Tw fictional "racism" (specism?) and stereotyping i guess? I wrote this late at night with the thrill of angst so 🤷‍♂️ its just rapid fire thoughts

ok so, I've had this sitting in my drafts for days and days and days maybe weeks,and I'm verryyyy sorry about that 😩 I have no idea how to edit this to be more easy to read or feel like making art for it, but yehhh 👉👈 for the folks who wanted it

KEEP IN MIND, there isn't "predator and prey" dynamics. They HISTORICALLY view species less like race and more like "societal roles". Similar to how many cultures may see women/men, earthly and divine powers, nobility and working class, and etc. Aka "we need different kinds of people to make this work"

NOW ONTO THE HISTORIC SPECISM

Dogs irl are historically seen as good and loyal workers in a positive light, this could've been used as propaganda

Also I was thinking about cuteness from an evolutionary standpoint, and how each main group of species found their niche in a different way

For example with rabbits right? They're a smaller species buuuut excellent hearing is a great. They also can eat plants that other species can't eat.which means not only are they useful but they also require less of the food thats in high demand and can handle alternatives. They're historically good at developing areas and improving communities. So its like there's always an available role for em in alot of cultures.

Meanwhile for other species, its alot more competitive. And the thing is, bigger you are the more power you have. And if you aren't big, then you've gotta be some sort of native fauna that already has their place and their way to survive. You know, something special to prove yourself valuable or suited for your community/environment. So that leaves cats and dogs who, usually are brought with outside forces into a new location. They're generally a lot smaller.

This is where I was thinking about cuteness as an evolutionary gain. They are, quite literally, child sized yet adult minded.

Anyways, as for dog breeds I was thinking of the idea of a dog and their master. Not in the ownership sense. But in the same way there could be several families working for one estate or leader or etc. Especially since dogs are so specifically (and pridefully) bred to do One Specific Job.

However, as much as its propagated as a natural positive thing (a good worker) it also born phrases like sick as a dog or working like a dog and etc. Dogs were still seperate from main society and did either alot of laborious, hunting, rule enforcing, traveling, defense, sailor men, and etc jobs. Not real jobs of power, but ones of labor and dedication. Ones where the man in charge had the ability to punish the worker to various degrees.

Cats were more regulated to jobs requiring small people that couldn't die as easily (cough falling to death or places with alot of snakes) or jobs at night. Which definitely did push them more out of society and get them more associated with criminals or night life in general. Stuff like chimney sweeps, lookouts, night cleaners, night shift nurses, remote work near wilderness, and etc

Intentionally acting more docile was a thing for both species. Ur less likely to have ur boss beat the hell out of u (or as badly) if ur just a good lil guy. Ofc when there's multiple groups that all have a short end of a stick- (cough dogs and common cats) They're bound to have conflict, especially if they see the other one as faring better while they suffer.

("OH dogs get praised so much for all these things and we struggle with being seen as bad luck or 'rat eaters'" "Cats sleep all day and don't work as hard and still get to dress so nicely"... both are wild misunderstandings of groups with little interactions. It wasn't a norm everywhere ofc, but historically during hardship tensions like that rise and stereotypes persist in small ways)

However, cuteness and optimal examples of the "common working man" are very good sellers in media

Esp in "success" stories and etc

All dogs know how to beg 🥰 give the poor dog a bone 🥰 dog eat dog world (oh no… the people who can easily lose their livelihoods are competitive because of an exploitative system… how feral 😒) 🥰 dog days 🥰all bark no bite 🥰 mutt btch streetdog feral packs 🥰gone to the dogs etc etc 💅

Anyways cats and dogs have that historic thing where its like 2 oppressed groups that are kind sputter against eachother in alot of scenarios

Also for cats id also consider roof top jobs and servant jobs were more popular historically too cuz 1 cats can climb and don't die as easily if they fall. 2. Cats can be very quiet

Some stereotypes cats have had about dogs are associated with filthiness, aggression, kissing up to bosses, noisiness and etc

Some stereotypes dogs have had about cats is that they're unfriendly, uppity or tight, cheaters, untrustworthy, or materialistic

As for cuteness, things like playing dumb or docile (as well as physically developing more expressive and "cute" characteristics over time associated with certain bloodlines/breeds) are definitely a social survival skill. For dogs this could mean tilted heads big eyes, childlike innocence, being overly friendly and emotional with strangers, and etc. Esp in smaller more "cutesy" breeds

As for cats, the cuteness thing can look like their feet shifting in almost a kneeding motion, quiet behaviour, purring, and behaviours that suggest injury and trust,

It can be more subtle, and there's an element of scent to it as well

Both non normal noises and etc like yk, mrrps and whines and etc

Anyways it can either be purposeful or as a stress response, like fawning as a trauma response

just to clarify its inspired from g4 and is more rough exploration than final designs for some of them (some of these are a little old lol) i kinda have my own version of an mlp inspired universe in my head lol

idk what Peso is but I love him and he's very much a lil guy, I made Barnacles a caribou since I thought it fit better than yak lol. He has icy swirls on his antlers <3

I felt bat pony fit Kwazii best cuz yk, similarity to cats like the slit pupils and whatnot <3 you can't see it but his other wing is pretty torn, and I think he'd need a prosthetic to fly properly,which he only got a good one after joining the octonauts. Tweak is a deer, and I thought it'd fit cuz of the tail, ears, and how many deer live in the U.S.

Kelpie Shellington>:3 Scottish folklore need i say more <3 i didnt personally feel like the mlp comic design of kelpies fit him, so I basically just made a small water horse with a mossy back and kelp hair lol. Maybe he can absorb sunlight, fitting for the vegimals father

I wasn't quite sure which route to go for Dashi. My first thought was Earth pony, but the octonauts are really diverse and I wanted to show that yk? I really like the diamond dogs (there's alot more diamond dogs in the comic btw! They got such big paws for digging its adorable) And well she is a dog. But I did worry that it may feel odd (not because she's bipedal) because she may feel too close to her original design?

So I experimented with griffin Dashi as well, but I'm undecided as of now lol

Isome example of Kwaziis cutie mark, its meant to look like a sea map with the daggers he got when 12 in my au, the maps got some sea beasties, a simplified compass rose, an c on and island and, and what could be seen as a kraken- or the octopod. Its basically just meant to show his love of exploration and whatnot

I'm not sure if any of the others would have cutie marks, since they're not really ponies. If anyone else did, it's probably be Shellington, but even then he's really more of a horse than a pony so idk

They all do have magic inherent in them, but it typically displays as more nature/physical related abilities. -w-

Imagine, you're a penguin medic. You're not really trained for tooth extractions. You probably could if you really had to, but its not best. Your coworker, scientist, and dear friend ends up going to a dentist on land. Very well, but of course. Someone has to bring him back to what's essentially your giant octopus submarine house. And well. Who better than the medic to handle the "medical thing".

Thats all fine, you finally manage to drag your poor scientist friend back to your home with little issue other than him crying about how small the "land shrimp"(bugs) are. Cool 👍 Cool as your homeland, the antarctic even.

You decide hey! I'll offer him a cool treat. Yk, icecream or a popsicle! He is confused why you're offering him cold food. He is much more concerned with the fact he thinks his tongue is missing. (It is just numb)

You explain, well, it DOES taste very good and would help him feel better! He stays silent for a few minutes. And he says that he doesn't think he can eat cold penguin food. Because of course, he elaborate through very slurred and rambling speach (that is a bit hard to understand since he seems to have become 60% more Scottish), that penguins gotta eat the cold food cuz they live in the icebergs.

BUT. If he wants to get his tongue back, he's gotta- he's gotta eat s'otter food. Hes gotta, he's gotta. And what do s'otters eat?

He has been crying and begging you for urchins, for Meomi knows how long and you can't distract him from the idea he NEEDS TO EAT THE FOOD THAT WILL KILL HIM IN ORDER TO GET HIS TONGUE BACK.

And of course it seems everyone's busy so you're just stuck babysitting until he either falls asleep or the anesthesia wears off.

I seated on aircraft and saw Tracker in the sky see me on the aircraft from his binocular.

Silly and cute Kwazii HCs (and one angst hc - as a treat :D)

During the first days of Kwazii joining the Octonauts, Tweak and Kwazii were in the kitchen and Tweak had placed a cucumber on the counter behind Kwazii and their cat instincts+pirate instincts=mega spook, so they launched himself onto the ceiling and their nails got stuck and he needed help to get down.

You know that cat thing, that if a cat lays on your lap it means they trust you and thus you legally aren't allowed to get up? Yeah it's the same with Kwazii, and he HAS used it for "evil" before, which is to say whenever they see ANY of the crew looking stressed or overworked, he will lay on their lap and start purring, and WILL NOT get up unless they fall asleep, they have done it a lot to Barnacles, Peso, Shellington and Tweak, a few times to Dashi and even a couple of times to Prof. Inkling.

Continuation of the previous one, he and the Vegimals have teamed up before to get everyone in a nest to rest after particularly bad missions.

Kwazii loves To CLIMB and they can and HAVE used Barnacles as a climbing tree and has used it as an excuse to hang out on his shoulders.

He HAS gotten in trouble before for scratching up the couches and chairs on the Octopod and the Gups by Barnacles and Tweak, there WERE wrenches involved, they were traumatized by it.

He sheds, like CRAZY, whenever it happens they use AT LEAST three brushes to get all the extra hair out, one that he uses, one specifically for their tail, and one that Barnacles uses for places that he can't reach.

One time when they were REALLY sick, like delirious sick, and Tunip entered the medical bay to get him some tea he grabbed him and started grooming him, even though he doesn't have any fur, and would not Let GO, the other Vegimals went to find him one at a time and all got caught, at some point the others noticed that the Vegimals were nowhere to be found and when they finally found them they were being held hostage being held by Kwazii and getting groomed, there were squeals involved, Dashi took at least a dozen pictures.

Angst hc: The first time that the crew found out about his arachnophobia was when a spider sneaked onboard the Octopod and layed eggs, Kwazii was the one to find them, when they hatched, and they crawled all over him, they were near catatonic and the others had to get the spiders off him, they remained catatonic for almost a few hours, and when he finally snapped out of it he had a breakdown, they couldn't stop crying and the only reason he stopped was because they passed out from exhaustion in Barnacles' arms.

Hawksbill Sea Turtle spoilers

I did not understand a word of what this episode was about as it was in Chinese (please, English dub, release it at some point). But, this scene's visuals told me everything I needed to know.

Barnacles has been stung by a jellyfish (3rd time in the show), and is concerned about the vinegar being applied to his paw. Kwazii decides to offer emotional support.

That's honestly a really sweet touch in this episode, and I love it.
