Rex Salazar (Omniverse ver.)

I tried to complete the fundraiser in place of my dear friend and hero by fan designing an Omniverse version of Rex. However, Derrick's approach would have been a lot different from this. Rex’s original design was too bland to him, so he would’ve taken a lot more drastic take instead. 

The idea was that Rex is now somewhere between his original form and full Omega form as he’s much more experienced with nanites.

Remembering Derrick J Wyatt

My username is clover-karin, and I’m a Ben 10 fan artist who’s also a friend of Derrick J Wyatt. I was lucky enough to get invited by Jae Hong King, one of the Omniverse directors, to the CN Studio and met Derrick in person for the first time. 

As I mentioned, I'm just a mediocre fan artist, so I didn't have that many chances to see him in person. I've shared some story about him on Twitter as his friend and an avid Ben 10 fan. I think everybody should read this thread because he was often demonized by many Ben 10 “fans” especially on tumblr. I really want you guys to learn what he was truly like.

The idea was to combine the characteristics of her counterparts from every iteration altogether. So she's more like 13 year old here. Not as young as the reboot counterpart, but not as old as the classic version, either.

“Can we stop calling [children’s cartoon show] a show for kids now?”

Can you stop being so fucking embarrassed about watching a children’s cartoon? Can you accept the fact that you fall outside the show’s marketed demographic and that’s perfectly okay? Can you realize that mature themes exist in children’s cartoons too and doesn’t automatically make them for adults only?

I redesigned Queen Bee for Biodendron, my personal reboot project. There are actually two queen bee villains in the franchise; the one from the reboot (2016) and one of the Korean comic series. So I combined their designs and made them one villain. I also designed her after wild beehives and termite queens. Queen Bee will appear as one of boss characters in the first game of Biodendron.

Albedo is supposed to make his debut much later, but I just made a quick sketch of his early design for fun.

An unpopular opinion about Reboot Gwen’s “superpower”

Many fans seem to be complaining that Reboot Gwen doesn’t have any superpowers unlike her classic counterpart. While I’d love to see her getting more chances to fight villains on her own, I’m not a huge fan of her being a part-Anodite because I personally prefer pure magic over alien mana lol 

Plus, this is supposed to be a reboot, so it doesn’t have to the exact same as the classic continuity. Just like how Reboot Kevin has his own Omnitrix instead of being an energy-absorbing mutant. And the RB crew confirmed that the Antitrix was originally based on one of the unused idea for Kevin 11, so I was thinking maybe we could do something similar with Reboot Gwen, too.   

Classic!Gwen originally didn’t have any superpower, either, until she got Charmcaster’s spell book. Before the episode A Change of Face, her main abilities were her wits, martial arts skills, and brilliance in technology.  She often used her personal laptop for research, and sometimes she received special gadgets to help her cousin. 

Reboot Gwen is also the brain of Ben’s team and a skilled martial artist, so maybe her new “power“ could be about technology ---- especially because the idea of Gwen being a tech wiz hasn’t been used anymore in the classic continuity since UAF. 

And this idea of Gwen dealing with technology isn’t totally out of place because we’ve already seen RB Gwen using her smartphone and tablet to search for any information that would help Ben. She also received various gadgets to temporarily fight along with him and their grandfather in the show.  

So instead of giving her a completely new power, we could expand this idea further. RB Gwen still wouldn’t have any superpower, but she’d permanently get her personal weapon instead and join a fight more often. We’ve already seen Rook and his Proto-Tool, so I think this idea could work quite well.  

The most probable option here would be a powered armor as we’ve already seen Gwen getting one in Roundabout. Although I wasn’t too fond of the design, but I did like the idea. Too bad it was only used once.

Speaking of a powered armor, I feel like Gwen was the one who really should’ve gotten the Glitch armor in the movie. It was originally meant for Ben, but both Ben and Kevin already have their watches. And Gwen and Glitch seem to get along with each other quite well in the show. They even worked together to solve a problem in episodes like Vinn Diagram.

Plus, we’ve already seen Future Gwen in her battle suit working with Hitch together to fight the Xerge in Ben 100,10. We know that Glitch can be resurrected with a proper repair, and she didn’t show any magical superpower. 

I know the future changes all the time in Ben 10, but giving Gwen a superweapon does sound more natural than giving her a magical power at this moment.

----Or she could get some kind of energy field generator just like the one from Alien X-tinction, too. This would make a nice nod to her classic counterpart’s Anodite power. But she’d be still a regular human child, so she’d be able to fully enjoy her ordinary life with her family. 

If the next Ben 10 series is really a RB sequel, I’d love to see Gwen in action more. But at the same time, I wish the writers would still remember the main characters are all kids who want to have fun! After all, that was one of the best things about the reboot.

Okay, but what if there was a spin-off where Bens from all series live together as a pseudo-family.

It’s very unlikely I’m gonna actually complete this because I can’t draw a thing right lately. Also, I just didn’t draw OV Ben’s Omnitrix here because I felt so lazy.

About Reboot Ben and Kevin’s designs

This is basically just a repost of my 1-year-old tweet, but I think this is interesting to mention again. I noticed that Reboot Ben has a similar hairstyle to Kenny. Also, RB Ben’s skin color was slightly darker in his early concept art.  

Similarly, I noticed RB Kevin looks a lot like Devlin when he ties his hair or covers his head with his hood. Kevin tied his hair when he lost his memory and mistook himself for a “good guy,” and he covered his head when he was siding with the Tennysons in What Rhymes with Omnitrix? And Devlin was practically the first “hero” version of Kevin in the entire franchise!

So I wonder if such similarities were intentional. If the crew totally meant that, it kinda makes sense because Reboot! Ben and Kevin were successors to their OS counterparts in a way. It’s very likely these were just purely coincidental, but I still think it’s such a fun, cute idea.

A Random Headcanon about Reboot Ben

The reason why Reboot Ben hasn’t unlocked any dog-like aliens yet is because his pupper energy is so strong it’s off the charts already. 

I mean…

He plays tug with his cousin.

He bites and shakes stuffs.

He howls.

He wore the cone of shame.

He sits like a dog.

He keeps getting headpats.

He’s already a pupper even without the watch, so the Omnitrix chose Rath instead to balance things out.

Okay, so this design is not gonna be used anymore. We decided to postpone the project for now because I'm seriously worried about the person I was trying to help right now. But thank you all for the feedback and attention.

I think people would just assume she’s Ben’s sister or cousin at first, but they would eventually find out because of all those paparazzi lol Besides, Ben is pretty bad at keeping secrets. 

But yeah, Ben would definitely use it to take a little break from being famous until people learn the truth. Even after that, he might use the watch to turn himself into a girl sometimes and casually hang out with other girls. The gender switch feature would definitely help Ben understand girls a bit better. After all, putting the user in others’ shoes is the whole point of the Omnitrix!

Apparently, the Omnitrix also has an option to change its user’s gender. Or maybe they’re just from alternate universes. Whichever you’d prefer lol

My headcanon is that Ben probably wouldn’t make a huge deal out of turning into a girl even if he got access to the gender switch feature, unlike how most of the fanarts portray him. He turns into aliens all the time, and compared to all those freaky Omnitrix transformations, turning into just a girl would feel like almost no change to him. 

I do like the idea of him becoming genderfluid, though!
