frankenstein v the Illiad

On a base level, Clerval is Frankenstein's foil: this is what Victor Frankenstein could have been if he hadn't been consumed by Dark Science and Evil Ambition and Shitty Parenting

It's also an *intense* level of devotion. Like - Achilles and Patroclus level of devotion. It's very "1800ds no homo" level of devotion

And, just like Patroclus did for Achilles' drama and war, Clerval dies by the hand of the Frankenstein's Monster

This puts Elizabeth and Briseis in a similar position - Elizabeth set to marry Frankenstein, killed by Frankenstein's Monster

Briseis set to marry Achilles, taken by Achilles' commanding officer/the war politics...

Which leaves the Monster and the War to be in the same slot: Achilles *loves* the concept of the war and chooses to go to war for endless immortal glory and a short life

Similarly, Frankenstein loves the concept of discovery - and tries to back out his situation. But you can't abandon your child. Achilles tried to abandon the war as well. The timelines/events don't match up perfectly, but when Achilles sits in his tent burrito'd in a blanket, *Patroclus dies for him*

And when Frankenstein is fainting luxuriously into couches, Clerval is eventually killed by the Monster

And what then? Their stories divulge. Achilles goes back out to the war, to face death and the consequences of his actions. And Frankenstein? Frankenstein tries to run home, and then runs to the alps like a whiny loser baby

Because Frankenstein is a COWARD and a WIMP and a BAD PARENT

The moral of this story is

A) don't do bad shit!!!

B) when you do bad shit, FACE THE CONSEQUENCES lest they follow you around, killing your friend and kidnapping your bride, as consequences sometimes do!

Separately... There's a whole thing of the gods just pausing the war at random points, and then restarting the war when they get bored VS the monster pausing at the blind man's house and taking a break, but I'm not sure where it goes or what to do with it

i can't find it rn but i saw a post saying that pylades in the oresteia is like horatio if he was evil, and i've been thinking about that. i think the main difference is that horatio in hamlet is an audience stand-in (getting the exposition at the start, being the recipient of hamlet's inner thoughts as his closest friend, surviving to tell the tale) so he doesn't really partake in the action. he leads hamlet to the ghost, is instructed to watch claudius' reaction during the play, is again instructed to go after a mad ophelia, and watches from the side as hamlet willingly walks into his death at his duel with laertes. on the other hand, pylades actively helps orestes in his plot. he helps him kill clytemnestra and (in euripides' version at least) is incriminated along with orestes. and now that i think about it, orestes actually mudered clytemnestra while hamlet's hesitation to kill claudius makes up most of the plot, so both orestes and pylades are like hamlet and horatio if they Acted More

Gonna start posting about the Romeo and Juliet adaptation I’m working on (a novel that I hope to get published someday, where the basic plot is essentially: “Romeo and Juliet and everything’s the same except Benvolio has some meta-knowledge that this has all happened before—as the events of a famous play that is retold over and over again and is partly ABOUT the tragic nature of cycles that we do not break—and he tries to stop it all too late.” Also it’s very self indulgent because it features bi/ace Romeo, bi Benvolio, gay/aro Mercutio, gay Tybalt—none of their sexualities are specifically labeled in this way, of course, because it’s the 1590s—a scene where Benvolio and Juliet meet and interact, and tragic bencutio)

How cool would it be to have a Frankenstein adaptation that focuses more on the siblings and the family (all 4 of them + Henry and Justine)? An adaptation that draws away from the creature and Victor's work and shows the human tragedies and disintegrating relationships and isolation? One which acknowledges Caroline and Alphonse's roles? One where the deaths are unexplained, almost meaningless, made all the more horrible by the lack of closure and explanation? An adaptation where we experience the events through the eyes of the family Victor left behind?

How cool would that be?

Bronwyn:

Love Pjo and Greek myth based books. She has an entire bookshelf dedicated to them in the Rojas media room

Bonus headcanon: she never really liked divergent much more than a guilty pleasure

Cooper:

Stress bakes. Cannot cook to save his life but is SO good at baking it’s actually really weird.

Bonus headcanon: this ties back to Bronwyns but he too was a massive pjo fan when he was young. Bronwyn eventually got him to continue the series. He cried when Nico got outed

Addy:

Has a huge earring collection. Like, to the point that she has to buy multiple organizers for them. Ik Theres someone on TikTok that did this but she starts doing her makeup SPECIFICALLY to match w the earrings.

Nate:

Is amazing with animals, somehow. All animals are usually calm with him it’s quite crazy. Dogs and cats and birds. They all just follow him around.

Maeve:

Once she cut her hair short, she never gree it out again. She LOVES her short hair.

Phoebe:

Connects back to coopers hc but she learns to bake from him and nonny. It starts helping her focus on things she can control and stuff. Coping mechanisms!!

Knox:

This one ties back to a previous post on this acc but Knox is so androgynous to me. Thats the headcanon. He is so so androgynous.

Ellery:

Her dreams home has shelves upon shelves if mystery books. Or crime related stuff. She loves learning 🧡🧡

Malcolm:

Learned how to play guitar at some point in his life. No one knows how or when he did, but it happened. He refuses to elaborate.

Milly:

Most mysterious of the cousins. No one knows what she likes to do in her free time. She loves being ominous

Aubrey:

LOVES FaceTiming. Anywhere at all times. No one knows why. She might be cooking and thinking “wow i should call Milly” and they’ll FaceTime for HOURS the girl loves seeing people faces.

Jonah:

Plays the Sims. Thats it thats the headcanon.

Ivy:

She has notebooks of random info. She goes on video essay rabbit holes you wouldnt believe. (Bonus headcanon:) Her insomnia has led to rabbit holes of the utmost weirdness. Some days her friends wake up to fun facts about radiation and others to sad cases regarding animals and stuff.

Mateo:

The only sweet he can eat is sour candy. He HATES pastries for some reason. The other two have been trying to get him to try stuff so they can go to cafes and stuff

Cal:

Has those LED light strips in his room. He mostly prefers to have them on purple or orange unless he’s drawing. His room is also the most aesthetically pleasing of the three MCs of this book.

Bonus headcanon: dont know how or why this started but I see the three MCs in this book as SO poly so that’s a real niche headcanon

Kat:

Hasn’t really ever had a hobby so after the entire thing w Gem is figured out she starts trying out every hobby under the sun. She becomes obsessed with escape rooms and drags Liam and Augustus and Jamie to them all the time.

Bonus headcanon: She (like Ivy a few paragraphs ago) is a WELL of knowledge. But in a much less insomniac way and in a more “I need to listen to something at all times wanna hear about this case i hear in a podcast?” Type of way

Liam:

Goes back to lacrosse after everything happens. But also picks up painting? He contains multitudes what can I say

Friends since childhood? Going through traumatic stuff together? Parents who disapprove? Falling into hell/shielding from a bomb??? This is all very similar stuff.

Cooper & Kris: Piper & Shel (it's Shel right?)

Piper was in the perfect relationship with Jason because she felt she had to be, but she broke it off because it wasn't working for her, and she's happy with Shel (it is Shel right???) and Cooper is happy with Kris, even though he was with Keely for a while.

Maeve & Luis: Will & Nico

Maeve's very nonchalant about how she feels, and she constantly takes on too much, ignoring her health. And Luis is just trailing after her like "hey chill relax focus on yourself" and that's very Nico/Will. Also, cooking and healing are two sides of the same coin.

Addy & Keely: Magnus & Alex

They were friends with romantic undertones for the longest time, and Magnus and Alex weren't canon until the ending of the series, and Addy and Keely aren't canon yet, but they have the same vibes

Phoebe & Knox: Leo and Calypso

Leo thought that he wasn't enough for Calypso because she was out of his league, but Cal adores Leo because he's the only one who treats her like an equal and respects her, and it's the same way with Knox and Phoebe.

Ellery & Malcolm: Tyson and Ella

Tyson adores Ella, and Ella's incredibly smart and their entire dynamic is Tyson following Ella around because he adores her and thinks she's smart and that's also very Ellery-and-Malcolm-like.

Jonah & Milly: Ciara & Damien

It's the constant bickering for me. Like, sometimes it hard to tell if they even like each other since they spend all their time arguing, like Jonah and Milly (both couples didn't even like each other to begin with) but they also love each other so much.
