An excerpt from a little story I am making

A few days ago I had an idea for a story and it has been festering ever since, so I began typing it up today, this is still a rough draft there has been little to no editing and absolutely no peer review so please leave feedback if you have any, enjoy.

Once upon a time on a planet not so unlike your own there was a little, seemingly insignificant, human named Sam. Sam was broke, they could barely keep their minimum wage job which, little to Sam’s knowledge, they would be fired from in three weeks. Say reader, why don't you get to know them?

 “Ugh, couldn't get more than three hours of sleep again.” Sam groaned, rising from their cardboard-like mattress on the ground to get to work with a little over two and a half hours of sleep. Putting on their white shirt, green apron, and matching green hat (a clearly top of the line uniform) Sam set off to walk to the shabby convenience store almost forgetting their left shoe on the way out the door.

 Now I forgot to mention something about Sam’s world… it has magic, not magic that they know how to harness without intensive machinery, but magic nonetheless, oh but why is our amazing narring only bringing it up now you ask? Well, that's simple, on their way to work Sam saw a flyer for volunteers to be used as “totally not test subjects” for a brand new, totally legal, and safe procedure. Now how does this perfectly inconspicuous advertisement fall into this story you ask? It doesn’t, as Sam passes it by without a second thought.

 Finally clocking into work 15 minutes late after a scolding from their manager Sam sits at the register for eleven hours only moving from there when sent on an errand from their manager that is totally in their job description and not part of the other three employee’s jobs, and for a thirty minute lunch break. This has been every day for Sam for the past four months, and the next three weeks… at which point they were promptly fired for “poor performance,”. With barely enough money to not starve to death, and only being able to stay in their shitty apartment because their landlord likes them, Sam is desperate… and unable to get a job.

Remember that flyer I mentioned? Yeah, I forgot to add something volunteers get $5,000 just for undergoing the procedure…how generous of them. Now having passed that flyer everyday for a little over three weeks now Sam is quite familiar with it, they only passed it up because they assumed their organs were going to get harvested or something and what's left of him to get thrown into a trash heap. So, Sam finally decided he was desperate enough to become a volunteer, with $3.45 to their name Sam showed up to a surprisingly clean, matte white warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Also, I lied about that flyer not being important to the plot, as without it you would just watch this sad, poor, human starve to death… well you might still, but not yet at least.
