im rereading bleach and i really love the title for ch279 cause it shows how kubo really researches into the terminology he uses. jugulator isnt even a word that the vast majority of native english speakers know, but he dug it up from old law definitions probs and used it accurately for the chapter title a++ i love little things like this that give the series its vibe

for those wondering, jugulator is a VERY old law term for a cutthroat/vicious murderer. it hasn’t actually been used for a long while now though.

Out for a Stroll

“Ah! The sakura have finally bloomed.”

He tried to ignore the voice at first, but apparently it belong to a girl who couldn’t read the atmosphere. Suddenly, the voice drew nearer and he felt a hand on his shoulder.

‘What the...?’ he thought, as she suddenly turned him around and - of all things - hugged him. He was shocked to say the least, and very much disgruntled by this ridiculously over-friendly girl. It was only when she pulled back and he saw her face that he truly received the shock of his life.

“Y...You....” he said shakily, eyes going wide and heart thudding so hard in his chest it could bruise his ribs if he wasn’t careful. He knew she was saying something but the words were muffled, as if he were underwater. In an unsteady movement, he slowly reached out with both of his hands. He cupped her face between them, applying a bit of pressure as if to make sure she was really there. It was only when he felt something solid beneath his fingertips that he dared to even breathe.

Suddenly, a wave of emotion crashed down upon him, washing away the dark numbness that had claimed him. He pulled her into a hug, already beginning to shake.

“You’re alive...? You’re alive. All this time I...I thought....!” he choked, not able to say any more. Not able to voice he fear that had been his reality for so long.

Maiko hadn’t expected to be seeing so many familiar faces go their separate ways. In fact, now she was standing in a sea of people, being one of the new recruits for Division 5, and yet she didn’t really recognize a single student. So when she spotted a friendly face, one she could pick out of a crowd anywhere, anytime, she made a beeline for him.

“Mamoru! Mamooooruuuu!” The bubbly blonde had no idea the pain she was about to cause, nor the healing she would begin. She bounced over to her older, somewhat adoptive brother and her only family, and put a hand on his shoulder from behind. “Mamoru!” She turned him and wrapped her arms around him for a brief moment before pulling back to look at him. How long has it been, since they’d parted ways, since he’d left her with her family?

A look of confusion crossed her face. Why wasn’t he smiling? “Is something wrong? Is there something on my face?” She pouted, pawing at her cheeks to make sure her lunch hadn’t gotten stuck there.

Mamoru sighed, feeling as if the dwindling energy in his body escaped along with his breath. He strolled through the barracks of the 5th Division, keeping away from the crowds that had gathered today.

Today was important. Doubly so. It was the day that new academy graduates joined their respective squads. New faces were everywhere, and there were official greetings and welcomes and how-do-you-do’s to dole out. But he just couldn’t bring himself to do it. There was another reason today was important.

It was the anniversary of the day he’d learned that his home district in Rukongai had been wiped out. Along with his family. With his sister.

It was an old scar on his heart, and others in the 5th Division were well aware he shouldn’t be bothered during this time. And yet, he heard someone calling for him. Who was it?
