*squinting at last night's post with its interrupted middle sentence* oops. Meant to finish that but Matilda was doing her job VERY aggressively and made me go to bed and finish writing on mobile last night and I kind of forgot about it.

(I had pie and I think she reasoned that if she made me get up at the second bedtime alarm and go the fuck to bed, she could have a little bit of the crust. She was, in fact, correct about this—and to my mingled delight and chagrin, she refused to be bought off and frog marched me directly to the sink for toothbrushing.)

training log 3/23/2024

problem: when walking on leash, mimic pulls, zigzags around me, and stops to sniff things

goal: mimic walks beside me, doesn't stop to sniff unless released, and checks in with me every once in a while

plan:

take a step back, recognize that she's an 8 month old puppy who is starting to go through hormonal changes. go back to basics: reinforce handler engagement, recharge her markers, practice impulse control.

take her out and let her drag her long line. start walking around in erratic circles. whenever she looks at me, mark and reward.

slowly raise the bar for getting a reward. first, she just has to look at me. then, she has to take a step towards me. then, she has to actually come to me. finally, she has to walk by my side for a couple of steps.

once she is consistently choosing to walk beside me, add the "With Me" command. ("With Me" is different than "Heel" because "Heel" requires her to be intensely focused on me, whereas "With Me" allows her to look around and not be perfectly in position)

say "With Me" and take a step. if she moves with me, mark and reward. repeat, gradually increasing the number of steps before rewarding.

gradually add distractions and teach the behavior in different locations.

in the meantime:

start taking mimic and bernie out to potty separately, so that she has my undivided attention whenever she's on leash

keep walks short enough where she can be successful

use a harness instead of a collar whenever she's in a situation where she's not ready to succeed at loose leash walking, so that she doesn't get to practice pulling on her leash
