mini-fic throwback to that post I made in January about Uta being unable to function in the cold (because it's finals week and I too am struggling to function)

"Are you sure we can't--" Uta shudders so hard he just about drops the pencil in his hand, "turn on the heater?"

Renji hums sympathetically, turning the page of his book. "I know it sucks, but we can't afford a massive bill right now. We'll just have to deal for a little longer."

"Why can't we just ask Ken to help us pay it? He can afford it."

That gets Renji to look up, face twisted in a scowl. "No."

"Why not?"

"I'm not bumming money off my nephew. Besides, he and Touka already have their hands full, what with the baby--"

"Yeah, yeah," Uta huffs, giving up on sketching in favor of pouting. He tries to look like he's crossing his arms in indignation, but really he's just hugging himself for warmth. It's irritating how unaffected Renji is by all this--a sweatshirt and long pants are all he needs to be comfortable.

Although....

Uta feels his lips curl in a grin. "Know what? Fine. You're the one who has to deal with me like this, anyway."

Renji hums again. "What do you--Uta, what are you doing?"

Uta flings his cardigan aside, shivering. In nothing but a tank top, Renji can see the hair on his arms stand up from the cold.

It's the only warning Renji gets before Uta pounces on him.

"What're you--shit, your hands are like ice!" Renji shudders, shifting uncomfortably as Uta lifts his sweatshirt and wriggles beneath it.

"And whose fault is that?" comes the muffled reply. Uta's arms wrap around Renji's waist, holding him like a teddy bear as he buries his face in his chest.

Despite the inconvenience--it's going to be impossible to read, now--Renji can't help the endeared smile on his face. "Love, you're gonna suffocate like this."

"Ah, but what a way to go."

"Uta."

Uta whines, tightening his grip. Renji sighs, hand resting on his husband's head from the outside of the shirt. They stew in the silent impasse for a few moments, but as always, Renji is the first to relent.

"Okay," he murmurs. "Tell you what: if you go get the blankets off our bed, we can bundle up here and have a movie night. Whatever you wanna watch."

Uta shifts just enough that a red eye peeks out from the collar of the shirt. "The Legend of Vox Machina."

Renji frowns faintly. "Sweetheart, we just finished season three."

"Exactly. We go back to season one, binge as much as we can?"

"I don't have a choice, do I?"

"Unless you want me to stay here until March? No."

Renji chuckles. "Fine. Go on."

Uta wriggles out from under his sweatshirt with a low giggle and takes off down the hall.

Renji discards his book with a small sigh, hoping he won't have to mourn the warmth for long.
