The Poem that got Nelson Mandela through 27 years in Prison (and 12 Wisdom Quotes from Madiba himself).
The Poem that got Nelson Mandela through 27 years in Prison (and 12 Wisdom Quotes from Madiba himself).
Via elephant journal on Dec 5, 2013
Rest in the Peace you have earned and created, Madiba.
For more: 6 Inspiring Nelson Mandela Quotes.
95 years old, 27 of them in prison. He was born just after World War I and he lived to see a black man elected president of the USA.
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.”
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
If anyone’s interested in learning more about this mans life I highly recommend his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.
“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.” ~ Nelson Mandela
He truly lived his life by the poem that got him through prison:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
~ Invictus, by William Ernest Henley. Rest in the Peace you worked so hard and with such good cheer to create, Madiba.

When a Facebook Question Made My Day

The Time When a Facebook Question Made My Day
I was literally beaming as I stood there in the family room telling my wife about what happened to me at work. No, the boss didn't pat me on the back or give me a raise or anything like that. Rather, I posted a question on the company Facebook page and got a lot of responses. That's why I was so happy. (It's the "little things" that make a social media specialist's day.) And it's not like I hadn't tried it before - using the Facebook question polling app - except I didn't get much interaction on previous attempts. And so I was a little leery about trying it again. (Yeah, rejection is a big issue even online. "Will anyone respond?" Isn't that something about us?) Despite my fears I moved forward. And I crafted my question (like the gurus tell you to) with my audience in mind (REALTORS®) and leaving lots of breathing room "between the lines." My question: Do you think it's okay for a homeowner to walk away from their home (loan)? (Click on the link or picture above to add your vote and response. "Like" us, too, while you're at it. Okay?) The question was definitely contemporary, thought provoking (agree?) and would reach into the hearts of people (at the level of their values and philosophies of life). And so it had all the earmarks of potential success. My next step was to ask the question of all my Broker's friends on his friends page. (I manage the site for him.) Facebook allows you to do that, but it's a little tedious since you have to choose one by one. My last step was to close my eyes. (Not really.) Instead, I kept them open and was pleasantly surprised as the emails began rolling in. The poll results: 22 "yes" versus 11 "no" (at the time of this post). There were 26 comments. (To each one who took the time I "thank you" very much.) And so this is the time when a Facebook question made my day. (Not a Facebook question, but fellow real estate professionals responding to it made my day.) My plan going forward is to post a question maybe every other week (again, the gurus tell you to not overdo it). Do you think you might give a Facebook question a try (if you haven't already)? Keeping Your Smile
Our smile will bring happiness to us and to those around us. Even if we spend a lot of money on gifts for everyone in our family, nothing we buy could give them as much happiness as the gift of our awareness, our smile. And this precious gift costs nothing. At the end of a retreat in California, a friend wrote this poem: I have lost my smile, but don't worry. The dandelion has it. If you have lost your smile and yet are still capable of seeing that a dandelion is keeping it for you, the situation is not too bad. You still have enough mindfulness to see that the smile is there. You only need to breathe consciously one or two times and you will recover your smile. The dandelion is one member of your community of friends. It is there, quite faithful, keeping your smile for you. --Thich Nhat Hanh--
