🇺🇸huge ongoing recalls of 🦐shrimp🦐 due to insanitary conditions that led to contamination with ☢️cesium-137☢️🇺🇸

...or in other words, these are the 'radioactive shrimp' recalls. and there are a lot of them, there will absolutely be more, and it is NOT just walmart!

and the kicker, as always: the FDA is still trying to track down the shrimp that needs to be recalled. they have not even found it all yet. recalls are still being announced. this was a HUGE supplier of shrimp!

might want to avoid shrimp in the US right now.

this post is going to be long either way, so I (rune) am going to summarize the situation so everyone is on the same page first. this one gets a little confusing. check the advisory for more details.

pt. bahari makmur sejati (doing business as BMS foods) is an indonesian shrimp importer. they sell a lot of different types of shrimp to a lot of different brands across the US. frozen, refrigerated, raw, cooked, tail-on, tail-off, breaded, etc. their shipping containers at four separate US ports tested positive for cesium-137, which is radioactive. the FDA then found cesium-137 in some of their shrimp. this all led to an investigation that found pt. bahari makmur sejati/BMS foods packed, prepared, and/or held their food in insanitary conditions that may make their products dangerous beyond just the potential of being mildly radioactive.

all their products have now been barred from sale in the US until the cause of contamination has been identified and addressed. the levels of radioactivity in the shipping containers and shrimp were relatively low, but the ideal amount of cs-137 in shrimp is zero. as of august 29 2025, from the advisory page:

At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. marketplace.

so there has been no confirmation that any radioactive shrimp actually got sold in the US, but it does not necessarily mean that all shrimp currently on shelves got tested first. radioactive or not, this shrimp violated safety regulations, and the FDA recommends it all get recalled.

and now, onto the recalls. this recall list is 'current' as of august 29, 2025 (see note below). these recalls all have different formats so bear with me here. recalls not listed as enforcement report have pictures of the recalled products in their recall links.

southwind foods LLC recall of sand bar, arctic shores, best yet, great american, and first street brand frozen shrimp sold to retailers, distributors, and wholesalers in alabama, arizona, california, massachusetts, minnesota, pennsylvania, utah, virgina, and washington state between july 17 2025 and august 8 2025.

sand bar bags are clear with a bright purple label at the top. best yet bags are blue on top and red on the bottom. arctic shores bags are red on top and white-ish on the bottom. some great american seafood imports bags are blue on top, clear in the middle, and blue on the bottom. other great american seafood imports bags are black on the top, clear in the middle, and black on the bottom. first street bags are blue on top, clear in the middle, darker blue (or purple?) on the bottom, and with a big pink horizontal band towards the bottom.

in regards to this list being 'current', recalls are typically published by the FDA in two ways: recalls with press releases, and in the enforcement report. recalls with press releases are published within a day or two of being announced and also wind up in the enforcement report. recalls without press releases are usually only published in the enforcement report, and it can take days to sometimes months after a recall has been issued before that issue gets published in the enforcement report. as of when I am typing this, only recalls with press releases are listed on the main FDA shrimp advisory page.

the advisory page itself acknowledges that it is not a comprehensive list of all relevant shrimp recalls. so not only is this entire situation an ongoing slice of hell trying to track down the fucking shrimp, all of the recalled shrimp is not even being listed on the page made to list the shrimp recalls. that sucks! the enforcement report sucks a whole lot more to use than navigating recalls that have press releases.

but basically, I can only tell you about recalls that have been published, and there is no telling how long it will take for the FDA to publish every relevant shrimp recall.

whew, this is a lot! I do not expect everyone to read it all, but I wanted to make sure that everyone has the context needed to understand the basics of this radioactive shrimp situation and how to navigate it.

it sucks that the FDA is not actually listing every recall on the advisory page. sure would be cool if they changed their minds and actually did that. and just to emphasize, the levels of radioactivity were pretty damn low. even if you do eat radioactive shrimp, which you should NOT try to do on purpose (please.), this is not an instant cancer or mass death situation or anything. but the circumstances that led to the shrimp becoming radioactive mean that shrimp and other products from pt. bahari makmur sejati (BMS foods) may be dangerous in other ways.
