ONE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS

SULTANATE OF AGRABAH

Aladdin only knew the suffering of his fellow kinsmen as he grew up an orphaned child on the streets of Agrabah. He saw how the royal family lived in luxury while their people were suffering, some turned to theft to feed their stomachs when the palace would not provide for them. Aladdin learned from the smartest of these thieves, and became an infamous thief in his own right — and one that eventually caught the eye of the Princess Jasmine, who was in need of help in her quest to take down Jafar, her father’s new adviser and source of the sultanate’s suffering. She found him out in the market place and blackmailed him into helping her search out the greatest weapon in all the land, and the only one she believed capable of defeating Jafar: the Diamond in the Rough, hidden in the Cave of Wonders. Once the pair arrived at the Cave, however, it was revealed that Aladdin himself was the Diamond in the Rough, a Savior prophesied to save their land, and though Aladdin can hardly see himself being a diamond in the rough of his life, Jasmine offered him a token of her belief in the form of a precious royal heirloom, the golden scarab of Agrabah. Bolstered by her belief in him, Aladdin was able to defeat Jafar and oust him from the sultanate — though not before the man was able to taunt him with the reveal that all Saviors are fated to die an early death, and Aladdin would be no exception. 

Aladdin tried not to let this news shake him. Allying himself to the royal family of Agrabah, he becomes the sultanate’s champion, chasing back Jafar and other villains when they would attempt to invade the land. All the while, he ran from his fate and growing feelings towards the princess. Eventually, the burden grew too strong and Aladdin snapped, fleeing to the Enchanted Forest and seeking out the Shears of Destiny, whose sharp edges were the only things capable of cutting one of from their fate. Jafar’s taunts won out, and the Savior of Agrabah used the Shears to cut himself off from his position of Savior and fate of an early death. When the curse washed over the land and brought him to Storybrooke, it was another Savior who would hold the responsibility of the town’s fate on her shoulders.

STORYBROOKE, MAINE

Ali Ababwa, much like his spiritual predecessor, is a thief in Storybrooke; the one difference is that while Aladdin had made a name for himself even before his adventures with the princess, Ali is nothing more than another face in the crowd. He evades all cameras, and those he steals from have difficulty in describing him to the police. It aids him in his petty theft, and the shopkeepers around town are united in how thoroughly stumped they are by this mystery thief. While Ali is successful, however, that does not mean he is happy. He’s constantly dissatisfied with himself every time he steals, and there’s this feeling in his gut that tells him he’s capable of so much more. But every time he tries to become something better than himself it always seems to backfire, so he’s become resigned to his fate.

KNOWN CONNECTIONS

→ fatima sultan : Ali doesn’t usually partake in the company of student teachers, particularly ones as moral as Fatima, but when he happened upon the woman at the town’s farmer’s market he found himself suddenly offering her the apple he’d stolen for himself. Something in the woman reminds Ali that he could be better than he currently is, and actually makes him want to try.

→ emma swan : The first time he came across Emma Swan’s story, it was published in the local newspaper and Ali felt an immediate connection to the town’s new arrival without knowing why. He identifies with the plight of the woman, but also knows that every time she’s mentioned his hand suddenly starts to tremor. Ali’s taken that as a sign to stay far, far away, despite his intrigue.

→ vanessa montgomery : While most in town can’t place the petty thief no matter the circumstances, the private lawyer has taken the work unto herself to build a strong case against Ali. Since catching word of this, he’s put forth the effort to carefully work his casings. He’s entirely dedicated to not going to jail anytime soon.

→ abdul shafiq : Usually, he doesn’t let others take credit for his criminal activities, but Ali does honor Abdul for helping him to get his start. From what Ali can remember, he was first driven to a life of crime out of desperation when Abdul encouraged the town council to push legislation through against the homeless in Storybrooke. Ali has a quiet, seething loathing for the man, but doesn’t see how he could ever defeat the influential city planner.

THE ENCHANTED FOREST

Not all practitioners of magic are created equal. Some are born with magic, some achieve it - and some, like Dr. Facilier, literally sell their soul for it. Facilier once grew up the poor son of an amateur street magician: one who traded in tricks instead of spells. Facilier saw all the ways that his mother’s act could be improved with actual magic, but his mother had heard too many stories on her travels from village to village. She knew that magic always came with a price, and she wasn’t willing to pay it. Facilier was. His believed his mother’s caution to be cowardice, and was determined to gain magic at any cost. Through his mother’s stories, he had already heard tale of an infamous magician — a real one — and so saught out Rumplestiltskin. The dark wizard was intrigued, and granted Facilier a bit of his own powers in exchange for the younger man’s soul, which hadn’t been seeing much use since his quest for power had begun. These powers were linked to an enchanted talisman; so long as Facilier wore it, he would maintain his newfound magical prowess. What Rumplestiltskin didn’t realize, however, was that not even he had the power to broker deals over life and death — and so control over Facilier’s soul went to a much higher deity.

With his talisman around his neck, the self-monikered Dr. Facilier began to make a name for himself in the southern half of the Enchanted Forest. He even became something of a dealmaker in his own right, though he never advised his clients on the price of magic, having never believed in it himself. He even came to broker a deal with a visiting prince from the far-off kingdom of Maldonia. His one mistep was his lack of self-control; Facilier had accomplished his ambitions so quickly and so recklessly that the fortune he earned from his deals waned to dust, and so he became desperate enough to trick Prince Naveen into being transformed into a frog in exchange for a chance at the prince’s fortune. Unfortunately for Dr. Facilier, Naveen had lost all access to his family’s funds after his surprise disinheritance, and Rumplestiltskin had finally discovered the true ownership of Facilier’s soul. The dark wizard had the froggy prince and his ladylove steal Facilier’s talisman, cutting him off from the magic the Dark One had granted him and leaving him nothing more than a magician’s son again. When another of Rumplestiltskin’s proteges cast the Dark Curse, Facilier was still searching for a way to get his revenge on Rumplestiltskin and steal his magic back.

STORYBROOKE, MAINE

There aren’t a whole lot of souls reckless enough to stand up against Mr. Gold, but Francis Duperré is proud to call himself one of the exceptions. The owner of the only public law firm in town, Francis stands against the independent lawyer and pawnbroker, and makes a habit of taking the opposing side to Mr. Gold’s cases, no matter how dastardly the client. He has no qualms about resorting to the dirtiest methods available to win his cases, and often relies on his clever trickery and charisma to swoon the jury over to his side.

What may be Francis’ one saving grace is his endless devotion and loyalty to his employees. He’s a generous boss, granting whatever raises and holidays they need. His rule of thumb is that so long as the lawyers and interns he has hired remain stalwart to his side and the firm, he will return the favor.

→ anthony leon : Francis cannot get enough of Anthony Leon, entertained by how easily the man becomes frightened. Practical jokes one of his specialties, and Francis had made Anthony a frequent target. The two are good companions, but Francis remains relentless. 

→ lord hades : This connection will become available during season five.

→ isaiah smith : Isaiah Smith may be a pretty face, but as far as Francis is concerned that’s all he is. There aren’t a lot of brains floating around in that cop head of his, and certainly no personality due to how unappreciative the officer is of Francis’ theatrics.

→ abdul shafiq : Francis and Abdul have a certain arrangement: whenever the city planner has a scheme set in place for the town’s land, Francis will take any measures necessary to secure the legality of that plan — even if it does involve putting a meticulous eye over Mr. Gold’s contracts to find any loopholes needed to oust any particularly opposed land occupants. The two find a common delight in frustrating the landowner.

SLEEPING BEAUTY

THE ENCHANTED FOREST

Prince Phillip’s fate was decided the moment he was born the heir to a king and queen. One day, he would wed a foreign princess for a fortuitous alliance and become king, but until then he was to train for his position and act as his title demanded. For Phillip, this was no challenge, as “princely” was practically engraved in his character. His life was easy, and his future a rosy shade of security that was all too achievable. And then he met Princess Aurora, the woman he was to marry to secure his crown, and his image of an easy future washed out with the rubbish.

Through it was a happy coincidence to find himself so quickly falling in love with his bride-to-be, Aurora carried with her her family’s curse. An enchantress by the name of Maleficent cast a spell on the princess to trap her under a never-ending sleep, and prevented Phillip from doing the “princely” rescue he had been trained for by transforming him into a fearsome beast called the Yaoguai. Phillip roamed the kingdoms of the Enchanted Forest for long while, looking for a cure for his monstrous form. It proved difficult to find anyone who could see the prince trapped in the beast. Finally, two travelers by the names of Belle and Mulan discovered and released his curse, and Phillip hired Mulan to help him seek out Aurora. Years passed before they found where the sleeping princess had been hidden away, and just when Phillip had managed to press his lips to Aurora’s in a kiss born of True Love, the Evil Queen’s curse swept over the horizon and over the three, whisking them away.

STORYBROOKE, MAINE

Stephen Porter is poised to earn himself a fortune...in cutted meats and delicatessen items, that is. His parents own a successful farm on the outskirts of Storybrooke and have more than earned their effort back in return as they supply goods to the town stores. But while Stephen could have sat back and coasted on his family’s efforts, his parents were determined for him to learn the family trade and earn his privilege. Through family connections, they were able to secure him a position at Chop Shop, a local butchery, and Stephen has been working there as a butcher ever since. To his surprise, he’s found that he actual likes the work and doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty. The isolation he’s lybeen saddled with since taking the position, though, has left him a little cut off from the rest of Storybrooke society, leaving him a little naive and out-dated.

KNOWN CONNECTIONS

→ rose alderic :  Stephen and Rose met under unlikely circumstances, during which he almost swung a butcher’s knife at her face and she successfully tossed her shoe into his. The two seem to consistently start conversations on the wrong foot to the point where they have actively begun to stay out of each other’s way.

→ krystal chen : Krystal might be one of the few people Stephen gets to see outside of his job, and that’s only due to his stopping by for a nightcap at the Rabbit Hole after work. Despite this, he’s come to rely on her to catch him up on the latest news and for advice on Rose, her friend and his... violent acquaintance.

→ danica boyd : Stephen and Danica have been in the kind of on-again, off-again relationship that seems as if it’s been around forever. There are times when Stephen really does believe he could love Danica, if he put his mind to it, but then she’ll do something so acerbic that he needs to take a step back.

→ sean herman : Sean never fails to stop by the butchery on his lunch break, and Stephen knows the man’s sandwich order by heart. The two have a distant kind of friendship that’s mostly bonded by the constant patterns of their life, but Stephen won’t complain about a generous customer.

THE SNOW QUEEN

full name : Sarah Fisher/Ingrid, the Snow Queen

ARENDELLE

Ingrid was the eldest of three and she loved her sisters greatly. She adored her parents as well as her kingdom. It was a blissful life, full of fun and excitement. However, her happily ever after did not last long. One time a peddler attempted to kidnap Ingrid’s sister, Gerda. Terrified of losing her sister, Ingrid pushed the man. As she did, her powers ignited and froze him. Gerda and Helga (the other sister) decide to protect their sister. 

As she aged, her powers continued to grow more and more out of control. Gerda and Helga decide they must find help for their sister, especially after hearing that there’s someone who could help her. Gerda and Helga convinced Ingrid to travel to Mist Haven. They land in Mist Haven and find Rumplestiltskin, who in exchange for special ribbons gave them concealing gloves and an urn to trap Ingrid if she became dangerous.

Thankful, they head back to Arendelle. Life seemed to get easier until one fateful day when Ingrid and Helga’s suitor were talking. The suitor flirted with Ingrid. Panicking, Ingrid’s powers erupt, as not even the gloves could stop the magic. The magic also strikes Helga. Both the suitor and Helga are frozen. Gerda comes upon the horrific scene and banished Ingrid from Arendelle and into the Land Without Magic. 

STORYBROOKE, MAINE

When the curse swept through Mist Haven, Ingrid was already in the Land Without Magic due to Gerda’s banishment. In the time that had passed between her arrival and the curse’s casting, she had come upon an age-old prophecy that told Ingrid she would have absolute control over her powers so long as she looked for two new sisters to replace the balance Gerda and Helga had brought to her life. There was one name that this prophecy provided to Ingrid: Emma Swan. Miraculously, Emma soon became one of her foster children. She planned to adopt Emma, but, on the day it was to be finalized, Emma ran away after Ingrid attempted to get her to use magic. 

In trouble with the authorities, she fled. She found herself in Storybrooke, Maine. It seemed like the perfect place to live while awaiting Emma’s arrival. The prophecy could wait. While she waited, Ingrid took on a new identity - Sarah Fisher - and opened an ice cream shop named Any Given Sundae.

THE LITTLE MERMAID

THE ENCHANTED FOREST

The only heir to a maritime kingdom, Prince Eric grew into his adulthood knowing what was expected of him. He would study where his governess and parents directed him to, he would marry a princess from an allied nation, or a nation that needed to be allied, and he would ascend the throne when his father passed it down. For the most part, he did alright. Both of his parents passed in a boating accident when he was young, so there was some delay in his ascent to the throne as his parents’ advisers selected the regents to rule in his place. Free to concentrate on learning to become a great ruler, instead of being thrown into it at a young age, Eric vehemently studied the ways of his kingdom. Intent on understanding his people. He learned the fishing trade and how to be an accomplished mariner, often electing to study “abroad” on one of his father’s boats. 

It was on one of these “study abroads” that Eric’s ship suddenly found itself taken under the ocean by a violent storm. Knocked unconscious by a falling beam, the prince would have surely drowned had it not been for an adventuring mermaid swimming past. The mermaid dragged him ashore, and as Eric awoke he could have sworn he’d caught a glimpse of a grin as bright as its owner’s red hair before his rescuer suddenly disappeared. He searched for whoever had rescued him, but didn’t find her again until she suddenly reappeared at a tribute to the sea goddess, Ursula; he would have known that red hair anywhere, and believed that the goddess must have sent Ariel to him that day because she was certainly his blessing. In a moment of uncharacteristic impulse, Eric invited Ariel to travel with him on the trading expedition to Agrabah that was set to depart the next morning. From her response, Eric wholeheartedly assumed he would see her - but dawn came and Ariel didn’t, so he set off with his crew. He never could drive her from his mind, and when he was swept up into the curse during the middle of a negotiation with the Princess Jasmine, his last thought was still of a grin beneath bright red hair.

STORYBROOKE, MAINE

In one way, Prince Eric actually got his wish when he was transported to Storybrooke along with the other victims of the curse. He became little more than one of the maritime town’s several fishermen, but while he lost the pressures of his royal title he also lost the people who made the burden worth it. Eric Fisher is an isolated man, one who’s never found it easy to just start up a conversation with another person, and his penchant for daydreaming often leaves those who he does actually talk to stumped when his eyes glaze over as he looks to the sea. More than one person has commented that he would do better if he just left town and lived out on the open ocean, and the idea would tempt Eric more if he could just muster up the money to buy his own boat.

KNOWN CONNECTIONS

→ damien whale : Eric wishes he’d never had one unfortunate accident out on his boat, because ever since he confessed his astounding lack of a love life while he was hopped up on painkillers in Dr. Whale’s waiting room, Damien’s been on a one-man-mission to be Eric’s professional wingman. This is something that has been to the fisherman’s intense embarrassment.

→ fatima sultan : In Agrabah, Prince Eric and Princess Jasmine had been in close quarters as they negotiated trade agreements; in Storybrooke, the two still haggle - but as market companions, as Eric tries to sell his fish at Storybrooke’s farmer’s market and Fatima runs circles around the man to price his catch down. 

→ ariel fisher : This connection will become available during season three.

→ rebekah boyd : The cashier at the Dark Star Pharmacy caught his attention by the bright hue of her red hair, and Eric hasn’t been able to stop himself from dropping by the store ever since. He’s become something of a regular at the pharmacy, and he and Rebekah will often catch themselves up in long, friendly talks.

October has passed, and along with it went Halloween! The in-game date has been changed to November, and Heritage Park’s event has now been fully packed up. Maybe since the tricks and treats of the festival have passed, a few certain townsfolk may resume their usual mischief, plotting all kinds of dastardly deeds, and one Savior might find her work cut out for her (if she would only believe!). Members are encouraged to tie up the last of their event threads as we begin our regular play, and if you’re not already a citizen of Storybrooke, check out our application! Now would be a perfect time to jump into play, as everyone gets settled into their roles here at Cursed.
