confession: two weeks ago my friends got sick of me slowly cooking to death in my self-pitying emotional soup of heartbreak, took me out for drinks, and installed a dating app on my phone. we are all in the same degree at uni (i'm 25 + i promise this is relevant), in a faculty that is extremely quaint and mostly comprised of academics married to people with normal jobs. two years ago a teacher-couple joined our program's faculty, a fact that caused a minor riot within the teaching staff, who thought it was unfair to give two of four tenured jobs to a couple... unfortunately for them both of these profs are extremely beloved among the students and very good teachers at that. even if you've never taken classes from either of them, you know about this couple and probably whatever rumors are going around about them too. i've taken classes w/ both.

anyway. back to me on the dating app in the bar with my friends, pretty drunk, swiping though my bumble suggestions. for extra fun, we have set the minimum age to 30 and the gender to include "both" even though i am a lesbian. the whole table is viciously tearing down dating profiles, investigating their pictures, etc. i go to the bar to get another round for the group, am about to pay for our drinks when i hear a virtual SHRIEK from our corner. i get back, dish our drinks out. my phone is in the middle of the table, untouched by anyone like it's a cursed object. i look at the screen. it's them, our teacher couple. they have a shared dating profile, stating that they are "looking for someone to explore her bisexuality with". lesbian readers will know that this is not exactly an uncommon profile type to find, but still, seeing it from people who have taught basically everything you know about 19th century literature is... quite something. so naturally i decide to swipe right before anyone can stop me.

maia, i am so proud to report: i fucked that man's wife, she was absolutely lovely, and we will see each other again, and i am currently taking another class from her husband where the vibe is more than chill. my friends have been sworn to secrecy, but i know it's only a matter of time before someone slips up and the rumor mill starts churning... but who cares? i haven't thought about my ex since!

Same here! And re: "you don't need to play HK to play Silksong", I'm finding that a) because Hornet is so mysterious in HK, even the context from HK is so limited that everything I've learned so far functions as completely independent info, and b) because Hornet has a different moveset, having played HK is actually fucking with my muscle memory for some of the controls. There might be a learning curve for new players, but you won't be fighting any ingrained instincts.

So I’ve been playing Silksong and here are some thoughts with 0 spoilers:

-It’s great so far.

-The music? Good. The lore? Cool? The combat? Just the right amount of challenging.

-Something I like about the game is it essentially goes “you loved Hollow Knight? What if we made Hollow Knight again but with a different story and some new mechanics?” And I go “hell yeah that sounds great sign me the fuck up.”

-You do not need to play Hollow Knight to play this game but there will be a learning curve for new players. This isn’t a bad thing, more a warning to new players that you will die a lot and that’s fine.

can we talk about how garnet most likely got the story of the rebel hero rose quartz and the cruel pink diamond that created her from rose herself and how pink is described as a coward, cruel, wicked. and how rose told greg it's good he doesn't know anything about her. and how rose felt like she owed greg a list of everything shed ever done wrong. and how rose didn't tell pearl anything about what she did because she couldn't bear to lose that love. and how rose didn't think how her actions would effect pearl and in trying to destroy the part of herself that she felt did nothing but hurt and ruin everything and deserved to die, she hurt one of the people she loved the most. can we talk about the fact rose is a self fulfilling prophecy and destroyed herself twice. once asking pearl to kill pink diamond. and then by having steven. and how both times, it was out of love for change and hatred for herself. and wanting there to be someone better in her wake. and out of fear of what she'd done. and how at the end of the day her story is a tragedy because she believed everyone could change and become a better person. the only exception she had ever made on that was for herself. because she knew she used to be a horrible person and the one thing that scared her more than anything was the fact she didn't know how to fix it. so she didn't. she ended it all, and she prayed that the child in her wake would be a better person. because she, fundamentally, thinks she's irredeemable. and the only good thing she could do now was give her life to someone that deserved it.

can we talk about the fact that rose fucking quartz would rather die than try to confront the people she hurt because she thinks the only thing that'd do would hurt them more. and she can never learn to see the good she did as well. because all she thinks she does is hurt.

can we talk about the fact that rose isn't a twist villain, she's a fucking twist tragedy. oh my god. this fucking SHOW.

Reading: Dandadan! I've been really enjoying the anime and, as I did with Dungeon Meshi, I'm binge-reading the manga to get ahead. The further I get the more I appreciate how it balances its very consistent core themes of "everyone deserves unconditional compassion" and "the only person whose actions you can control are your own, so be the best version of yourself" with being a rowdy action comedy about a delinquent using her psychic powers to help a geek find his nuts after he lost them getting possessed by a ghost.

Listening: The song of the day is Curious Hands, by Kuinka! An excellent song for characters who feel like they're too much and are finding it hard to change. "... Oh, I've got a good spine / But I've come to find / No logic or love can keep me in line / And I've tried / Oh, I've tried..."

Watching: I got to see Kiki's Delivery Service in theaters this weekend and it ruled. One of my all time favorite movies and I'm so happy I got to see it on the big screen.

Playing: I've been playing through Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney! It's very good. I forgot how obnoxious (affectionate) everyone in case 4-2 is, and I especially forgot that Klavier Gavin's shoes have monogrammed soles. What the fuck are you doing, buddy.

Bracing: I have to file taxes in the next couple weeks and I'm absolutely dreading it.

Anticipating: Silksong tomorrow, Borderlands 4 in a couple weeks, new episodes of several shows incoming, visiting family next week, and in a couple weeks a good friend will be coming home after a long trip, and I'm excited to see her again!
