boring: the characters in severance are age regressors

interesting and cool: severance opens up an entirely new approach to aging/maturity/mental age in which the innies are simultaneously their bodily age and baby/toddler aged, meaning their regression is different from what we (irl regressors) experience but has some interesting overlap to explore!!!

tw: basically all the themes in severance but specifically within the context of age regression, which might hit close to home. also severance s2 spoilers

like. they have muscle memory of being adults and growing up but no actual memory of it happening. they’re in a new context where they can explore childish things that their outie selves may have chosen to repress bc of societal norms

my favorite example is dylan with his perks!! his innie loves finding joy in small things and trinkets and lil toys and special events but his outie associates those things with unhealthy self-indulgence and self hate

lumon’s philosophy directly appeals to this side of them by giving things childish names (innies, outies, the ORTBO) and themes in general (the music dance experience, the melon thing, the posters, the stop motion video, the water tower mascot, i could go on). but they also use this as a weapon to dehumanise innies to the outside world (telling ricken they respond better to certain language etc. and how they talk about innies generally)

basically it’s SO INTERESTING because this makes innies reluctant to enjoy ‘childish’ things as they realize the full intentions behind them. this makes the choice to enjoy them anyway even more meaningful, even if it’s just them grasping at any small joy they can find!!!!!

and do not even get me started on miss huang.

What is this succession show I hear about so much and is it good. Enlighten me

succession is a show about a rich dysfunctional family. its set in new york city where the father owns a international media company, a company that his kids so desperately want for themselves. it’s a comedy drama with themes of trauma, its soooo good!! i will say that its a bit hard to get into at first because all the business talk is a little confusing in the beginning but after you get past that— it’s so good. one of my favorite things about it is the way they chose to film the show, they use a specific film that sorta ‘dances’ between each character. which makes the funny scenes funnier. (it’s kinda filmed like a documentary but it’s not.)

my flip!nicky nichols thoughts 💭:

i’m sorta basing this off of season 3 since that’s the season i’m rewatching rn :p i love nicky sm. these aren’t the best since i’ve never wrote oitnb agere before this but i hope its oki :)

nicky is both a regressor & caretaker. she is often seen with lorna, running her hand through her hair. she’s usually with her around bedtime. nicky doesn’t like to be overly ‘maternal.’ it sorta freaks her out. if she thinks too much of what she’s doing, she starts second guessing herself.

although she’s a little embarrassed of this side of herself, she does let a few people see this side of her. alex teased her the first time nicky told her what she does with lorna. but alex never judged her, told her that it was normal. (atleast that’s what piper told her.) piper thought it was cute, squealed even.

there’s not much you can do in prison as a caregiver, but nicky tries. she goes in line for breakfast/dinner and picks out what lorna wants to eat. she sometimes gets something from commissary for her.

but sometimes nicky is small. which is terrifying for her, really terrifying. she’s usually at a 7 year old head space but that’s enough for her to panic. alex tends to her when she’s small. piper is a bit annoying about it, “awe, alex, it’s like we have a kid.” alex stays with nicky throughout the day when she’s like this. she’s not overly affectionate, which nicky appreciates, but she makes silly jokes, encourages her to eat her ‘nasty’ veggies. times like this is when nicky kinda enjoys being small.

the other girls are silly with nicky too. making jokes that probably aren’t very appropriate for a 7 year old but funny nonetheless.

shiv’s grasp for control seems to always bite her back in the end. she can’t separate herself from what she puts on at waystar. months can go by and she won’t budge. until she’s screaming in roman’s face— or karolina’s— or anyone really. she’s throwing insults, she’s hoping someone hurts her. she’s similar to roman in that way. she feels the need to be ‘put’ in her ‘place.’ to not feel the humiliation of willingly regressing but being forced to. because that’s so so much better, isn’t it?

Succession idea- I don’t know if Ken would fit into it but Shiv & Rome both regress during the night at Austerlitz. They’re both probably a bit freaked out, fussy, and upset because of having been around Logan, and they both seek out Connor for comfort who has to try and get them back to sleep like he used to when they were kids.

I love this idea :D it would be difficult to include ken considering he was very very very high that ep… my ken.. but i love writing shiv & rome’s dynamic so much, especially since i feel like they get smaller (unknowingly) when they’re with each other :’)

i haven’t rewatched in soo long so i’d have to write this from what i remember from that ep but i’ll def consider this idea friend :D
