, “They have raw talent as individuals, but refuse to trust or communicate”.
All of this works beautifully, because it’s not especially emphasized, but it is there. Cammie’s isolation is built up over the course of the episode, so when she is fully on her own and in a dire situation, it comes to a head. We feel her fear because she’s been alone this whole time and here she is, cut off from the team in every sense and quite literally being ripped apart.
Subtlety in storytelling almost never fails to bring about some brilliance. Much as I want to wrap Cammie in a blanket and give her the strongest drink I own, I can also fully appreciate the time and care taken to set up and execute this wonderful narrative through-line.
If this is any indication of Gen:LOCK’s characterization going forward, count me as ecstatic.

sparks ignited , nerves like static kicked body into defense as she turned to the voice. she certainly wasn’t expecting this kind of an welcome committee. sizing up the girl , she saw she was unarmed &. harmless. ( for the most part. ) weapon pointed at the blonde , she withdrew it. however , there was still caution humming in her fingertips to not let her guard down. eyebrows drew together , frown painted across visage. it was getting more &. more dangerous as time passed. they were quite a large group to be out in the open. mind bled with the longing to rest without stress that she would be back in her father’s presence sooner than she desired , ❛ ——— why should i trust that you won’t lead us to the authorities ? or my father. ❜ tone edged with blades &. skepticism.
running around military bases for over three years would eventually desensitise one to weapons being pointed at her person, moreso now that cammie was attending atlas academy. her expression of glee didn’t shift or change one bit in the face of the weapon, but the hackeress did lose the fangirl - ish edge to her bright - eyed grin. ‘ ‘s honestly no skin off my back ‘f ya don’ wanna accept miss schnee. the atlesian science division ain’t aligned with yer pa though, an’ we act independently from the military. ’ cammie pointed in the direction she was heading, a rather large building, but hidden amongst the infrastructure of the mantlese city. ‘ we got a little hovel where we conduct some minor experiments over here. s’nothing like our labs up on the plateau but the bunkers where we keep the test subjects ain’t too bad. ’

kazu.
Kazu nodded to confirm the words she repeated. He too remembered Madrani’s rather vague explanation about the armor, probably done to avoid too many questions from the newbies. Tilting his head at her question, kazu tried to think if he had noticed anything else weird about the suits. At moment nothing stood out to him but now that he had time to think about it there was something else. “Anata ga kidzuita ka dō ka yoku wakarimasenga, madorāni wa kare o osotta. Soshite dangan wa kare ni chotto tsumazuita dakedeshita. Mata watashi no atama wa bodīsūtsu ga kabā shinakatta yuiitsu no bashodeshita, soshite sore wa hontōni mada itai yuiitsu no bashodesu.”
if they were omitting any information from them cammie wouldn’t be impressed. she had no intention of jumping into experimental research without as much information as she could get her techie little hands on. she’d already realised the surplus of extra info available just by hacking into the security systems using the suit protocol alone, if they were hiding something digitised, then she was guaranteed to find it. ‘ righ’, so i was thinkin o’ the battle specific parts ‘o the armour, ‘sides the brain box - sync up bit. y’ think they’re like this ‘cause people migh’ try ta attack us while we’re still in the pods ? ’ god, she did not like the idea of that. cammie was already a weak link, having been the only one on the team without a lick of combat experience. she’d be a sitting duck if that were the case.

‘ oh ! ’ she made a “ psht ” noise, waving the act of nonchalantly with a comically nonchalant stance. even still, though she acted as if it was no big deal, it was clear the young hackeress drank up the praise like like a dying flower craved sunlight. ‘ ye, nothin’ too special. ah mean, it’s jus’ a top secret military base, right ? made it li’eral child’s play — ’ oof. on second thought, maybe she was a better off watching her mouth. ‘ anyway, so uh ... di’ they ever find out wha’ happened to the bloke who was meant ta be par’ of the team ? the real sinclair ? ’
@cloudtechd liked for a starter!
“That was quick thinking with the panel,” Miranda gave the younger woman a soft smile, trying to seem as friendly as she could, though her body was laden with signs of stress and worry.
“Chase told me the other day–you…hacked the alarms, right?”

blckandbruises.

Well, that limited his options severely. If Watts hadn’t been around, he might not have kept his files up to date. Cobalt hadn’t even lifted Glaive Lilac, but immediately dropped any intent of being more rough with his interrogation. She was just a kid, after all (weren’t they all). “I was speaking literally,” Cobalt said, approaching one of the lab computers, “I’m the reason Dr. Watts was disgraced. I’m the rogue experiment that got away.” He brushed a finger along the screen. “What do you know about violating a fifteen-bit encryption on a data cloud?”
‘ listen mate, even if i could take ya at yer word like some gullible lil’ twit, ain’t the kinda info you should be spreadin’ out in the open like tha’. ’ this was, after all, an atlesian research base. cammie might’ve been the only one in this corner of the research labs but that didn’t mean they didn’t have more bugs and listening devices scattered around the place than they claimed. who were “ they ” you might ask ? it could have been anyone to be honest. the government. those working against the government. she found it laughable how many enemies the council had made in only the last few years alone. she laughs, disbelieving and amused at his question, looking around first to make sure she was out of range of the security cameras. ‘ ha, issat a joke ? ol’ ironwood keepin’ tabs on me ta make sure i don’ play ‘round in the military’s data files again ? ’ even though her voice was notably negative, when cammie locked eyes with cobalt she was nodding her head : a clear “ yes, i can, but i can’t do it here. ” ‘ almos’ lost my atlas scholarshop once, buddy, can’t risk it again. ’

dr. weller.
“ohh, it’s only lethal without gen:LOCK compatibility!” weller quickly assures her. it seems the doctor doesn’t pick up on sarcasm well, and he’s already weighing whether or not to explain to her in a bit further detail the fact that she’s already been confirmed for compatibility, but he ends up deciding not to.
at her request, weller laughs, leading her into the lab behind them. “can i trust you won’t be making off with any of my dirty little secrets?” he jokes, laughing to himself. “it’s a fairly simple system, basic neuroscience meeting electrical engineering and programming. i’m sure you could figure it out in no time.” he stops before the holon pods and spins around to face her.
“though i must add, there aren’t really going to be ‘first’ and ‘last’ for your initial test run of the holons. ideally you’ll all be going at once!” he claps his hands together, smiling brightly.
‘ no offence, doc, but seein’ is believin’. ’ hackeress had already surmised that chase was in one of the pods, but until she saw someone else step inside without their insides cooking like popcorn, she’d hold off for now. they’d been briefed, somewhat, on the specifications concerning the gen: lock program, and it went without saying that they’d most likely choose someone more qualified than cammie if they had a choice. like special agent not - sinclair. she doesn’t have any reason to mistrust the doctor yet, but she didn’t have any reason to trust him either.
still, she perked up in a smile when he joked at her. she opened up so easily to humour, to kindness. he had to know that was an overestimation of her abilities right ? cammie bent down to inspect them. she’d probably have a better view from the inside admittedly. ‘ hey, doc ? d’y’know what happened t’ the real sinclair ? also, how’d ya find out that it would fry their brains if they weren’t genetically compatible ? ’ she could only assume the answer ; that not all science was pretty and marvellous. mistakes were made, sacrifices too. they were still experimenting.
